Chapter 2 - THE HUSBAND BEFORE RYAN

Ryan laughed.
It was the wrong reaction.
Too loud.
Too sharp.
The ballroom remained silent around him.
“Your husband?”
His eyes moved from Isabella to Luca.
“You’ve lost your mind.”
Luca did not react.
That was somehow more threatening than anger.
Isabella’s gaze stayed on Ryan.
“No.”
She lifted her champagne from the table.
“I finally found it.”
Vanessa stepped away from Ryan.
“Isabella, what does that mean?”
“It means Ryan and I were never legally married.”
The words hit the room like broken glass.
Ryan’s face emptied.
“That is insane.”
“Eleven weeks ago, my attorney discovered that the dissolution of my first marriage was never entered by the court.”
Ryan stared.
“First marriage?”
Isabella finally looked at Luca.
“When I was twenty-three, Luca and I married in Florence.”
Luca’s expression remained unreadable.
“We separated less than a year later. We both signed papers. We both believed the marriage was dissolved.”
Ryan’s voice rose.
“You married someone before me and never told me?”
“I told you I had been engaged.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No.”
She did not defend herself.
“I was ashamed of that period of my life. I wanted nothing connected to my family following me into what I thought was a normal marriage.”
Luca looked down briefly.
The word normal had landed.
Isabella continued.
“The petition was rejected on a jurisdictional issue after I moved back to New York. My attorney died before correcting it. Luca’s counsel assumed mine handled the final order.”
Ryan shook his head.
“No.”
“My current attorneys confirmed it with courts in both countries.”
“So what are you saying?”
“That the license you and I signed eight years ago created no valid marriage.”
His face flushed.
“You lived as my wife.”
“I did.”
“You took my name.”
“I did.”
“You stood beside me at every board dinner.”
“I did.”
“And now you walk in here with some gangster and tell everyone none of it counted?”
For the first time, Luca moved.
One step.
Isabella lifted her hand.
He stopped.
Ryan noticed.
So did half the ballroom.
Isabella answered quietly.
“It counted to me.”
That silenced him.
“I loved you. I built a home with you. I changed my life around yours. The court record does not erase what I believed.”
Her eyes hardened.
“But neither does what I believed erase what you did.”
Vanessa’s face had gone pale.
Ryan looked toward her.
Isabella saw it.
“There were three others.”
Vanessa turned slowly.
“What?”
Ryan’s jaw locked.
“Don’t.”
Isabella almost smiled.
“You wanted public tonight.”
She reached into her small silver clutch.
Three photographs.
Not explicit.
Hotel entrances.
Restaurant patios.
Ryan’s hand on different women’s backs.
Dates written beneath them.
Vanessa looked at each.
“One was after we started?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa’s hand left Ryan’s sleeve.
He whispered, “Vanessa.”
She stepped away.
That was not the reversal Ryan expected.
He had brought a mistress to humiliate his wife.
Instead, he had managed to humiliate both women.
Isabella placed the photographs back inside her clutch.
“This isn’t about revenge.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“You arrive dressed like this with him and call me a bigamist in front of half Manhattan.”
“Chicago.”
“What?”
“We’re in Chicago, Ryan.”
A few people near the table lowered their eyes to hide expressions.
His anger sharpened.
“You think this is funny?”
“No.”
Isabella looked at him for a long moment.
“I think I spent eight years making myself smaller so you could feel larger.”
She set down her untouched champagne.
“I’m finished.”
Ryan glanced toward Luca.
“Did he put you up to this?”
“No,” Luca said.
His voice was low.
Calm.
The first words he had spoken.
“Isabella called me.”
Ryan looked as if the idea offended him more.
Luca continued.
“I came because she asked me to stand beside her.”
“Stand beside her?”
Ryan sneered.
“You’re calling yourself her husband.”
“Legally, I am.”
“And what exactly are you otherwise?”
Luca’s eyes turned cold.
“That depends entirely on what she decides.”
Isabella looked at him.
There.
That was why she had called Luca after fourteen years.
Not because she trusted his family.
Not because the old feelings had magically healed.
Because when she told him what the attorneys discovered, Luca had said only one thing.
What do you want me to do?
No command.
No claim.
No assumption.
Ryan had not asked her that question in years.
From across the ballroom, Edmund Hoss finally approached.
The real-estate titan looked composed.
But Isabella noticed his gaze fall to the tiny silver knot on Luca’s lapel.
His step faltered.
Just once.
Interesting.
“Perhaps,” Edmund said carefully, “this discussion would be more appropriate elsewhere.”
Ryan seized the lifeline.
“Yes.”
Isabella turned toward Edmund.
“Why?”
His expression tightened.
“This is a charity gala.”
“And?”
“Certain matters should remain private.”
Luca looked at him.
“Which matters concern you, Edmund?”
The older man’s face changed.
He knew Luca.
Not socially.
Something deeper.
Before Edmund could answer, Matteo appeared at Isabella’s side.
He handed her a thin black folder.
“We confirmed it.”
She opened it.
Ryan saw the first page.
His entire posture changed.
“What is that?”
Isabella looked down at the signature.
Her signature.
Perfect.
Except she had never made it.
“Six weeks ago, Caldwell Meridian renewed a sixty-two-million-dollar credit facility.”
Ryan said nothing.
Vanessa looked at him.
Isabella continued.
“The renewal required spousal consent because certain collateral was represented as jointly controlled.”
Ryan’s eyes flicked toward Edmund.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
Isabella saw it.
So did Luca.
“You forged my name.”
Ryan’s voice dropped.
“You don’t understand the financing.”
“Then explain it.”
“Not here.”
“You keep saying that.”
She turned the page.
“The collateral includes property I have never discussed with you.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“What property?”
That answer was too quick.
He truly didn’t know.
Isabella looked down at the schedule.
A Manhattan building.
Three industrial parcels.
A private investment account.
And something called:
VARELLI FAMILY TRUST — SERIES C.
Ryan frowned.
“What the hell is the Varelli Family Trust?”
For the first time that night, Isabella almost pitied him.
Almost.
He had cheated on her.
Controlled her.
Used her signature.
But he truly had no idea whose name he had just said aloud.
Behind him, Edmund Hoss closed his eyes.
Luca’s expression became dangerous.
And Isabella heard a familiar voice from the ballroom entrance.
Older.
Italian.
Controlled enough to silence men who had never been frightened by anything respectable.
“It belongs to my daughter.”
Ryan turned.
May you like
The color left his face as Vittorio Varelli walked into the gala.
And for the first time in eight years, Isabella stood in the same room as her father.
