Chapter 5 - The Cold Audit
Michael turned his head slowly toward Vanessa, his eyes wide with absolute shock. "Vanessa... what is she talking about?"
Vanessa’s sweet, elegant mask shattered completely. She didn't look at Michael; she glared at me across the table with pure, unadulterated venom.
"You had no right to pry into our private financial business, you bitter old woman!" Vanessa spat, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the floorboards.
"Your private business involved my home, Vanessa!" I stood up to meet her gaze, my posture straight, my hands unshakeable.
"You pushed me onto the floor of this room because you thought I was a helpless old widow who would stay quiet to keep the peace."
"You thought if you made me feel small, I would hand over the keys and move into a condo quietly."
Michael stood up next, his hands trembling as he grabbed the papers from the folder, reading through the bankruptcy notices and his own forged signature on the secondary loan guarantees.
"Vanessa..." Michael stammered, his voice cracking into a desperate whisper. "You told me those papers were for a routine pre-approval... You told me your family was funding the down payment!"
"Your family doesn't have a down payment, Michael!" Victoria snapped from across the table, her polite country-club persona vanishing instantly. "We are facing a corporate receivership! If your mother doesn't transfer the title to this estate by Friday, your credit is ruined along with ours!"
"You used me," Michael whispered, stepping away from Vanessa as if her touch carried fire. "You used my mother’s home."
"I used what you offered, Michael!" Vanessa yelled, rounding on him with complete contempt. "You were the one bragged about your mother’s million-dollar house! You practically handed it to us on a silver platter!"

I looked at my son. He stood in the center of his father’s dining room, pale, broken, and finally seeing the woman he loved for exactly who she was.
