Plot twist

Chapter 10 - I TESTIFIED WITHOUT MY HUSBAND BESIDE ME

Trevor was released after serving just under three years with credit.

By then Nora was almost two.

I knew release date because restitution office sent notice.

He still owed me money.

Not much relative settlement.

Enough to matter symbolically.

The law required notification.

Roman asked:

“Do you want additional security?”

“Yes.”

He blinked.

Old Sadie would have minimized.

New answer surprised even me.

“Temporary.”

“Of course.”

“I don’t think Trevor will come.”

“Neither do I.”

“But I don’t want fear making decisions because I’m embarrassed to admit it.”

Roman kissed forehead.

“Good.”

Trevor moved into supervised transitional housing.

Worked in warehouse through reentry program.

No law.

No financial authority.

No contact with me.

Three months passed.

Then his probation officer reported he had asked permission to make a restitution payment larger than required.

He sold remaining interest in Hale Urban Ventures—what little survived forfeiture.

Payment arrived.

I did not call.

Six months later, Bennett Project invited me to speak before Illinois legislative committee about coerced debt protections.

Not Trevor.

Public policy.

I prepared thirty pages.

Priya reduced to eight.

“You are not giving audit report.”

“I like details.”

“Legislators don't.”

Roman offered to attend.

I said no.

He nodded.

No tension.

That morning, I entered statehouse with Priya and Elena.

No Roman.

No Arthur inside hearing room.

I testified.

“Three years ago, my former partner kicked me in a luxury shopping center.”

A senator looked surprised.

I continued:

“That incident became public because of where it happened and who I had married.”

Another.

“But the most damaging things he did occurred years earlier when nobody was watching.”

I described identity theft.

Fake LLCs.

Credit accounts.

The six hundred dollars.

Not for pity.

Policy.

“When financial abuse is treated as a private relationship issue, it becomes easy to ignore.”

Another.

“A forged signature for $2,000 can trap someone as effectively as one for $2 million if she cannot hire counsel.”

I described Bennett Project cases without identifying details.

Committee later advanced bill requiring faster credit freezes and clearer procedures for coerced-debt disputes tied to intimate-partner abuse.

It became law following year.

I did not write law alone.

Dozens did.

Still.

The waitress Trevor believed would never understand structure helped change one.

When I returned home, Roman stood in kitchen holding Nora.

“Mommy TV,” Nora announced.

Apparently Roman watched hearing.

“Traitor.”

“I streamed public proceedings.”

“You said you wouldn't attend.”

“I did not.”

Technical.

I laughed.

Then phone buzzed.

Email.

From Trevor.

Not direct—through restitution counsel.

Subject:

FINAL REQUIRED PAYMENT

He had completed restitution early.

Attached statement.

No letter.

No apology.

No request.

May you like

Just evidence.

I appreciated that more than anything he might have written.
