Chapter 4 - THE SOVEREIGN DAWN

I scrambled backward into the kitchen, my hands shaking as I pulled the burner phone from my pocket and pressed the speed-dial button for Marcus.

The line rang once, twice, each second feeling like a lifetime as the wood of the front door began to splinter under the relentless blows of Julian's thugs.

"Clara! I'm five minutes away!" Marcus's voice boomed through the speaker, tight with a sudden, frantic panic as he heard the crashing sounds in the background.

"Keep the door locked! Do not let them touch the blue folder!"

"They're breaking the frame, Marcus!" I screamed, my voice cracking as a massive boot finally crashed through the center panel of the door.

Julian stepped through the shattered wood, his dark blue suit immaculate, his face contorted into a monstrous, angry snarl as his eyes locked onto the blue folder under my arm.

"Take the folder, Damian," Julian commanded, gesturing to his younger brother who stepped into the ruined entryway behind him, carrying a heavy steel briefcase.

"And find the child. We need her physical biometric signature to complete the transfer before the board meeting at ten."

I backed against the kitchen counter, my hand reaching for the heavy iron skillet on the stove, my body forming an unbreakable wall of defense between them and the hallway where Lily was hidden.

"If you touch my daughter, Julian," I said, my voice dropping into an ice-cold, lethal frequency, "I will ensure the federal prosecutor receives the encryption keys to your Panama accounts before the sun sets."

"You don't have the connection, Clara," Damian sneered, stepping forward to grab my arm, his fingers digging painfully into my skin as he tried to wrench the blue folder from my grip.

Suddenly, the high-pitched, frantic sirens of state police vehicles echoed through the open windows of the street below, their red and blue lights painting the kitchen walls.

Marcus and his tactical team flooded the apartment through the fire escape, their weapons drawn, their dark utility vests displaying the gold seals of the Treasury Division.

"Federal agents! Get your hands where we can see them!" Marcus roared, his voice carrying the absolute, military authority of a federal raid.

Damian froze, his grip on my arm loosening instantly as two heavily built marshals tackled him to the floor, the cold steel handcuffs snapping shut around his wrists.

Julian backed away toward the ruined doorway, his face turning an instant, pasty white as he realized his perfect, high-society trap had just been permanently dismantled.

"This is an absolute mistake, Captain," Julian stammered, his smooth baritone voice completely evaporating into a desperate, high-pitched plea.

"My wife is mentally unstable... she's having another one of her emotional episodes..."

"Save it for the judge, Julian," Marcus said, his eyes reflecting a lethal, protective rage as he guided my husband's hands behind his back.

The golden prince of the Winchester family was reduced to a cowering felon, his empire of lies shattered in front of the very wife he had tried to destroy.
