Chapter 6 - THE DAY OF RECKONING

The seventy-two hours of arrogant confidence the Vance family had displayed dissolved into a pathetic, high-pitched wail of pure terror.

As the federal marshals closed in on the platform, the heavy metallic click of the restraints closing around Preston's wrists was the most satisfying sound we had ever heard.

"Evelyn, please!" Preston sobbed, his face wet with frantic, streaming tears as he looked at his mother, who was already handcuffed near the table.

"I didn't mean to hurt her! It was just a joke! We were trying to teach her a lesson!"

"A joke that involved holding an eight-year-old girl down by force and causing her scalp to bleed, Preston?" I asked, my voice carrying a freezing authority.

"A joke that involved siphoning four million dollars from our family's trust fund to cover your husband's Panama debts?"

My mother, Beatrice, fell to her knees on the Persian rug, her hands clutched over her chest as she wept in front of the officers.

"Evelyn, I am your mother!" she wailed, her gold cross necklace swinging uselessly in the cold air.

"You can't do this to your own parents! We raised you!"

"You didn't raise me, Mother," I said, looking down at her with dead, unyielding eyes.

"You managed your greed, and when you couldn't control the patents anymore, you tried to destroy my daughter."

"Take them away, Marcus," I ordered.

As the officers guided the weeping, screaming family members out of the room, the grand boardroom fell into a heavy, peaceful silence.

The remaining directors and investors stood in absolute, respectful silence as I took my place at the head of the table.

The whispers that had plagued my daughter's life for years were permanently silenced, replaced by the cold truth of their crimes.

I walked over to the dining table, picked up the gold-plated pen Preston had left on the waiver papers, and slowly, deliberately, snapped it in half.
