Chapter 6 - The Truth in the Courtroom

The defense didn't waste time with opening statements or character references.

Emily's lead attorney simply pressed play on the nursery security monitor feed, projecting the video onto the large screens hanging on both sides of the courtroom.

The silence in the room was absolute as the audio of Noah's desperate cries filled the space, paired with the visual of Michael checking his brand-new thirtieth birthday watch while his wife lay bleeding at his feet.

The judge, a veteran family court magistrate named Sarah Sterling, didn't look at the screen for long.

She looked at Michael.

Her expression was a mix of profound disgust and absolute finality that made the corporate defense attorneys sit back in their chairs without uttering a single objection.

“Mr. Preston,” Judge Sterling said, her voice cutting through the quiet room like an iron blade.

“In my twenty-two years on this bench, I have rarely witnessed such a callous disregard for human life, let alone the life of your own flesh and blood.”

“The medical reports from Mercy General indicate that your wife suffered an acute postpartum hemorrhage that would have been fatal within an additional forty-five minutes of neglect.”

“You didn't just leave for a vacation; you left a dying mother beside a ten-day-old infant to protect your personal amusement.”

Michael’s attorney stood up, his voice weak as he tried to mitigate the damage. “Your Honor, my client was unaware of the severity of the medical situation...”

“Sit down, counsel,” the judge commanded, before writing her final signature across the primary custody registry.

The court granted Emily exclusive, permanent physical and legal custody of Noah with zero visitation rights allocated to Michael.

The asset division was handled under a separate criminal fraud statute, stripping Michael of his claim to the Bellevue home and enforcing a massive financial judgment that would drain his personal savings to absolute zero.

He stood at the defense table, his hands shaking as the bailiff stepped forward to escort him from the room to face the county prosecutors waiting in the hallway.

The empire of control he had spent a lifetime building had vanished in the span of a ninety-minute hearing.
