Plot twist

Chapter 6 - GABRIEL’S SECRET MEETING AT THE BANK WASN’T A BETRAYAL — IT WAS THE REASON CLAIRE WAS STILL ALIVE

Dominic confronted Gabriel inside Nathan Cole’s law office.

Not Pier 18.

Not a warehouse.

Not somewhere men disappeared.

Lawyers present.

Federal agents nearby.

Gabriel walked in and saw surveillance photograph on table.

He did not flinch.

Dominic hated that.

“You were at Mercer’s bank.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Gabriel looked at Nathan.

“Can I speak freely?”

Nathan said:

“Nothing here is off-record unless covered by agreement.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Then I want cooperation counsel.”

Dominic stared.

“You need lawyer?”

“Yes.”

“Get one.”

They waited forty minutes.

When Gabriel’s attorney arrived, story changed.

Gabriel had not gone to steal ledger.

He went because Victor asked him to.

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“What?”

“Victor contacted me four days after you suspended him.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“He believed I was angry you surrendered his credentials.”

“Were you?”

“Yes.”

Honest.

“So I let him.”

“You became his mole?”

“I became his listener.”

Dominic stood.

“Without telling me.”

“If I told you, you would have tried to control.”

Probably.

Gabriel continued.

“Victor asked me to confirm Mercer’s bank.”

“How did you know?”

“I didn’t.”

“Then why there?”

“I gave him false branch.”

The photograph showed Gabriel at branch Victor believed.

“The forged court order?”

“Victor’s contractor arrived later.”

“You knew?”

“I warned bank security through anonymous counsel.”

Nathan looked toward prosecutor.

“That explains why order was intercepted before vault access.”

Gabriel nodded.

Dominic sat slowly.

“You protected ledger.”

“Yes.”

“Why not tell Claire?”

“She would have moved it and Victor would know I fed bad intel.”

“Why not tell me?”

Gabriel looked him directly.

“Because twenty years of loyalty taught me you react.”

Claire’s accusation.

Again.

Dominic said nothing.

Gabriel continued.

“When you started talking federal cooperation, I planned to disclose.”

“Convenient.”

“Yes.”

His lawyer slid phone logs.

Encrypted messages with Victor.

Recordings.

Gabriel had preserved all.

Victor ordering hospital schedule access.

Victor discussing leverage.

Victor asking whether Claire could be “made reasonable.”

Not explicit violence.

Enough.

Then one message stopped Dominic’s breath.

Victor:

If Claire’s movement creates problem, remove the variable before Hale can interfere.

Gabriel:

Meaning?

Victor:

You know what family survival means.

Dominic stared.

“Remove.”

Gabriel said:

“I assumed kidnapping.”

“Could mean kill.”

“Yes.”

Dominic’s hands curled.

He did not move.

Lawyers watched.

Good.

Then another.

Victor asked Gabriel:

The child stays with father. Mercer’s people can be managed.

Dominic’s blood became ice.

Victor’s plan was not only ledger.

It included Noah.

Take Claire out.

Leave baby to Dominic.

Because Victor believed Dominic’s desire for heir would outweigh grief.

That was how little Victor understood fatherhood.

Or how much he understood old Dominic.

Gabriel said:

“I refused.”

“Show me.”

Gabriel’s reply:

No child operations. No wife. Find another way.

Victor:

Then you’re becoming useless too.

There.

Gabriel looked at Dominic.

“He tried recruiting another team.”

“Who?”

“Two former port security contractors.”

“Location?”

“Federal agents picked them up yesterday.”

Dominic looked at prosecutor.

She nodded.

“Mr. Knox’s cooperation helped.”

Dominic exhaled.

The room was still.

Then:

“You should have told me.”

Gabriel almost laughed.

“Yes.”

“You didn’t trust me.”

“No.”

Dominic took that blow.

“Fair.”

Gabriel’s expression changed.

“You’re not going to hit me?”

“Do you want me to?”

“No.”

“Then no.”

Nathan muttered:

“Excellent legal development.”

No one laughed.

---

Claire was informed because the threat directly involved her.

Federal agents expanded protection.

Julian’s security protocols changed.

Claire listened to Gabriel’s recorded messages with Victor and turned pale.

The child stays with father.

She held Noah tighter.

Julian said:

“Dominic was not involved.”

“I know.”

“Gabriel appears to have prevented escalation.”

“I know.”

“But?”

Claire looked at him.

“This is what I married into.”

There.

Not a single affair.

Not one missed birth.

A system where men discussed mothers as variables.

Babies as succession.

Lives as leverage.

She had accepted too much because Dominic rarely brought violence home physically.

She told herself penthouse was separate.

The blood stopped at elevator.

It never had.

Julian said:

“Federal prosecutors want ledger voluntarily.”

Claire stared at Noah.

“What do you recommend?”

“Turn over through criminal counsel with privilege review and preservation of your rights.”

She nodded.

“Do it.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

Once, Claire had kept ledger as detonator.

Protection.

Now multiple copies existed.

Authorities knew.

It no longer needed to be private weapon.

“I don’t want to become Victor,” she said.

Julian frowned.

“What?”

“He controls people through secrets.”

Another.

“I kept ledger because I needed safety.”

“That was rational.”

“Yes.”

“But?”

“I don’t want to use it to make Dominic sign things.”

Julian’s mouth twitched.

“You are ruining my reputation as ruthless divorce counsel.”

“Sorry.”

“Not accepted.”

The ledger went to federal prosecutors that afternoon.

Not as bargain.

As evidence.

---

Then Serena Moretti requested immunity.

Her father had cut her off.

Bellandi’s neutrality pact collapsed when Swiss assets froze.

Victor stopped returning messages after warrant.

Serena suddenly discovered conscience.

Julian read proffer summary to Claire.

“She says Victor paid her twelve million dollars to deepen relationship with Dominic.”

Claire’s face went white despite expecting.

“Before Sicily?”

“Six months before.”

“Was she with him before?”

Julian hesitated.

“Apparently flirtation, no physical relationship until Palermo.”

Claire closed eyes.

Victor had staged pressure.

Serena had been paid.

Dominic had been baited.

Still.

He had crossed room.

Still.

“What else?”

“Victor told Serena if she kept Dominic in Sicily until summit ended, the marriage would likely fracture and Claire would file.”

“Why did Victor want divorce?”

“The continuity clause.”

Claire understood.

Divorce triggered Serena trust control.

Victor could then influence those assets through payments and Bellandi arrangement.

“Serena knew?”

“She claims only later.”

“Do you believe?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then:

“She has recordings.”

Claire’s stomach twisted.

“Dominic?”

“Yes.”

“Do I need hear?”

“No.”

She looked.

“Will custody require?”

“Maybe if relevant to character? Probably not affair details.”

“Then no.”

She did not need more pain to prove betrayal.

Then Julian said:

“One recording may matter differently.”

“What?”

“Dominic arguing with Victor after your labor call.”

Claire looked up.

“When?”

“3:23 a.m.”

Nine minutes after Gabriel’s call.

Serena had been awake.

Her phone captured room.

Victor:

You leave now, Bellandi walks.

Dominic:

Claire is in labor.

Victor:

Claire will still be in labor when summit ends.

Dominic:

She could deliver.

Victor:

Then she delivers.

Silence.

Then Dominic:

Fuel the jet for noon.

Claire’s eyes filled.

He had considered leaving.

Then chose noon.

Not now.

Victor:

Smart.

Recording continued.

Serena entered.

Dominic told Victor to leave.

Then silence.

Then Serena:

You look like man who wants excuse not to go.

Dominic:

Don’t.

Serena:

She already hates this life.

Dominic:

She doesn’t hate me.

Serena:

Not yet.

Claire stopped.

“Enough.”

Julian closed file.

There was no secret exoneration.

Only a man under pressure deciding badly.

That was somehow cleaner.

Dominic did not need to be framed for Claire to leave him.

He had failed honestly.

May you like

That meant if he ever changed, change would also have to be honest.

No villain could do it for him.
