But June also wanted “family dinner.”
Serena frowned.
“Which family?”
“You.”
“Nolan.”
“Daniel.”
“Ava if home.”
Nolan’s current partner? He had been seeing a woman named Claire? Better introduce maybe "Evelyn Brooks", a high school administrator. Source said he was seeing someone years later, not named. Let's name Rachel? Avoid. Use "Mara Collins", nonprofit CFO. But Serena doesn't need meet if awkward. June said Mara too. Serena agreed because June.
Dinner at June’s.
Potential disaster.
Daniel calm.
Nolan arrived with Mara Collins, his partner of two years.
Serena liked her within fifteen minutes because Mara asked June where extra plates were and then got them herself without Nolan delegating.
Good sign.
Ava, now twenty-three, came.
No drama.
June looked around table and cried.
“Mom.”
Serena called.

“Never knew school schedule.”
“I thought loving meant making easy.”
“I taught you by example.”
Nolan swallowed.
“And I chose entitlement.”

Then June looked Daniel.
“Thank you for not making her small.”

“She does own size.”
Serena smiled.
Then Mara:
“And thank you for making Nolan pack his own suitcase.”

Wrong story. Daniel knows Nolan party. He joked "Glasswood". Serena laughed.
“Maybe nine.”
Then phone buzzed.
