Chapter 2 - THE SOUND OF SILENCE

The tiny plastic cup in Lily's small hand seemed to catch the pale, dusty gray light filtering down from the heavy basement door.

I sat on the cold concrete step, my expensive business suit entirely ignored as I focused every ounce of my attention on the quiet, fragile child staring up at me.

The beautiful Mandarin song she had been singing had evaporated into the quiet air, leaving only the low, metallic hum of the mansion's boiler system running in the background.

"Lily," I repeated, my voice dropping into a soft, steady frequency that I had never used in any of my corporate negotiations.

"I want to help you."

"Can you tell me who put you down here?"

The little girl didn't speak; she simply clutched her plastic cup tighter to her chest, her large dark eyes studying my face with a deep, silent intelligence that made my chest ache.

Above us, the rapid, frantic clicking of my assistant’s high heels echoed down the marble hallway of the Whitmore mansion.

"Mr. Cole!" she whispered loudly, her head peeking through the open doorway, her face pale with a sudden, overwhelming panic.

"Gerald Whitmore has just entered the grand foyer."

"He was notified by the security team that you didn't leave the premises after the board meeting."

"He is coming this way right now."

I stood up slowly from the step, my eyes never leaving Lily's small, still frame as I reached into my jacket pocket to secure my personal recording device.

"Elena," I said, addressing my assistant with a calm, unyielding authority that made her stop in her tracks.

"Block the top of the stairs."

"Do not let any of Whitmore's private security guards close this door."

"I am going to find out exactly why Chicago's richest family is keeping a three-year-old child hidden beneath their marble floors."

Before Elena could answer, the heavy footsteps of Gerald Whitmore, the patriarch of the multi-million-dollar Whitmore Shipping Group, echoed in the hallway.

He was a tall, imposing man in a tailored dark suit, his silver hair coiffed into a flawless, rigid wave that matched the cold ambition in his eyes.

"Ethan!" Gerald’s booming, theatrical voice carried an artificial warmth that turned my stomach to liquid ice as he approached the door.

"What is the meaning of this delay?"

"Your driver has been waiting on the private driveway for twenty minutes."

"We have the final restructuring deeds ready for your biometric signature in the study."

"The signature can wait, Gerald," I said, stepping up the concrete stairs until I stood directly on the threshold, blocking his path with my own athletic frame.

"First, we need to discuss the child sitting on the basement floor of your thirty-million-dollar estate."

Gerald’s smile instantly froze, his face turning an ash-pale gray under the bright lights of the hallway chandeliers.

The silence that settled over the corridor was so absolute, so heavy, that I could hear the rapid, frantic beating of his assistant's heart behind him.
