Plot twist

Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT THE FORTRESS FAILED

Arthur moved first.

He drew his weapon and pushed Norah behind the kitchen island.

“Stay down.”

Matteo was already moving toward the stairs.

“Don't.”

Arthur caught his arm.

“Sir, we don't know how many.”

Matteo stopped.

Then he looked at Norah.

She had never seen him look so uncertain.

The security system was supposed to be impossible to breach.

Yet every monitor had gone black.

A second crash sounded upstairs.

Harper flinched.

“That's the nursery.”

Norah's heart stopped.

She started toward the stairs.

Matteo caught her.

“No.”

“My baby is up there.”

“There's nobody there.”

“Then why did I hear the glass?”

Arthur checked his phone.

“Camera feed is back.”

Everyone turned toward the nearest monitor.

The nursery appeared.

The crib was empty.

Norah couldn't breathe.

“Lucas.”

She had already chosen a name.

She had whispered it to her stomach for weeks.

Matteo went still.

“Arthur.”

“I'm checking the house.”

Then another camera came alive.

The nursery window.

Open.

Curtain moving in the night air.

A small stuffed rabbit lay on the floor.

Norah recognized it.

She had bought it for her unborn baby.

Her legs nearly gave out.

Matteo caught her.

“Where is the baby?”

“Not yet.”

“Don't tell me not yet.”

Arthur turned.

“Mrs. Rossi.”

“What?”

“There was never a baby in the nursery.”

Norah stared.

“What?”

“I moved the crib yesterday because the room wasn't finished.”

She looked at him.

Then understood.

Someone had broken into an empty room.

They weren't after the baby.

They were trying to make them panic.

Matteo exhaled.

But his relief lasted only seconds.

Arthur's phone rang.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“We found two vehicles outside.”

“Whose?”

“Carter Security.”

Matteo's face hardened.

“That isn't my company.”

Norah's blood ran cold.

“Then whose?”

Arthur looked at her.

“Your father's old company.”

Nobody moved.

The lights returned.

A moment later, the front gate opened.

No alarm.

No resistance.

A black sedan drove slowly into the courtyard.

Matteo looked at Arthur.

“Keep everyone inside.”

The vehicle stopped.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Calm.

He wore a dark coat and carried no visible weapon.

Matteo's expression changed.

“Uncle.”

Norah stared.

The man looked at her.

“Norah.”

Her heart pounded.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

He smiled faintly.

“So is your husband.”

Matteo stepped forward.

“Don't.”

His uncle ignored him.

He looked at Norah.

“Your father trusted the wrong man.”

She gripped the watch.

“You.”

“No.”

He looked at Matteo.

“Not me.”

Then his gaze returned to her.

“Your husband's father.”

Norah felt cold.

“What does he have to do with this?”

“Everything.”

Matteo said quietly:

“Leave her out of it.”

His uncle laughed.

“You still think you can protect her.”

“I can.”

“You couldn't even protect your marriage.”

The words hit hard.

Matteo's face tightened.

His uncle turned toward Norah.

“Your father left something that belongs to my family.”

“No.”

“It does.”

“What?”

“Your child.”

Norah covered her stomach.

“No.”

“Your father placed his remaining assets into a trust.”

“I know.”

“You don't know the condition.”

“What condition?”

His uncle smiled.

“The child must be born into the family line to activate the inheritance.”

Matteo stepped forward.

“That is not how the trust works.”

“Then ask the lawyer.”

Norah looked at Matteo.

“Is it true?”

He hesitated.

That was enough.

Her stomach dropped.

“You knew.”

“I knew there was a condition.”

“And you didn't tell me?”

“I didn't know the full terms.”

His uncle laughed.

“You're both still hiding things from each other.”

Harper suddenly spoke.

“That's not true.”

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“I read the trust.”

Norah stared.

“What does it say?”

Harper looked directly at Matteo.

“It says the child inherits only if both parents are alive and married at the time of birth.”

Silence.

Norah's blood froze.

Matteo looked at his uncle.

“You're lying.”

But his uncle was smiling.

“Am I?”

Then he pulled a folded document from his coat.

A copy of the trust.

And at the bottom, in her father's handwriting, was one sentence.

If Matteo abandons my daughter, the trust passes to the child under independent guardianship.

Norah looked at Matteo.

He looked back at her.

For the first time, she realized the betrayal wasn't just about Harper.

It was about whether Matteo had ever planned to let her control her own future.

Then his uncle said softly:

May you like

“Your husband didn't come home to save you.”

“He came home because the baby is worth billions.”
