Chapter 7 - EVELYN’S CONFESSION

Evelyn requested a meeting from county detention.
She had heard about Crane’s escape before investigators announced it publicly.
That alone made Rebecca Cho suspicious.
Evelyn agreed to speak only if Lorenzo attended.
He joined through a secure video link from the Lake Forest house.
I remained beside him.
Evelyn looked exhausted without her carefully styled hair and expensive clothes.
“Crane took the Ellis women to the old Mercer clinic,” she said.
“We know,” Lorenzo replied.
“You don’t know the lower floor exists.”
“What is down there?”
“My mother funded a private pharmaceutical laboratory beneath the building. It closed fifteen years ago, but Victor kept using it.”
“For what?”
“Experimental compounds.”
“The stimulant he gave Teresa?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn looked at me.
“He told us the compound would create controllable episodes that resembled natural cardiac or autoimmune events.”
“You knew what it did,” I said.
“Not when Teresa took it.”
“But when Nico did?”
Her eyes filled.
“After the fourth night.”
My stomach turned.
“You watched seven more attacks.”
“Crane said stopping suddenly would expose us. He promised the doses were below lethal range.”
“He was eight months old.”
“I know.”
“No. You know now that you were caught.”
Evelyn did not defend herself.
“I wanted guardianship. I wanted Teresa’s shares. I told myself Nico would remain alive and protected while Lorenzo lost control.”
Lorenzo’s face became empty.
“You wanted my child but not his father.”
“I thought you would raise him inside violence.”
“So you poisoned him inside his nursery.”
“Yes.”
The confession seemed to take something from her when she said it plainly.
Evelyn explained that Salvatore approached her before Teresa’s delivery. He claimed Lorenzo planned to remove the Mercer family from all decisions involving Nico.
Salvatore promised Evelyn joint control if she helped establish a medical record portraying Lorenzo as unstable and Nico as chronically ill.
“Did you know Salvatore planned Teresa’s death?” Lorenzo asked.
“No.”
“Did you learn afterward?”
Evelyn looked away.
“When?”
“After the funeral.”
“And you remained with them.”
“Salvatore showed me the altered trust. He said if I spoke, I would be charged as part of the murder.”
“You were part of the cover-up.”
“Yes.”
“Why are you helping now?”
“Because Victor is going to kill Maya’s mother.”
She revealed that Crane kept no hostages longer than necessary. The clinic’s lower floor included an incinerator once used for pharmaceutical waste.
If Salvatore obtained the blue ledgers, he would destroy the witnesses and blame Crane.
“If he doesn’t obtain them?” I asked.
“He’ll kill them sooner.”
Evelyn offered an access code and a ventilation map.
“What do you want in return?” Cho asked.
“To testify.”
“That is not a benefit.”
“I want Nico to know one day that I told the truth.”
Lorenzo’s voice remained cold.
“He will know you helped poison him.”
“I know.”
“He may never forgive you.”
“I know.”
“Then tell the truth without asking a child to clean it for you.”
Evelyn nodded.
The plan to enter the Mercer clinic depended on the lower ventilation tunnel.
Luca’s team would approach through an abandoned pharmacy loading bay while state police staged the ledger exchange at the front.
Salvatore had demanded Lorenzo come alone.
He would appear to comply.
I insisted on joining the medical rescue team.
Lorenzo refused.
Then he stopped himself.
“I am afraid Crane will use you against your mother.”
“He already is.”
“You are not trained for armed entry.”
“No. I’m trained to keep the hostages alive once officers reach them.”
Cho supported me.
Lorenzo reluctantly agreed on the condition that I remain behind Luca until the floor was secure.
At 11:34 the following night, Lorenzo drove to the clinic carrying a metal case.
The original blue ledgers remained in federal custody.
The case contained accurate reproductions embedded with tracking devices.
Salvatore waited inside the abandoned lobby.
Crane stood beside him.
“My mother,” I whispered through the command audio.
The response came through Lorenzo’s hidden microphone.
“You see them after I see the books,” Salvatore said.
Lorenzo opened the case.
Crane examined one page.
“These are copies.”
Salvatore raised a gun.
“They are the only version you will receive.”
“You believe the police can protect your son forever?”
“No.”
Lorenzo’s voice remained calm.
“I believe ending the empire that gave you access will protect him better.”
Salvatore stared at him.
“You would destroy your own family.”
“I would stop confusing its crimes with its blood.”
In the lower tunnel, Luca’s team reached the medical floor.
I followed after they cleared the first corridor.
My mother and aunt were strapped to reclining chairs. IV lines entered their arms.
Dr. Patel’s rescue physician checked the bags.
“Sedative infusion.”
My mother opened her eyes.
“Maya?”
“I’m here.”
“I told you that job sounded complicated.”
Even then, she was complaining.
I cut her restraints.
An alarm sounded.
Crane had triggered the lower-floor lockdown.
Steel shutters sealed the exits.
Smoke entered through the vents.
“Incinerator system,” Evelyn had warned.
Heat climbed rapidly.
Luca searched for the manual override.
The code Evelyn gave us failed.
“She lied,” one officer said.
“No,” I replied. “Crane changed it.”
My mother gripped my hand.
Behind the wall, machinery roared.
Then my phone rang through the emergency network.
Evelyn was calling from detention.
“Use Teresa’s birthday,” she said. “Crane uses it for every override because he thinks grief makes people predictable.”
I entered the numbers.
The shutters opened.
We moved the hostages into the tunnel as fire spread through the laboratory.
Upstairs, Salvatore heard the alarm and fired at Lorenzo.
The bullet grazed his ribs.
Lorenzo tackled him.
Crane escaped through the rear stairwell carrying a refrigerated medical case.
Police captured Salvatore.
Crane reached an ambulance and disappeared before the perimeter closed.
Inside the case he took was the complete toxicology profile for Nico.
Without it, Dr. Patel warned, they might not know whether the infant carried a delayed-release implant or another source of exposure.
Then Crane sent a message.
THE BOTTLE WAS ONLY THE FIRST DELIVERY SYSTEM. CHECK THE CHILD’S SURGICAL SCAR.

Nico had undergone a minor procedure shortly after birth.
Crane had performed it.
