Chapter 4 - THE SOVEREIGN RISE

The thunderstorm that raged over Manhattan on Thursday night was the most violent of the season, turning the city skyline into a dramatic, flashing theater of white lightning and roaring thunder.
Inside the penthouse, the air was thick with the scent of ozone and burning oak.
Julian sat in his wheelchair near the stone fireplace, dressed in a sharp, dark charcoal gray business suit—the very suit Victoria had delivered to him this afternoon for his "final public appearance" at the morning's shareholder gala.
Clara stood beside him, her white clinical uniform looking bright and clean under the warm glow of the chandeliers.
She was carefully packing her medical bags, preparing her things as if she were getting ready to leave the estate permanently after the morning's transfer was finalized.
"The federal marshals have just confirmed the perimeter security at the Plaza Hotel, Clara," my brother, Captain Marcus Bennett of the Federal Treasury's Forensic Division, said over the secure, encrypted earphone hidden inside Clara’s ear.
"We have successfully traced the chemical shipments of the neuromuscular blocker back to a dummy pharmaceutical firm in Panama owned exclusively by Victoria’s holding company," Marcus reported, his voice steady and unyielding.
"The local precinct captain who was helping them cover up the 'accident' has just been detained by internal affairs."
"The moment Julian walks into that ballroom, we will have the legal authority to execute the federal arrest warrants."
"Is the database secure, Marcus?" Clara asked, her voice quiet as she adjusted the strap of her medical case.
"The forensic ledger is fully loaded, Clara," Marcus confirmed.
"We have the original, uncorrupted transaction files showing Victoria siphoned twenty million dollars from the employee pension fund to cover her bankrupt real estate investments."
"They think they are escaping the federal audit by merging the companies, but they are actually walking straight into a steel trap."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the master suite were pushed open with a sharp, echoing clack.
Damian walked into the room, followed by two high-society corporate lawyers in tailored black suits, carrying leather briefcases filled with the final probate guardianship transfer deeds.
Damian’s handsome face carried a smug, victorious grin, his fingers casually playing with his gold pen.
"It’s time for the final rehearsal, big brother," Damian said, his voice dripping with a casual, cruel satisfaction as he walked toward Julian's chair.
He stopped in front of the wheelchair, looking down at Julian's motionless legs with a cold, dismissive contempt.
"Mother wants to ensure there are no delays with the biometric scanner tomorrow morning."
"The investors are flying in from Zurich, and we cannot have you having another one of your 'emotional episodes' in front of the media."
"I am ready, Damian," Julian said, his voice low, hollow, and entirely devoid of any strength.
"I just want this to be over."
"I want to rest."
"Oh, you’ll rest, Julian," Damian laughed, a cold, arrogant sound that made Clara's knuckles turn white as she clutched her medical bag.
"The private clinic in Geneva has a beautiful view of the lake."
"You won't have to worry about a single thing anymore."
He leaned forward, mockingly patting Julian’s knee, entirely unaware of the sudden, powerful tension in the muscles beneath his hand.
"The lawyers have already pre-authorized the digital keys," Damian added, sliding the leather folder onto Julian's lap.
"We just need your physical thumbprint on the scanner to finalize the integration."
"Dr. Sterling has already signed the certificate of permanent medical incapacitation."
"Is Dr. Sterling coming to the gala, Damian?" Clara asked, her voice quiet, submissive, and entirely professional.
"Of course," Damian sneered, not even turning his head to look at her.
"He needs to be there to verify Julian’s 'unstable physical condition' to the board’s medical committee."
"Once the vote is passed, our family will have the exclusive monopoly on the entire Eastern Seaboard shipping lines."
"And what about Clara?" Julian asked, his voice shaking slightly, as if he were carrying a deep, pathetic fear of being left alone.
"She is the only therapist who understands my pain management."
"Dr. Bennett’s contract ends the moment the merger is signed, Julian," Damian said, his voice flat and dismissive.
"We are flying in a team of world-class Swiss specialists to manage your... recovery."
"You won't need her anymore."
Clara stood in the shadow of the fireplace, her face a calm, unyielding mask of professional detachment, but her eyes locked onto Julian's with a sudden, intense understanding.
They had spent the last three nights running grueling, agonizing resistance exercises in the dead of night.
Under Clara’s careful medical guidance, Julian’s muscular frame had responded to the antidote with a miraculous, explosive recovery.
The nerve pathways were fully open, the muscle memory of an elite athlete returning to his limbs with a quiet, terrifying speed.
Julian was not paralyzed.
He was a coiled spring, a silent, powerful predator waiting for the exact second to strike.
"Then I will sign the papers at the gala, Damian," Julian whispered, his head bowing as if he were surrendering the final remnants of his spirit to the shadows.
"Good," Damian said, his grin widening as he snapped his leather folder shut.
"Get some rest, Julian."
"Tomorrow is going to be a historic day for our family."
As the door closed behind them, Julian slowly raised his head, his dark eyes locking onto Clara's with a burning, predatory focus that made her heart skip a beat.
May you like
"Tomorrow morning, Clara," Julian whispered, his hands slowly lifting from the armrests of his wheelchair, his fingers clenching into tight, powerful fists.
"We show them what happens when you try to steal from my father's house."
