Plot twist

Chapter 4 - THE ACCOUNT HE NEVER KNEW ABOUT

By Monday morning, Hale Meridian's offices were unusually quiet.

Employees whispered in corridors.

Executives canceled meetings.

Two directors arrived before seven and left through a side entrance less than an hour later.

Evan sat behind his desk staring at numbers that refused to make sense.

Forty-two million dollars.

Twenty-eight million against the penthouse.

Another fourteen million in short-term obligations.

And now the bank wanted explanations.

His CFO stood across from him.

“You need to speak with Claire.”

Evan looked up.

“She won't help.”

“Then you need another source of capital.”

“I'm working on it.”

The CFO hesitated.

“There may not be time.”

Evan stood.

“Leave.”

After the door closed, Evan opened a drawer.

Inside was a velvet box.

He removed a necklace.

Claire's necklace.

A simple pearl pendant her mother had given her before their wedding.

She had stopped wearing it years ago.

Evan had kept it because he remembered her saying it was the one thing she would never sell.

He had never understood why he remembered that sentence.

Now he did.

He needed money.

And the necklace was worth almost nothing compared with what he needed.

Yet it represented something else.

Proof of how far he had fallen.

He put it back.

His phone rang.

Sienna.

He almost ignored it.

Then answered.

“What?”

“I found something.”

His eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“The bracelet.”

“What about it?”

“The boutique called me.”

Evan's expression changed.

“They said the account used to purchase it was under Hale Meridian Hospitality.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You don't know.”

She sent him a screenshot.

The charge had been disputed.

The company was investigating unauthorized executive expenses.

Evan stared at the image.

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Stay there.”

“No.”

He froze.

“I don't want to be hidden anymore.”

“Sienna.”

“I believed you.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“No, you don't.”

The line went silent.

Then she said, “Claire wasn't the problem.”

She hung up.

Evan lowered the phone.

For the first time, he realized Sienna was not angry because Claire had appeared at the gala.

She was angry because Evan had used her as part of a fantasy.

A fantasy that was collapsing.

Across town, Claire sat with Nora and Daniel.

A banker had arrived with additional records.

Claire read them slowly.

“What is this account?”

Daniel pointed.

“An investment account.”

“Whose?”

“That is the strange part.”

Claire looked closer.

The account had been opened fourteen years earlier.

Before her marriage.

Before Hale Meridian became successful.

The beneficiary was listed as Whitmore Family Preservation Trust.

Claire frowned.

“That trust doesn't belong to Evan.”

“No.”

“Then why did he transfer company money into it?”

Daniel looked at Nora.

Nora spoke.

“Because he couldn't access the money directly.”

Claire's eyes widened.

“How much?”

Daniel turned the page.

“Thirty-six million.”

Silence.

Claire stared at him.

“Thirty-six million dollars?”

“Over several years.”

“Why?”

“We don't know.”

Claire looked at the transaction history.

The transfers were small at first.

Then larger.

Then enormous.

But one detail kept appearing.

Every major transfer occurred within forty-eight hours of an acquisition by Hale Meridian.

Claire leaned closer.

“These aren't random.”

“No.”

“They're connected to specific deals.”

“Yes.”

“Then Evan wasn't stealing from the company.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not exactly.”

Claire looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means he may have been moving money somewhere else before anyone could see it.”

Nora's expression tightened.

“Claire, there is another problem.”

She pushed forward a document.

Claire read the heading.

WHITMORE FAMILY PRESERVATION TRUST — BENEFICIARY AMENDMENT.

Her stomach tightened.

“I never signed this.”

“We know.”

The signature at the bottom looked remarkably like hers.

But Claire knew immediately.

It wasn't hers.

Someone had copied it.

Then she saw the date.

Three years earlier.

And below the signature was one additional name.

Evan Hale.

Claire looked up.

“He forged my signature.”

Nora nodded.

“But that's not the worst part.”

She turned the page.

There was another beneficiary.

Claire's face went pale.

The name was not Evan.

It was not Sienna.

It was not any Hale.

It was someone Claire had never heard of.

Lucas Whitmore.

Claire whispered, “Who is Lucas?”

Daniel looked toward Nora.

Neither answered.

Then Nora said quietly,

“That is exactly what we need to find out.”
