Chapter 3 - The Cracks in the Suburbia Mirage

"What?!" Jenna’s voice shrieked so loudly it startled a flock of birds off the neighbor's roof. "This is insane! You can't do this! This is our house!"
"Actually, Mrs. Vance, it isn't," Harold replied smoothly, pulling a laminated deed from his briefcase. "Helen Vance owns one hundred percent of the title, the deed, and the land underneath your feet. Your occupancy was contingent on specific behavioral and financial covenants."
"You signed those covenants, Michael," Harold added, looking directly at my son. "In my office. On May 12th."
Michael looked down at the papers in his hands. His name sat right above Jenna's on the signature line. Beneath it, in clear bold text, was Clause 14B: Occupancy may be revoked immediately if the owner is subjected to documented mistreatment, financial misrepresentation, or deliberate exclusion.
"Harold, please," Michael begged, his face turning ghost-white. "It’s Thanksgiving Eve! My mother wouldn't do this! Can I just talk to her?"
"Your mother tried to talk to you for six months, Michael," Harold said quietly. "You ignored her until you needed her bank account. Now she’s enforcing her legal rights."
Jenna’s mother, Pam, rushed into the foyer, holding a silver champagne bucket. "What is the meaning of this harassment? Do you know who my husband is? We are hosting twenty people tomorrow!"
"You will be hosting them somewhere else, ma'am," the lead deputy stated firmly. "If this property is not completely vacated by 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, my office will execute a physical lockout and impound all personal belongings left behind."
Just then, a sleek black golf cart pulled into the driveway.
Greg Miller, the president of the Sycamore Heights Homeowners Association, stepped off the vehicle, wearing a branded HOA polo shirt and holding a clip board. He had seen the police cruiser from across the street.
"What’s going on here, officers?" Greg demanded, puffing out his chest with local authority. "I’m the HOA president. Surrounding residents are complaining about the emergency vehicles blocking the cul-de-sac."
Jenna ran down the porch steps toward him, tears ruining her expensive mascara. "Greg! Help us! Michael's crazy mother is trying to steal our house!"
Greg looked at Harold, stepping into his personal space. "Listen here, counsel. Sycamore Heights is a private gated community. Non-resident owners cannot initiate legal enforcement without board approval. I personally signed off on Michael and Jenna's residency!"

Harold slowly pulled a secondary document from his folder and handed it to the HOA president.
"Then you just made a very expensive mistake, Mr. Miller," Harold said with a razor-thin smile.
