Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN IN CLAIRE’S CHAIR

One year after the dinner that ended their marriage, Ruth Bennett announced another family dinner.

Claire laughed when she received the invitation.

“Absolutely not.”

Ruth called five minutes later.

“You’re coming.”

“I have trauma associated with your dining room.”

“I bought new chairs.”

“That doesn’t help.”

“You’re coming.”

Claire came.

This time she arrived alone.

Ethan was already there.

They had been dating again for eight months.

Slowly.

Privately.

They still lived separately.

The family had learned not to ask questions.

Ruth sat at the head of the table.

Her health had improved.

Richard was absent.

He and Ethan spoke occasionally now, but their relationship remained fractured.

Diane greeted Claire warmly.

Twenty people gathered.

Claire entered the dining room.

Then stopped.

Someone was sitting in her old chair.

A young woman.

Claire stared.

Ruth noticed and burst out laughing.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake.”

The woman immediately stood.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire began laughing too.

The young woman was Ethan’s cousin’s fiancée.

She had no idea.

Ethan walked over.

“Maybe we should put a plaque on it.”

Claire looked at him.

“CLAIRE’S CHAIR?”

“I was thinking DANGER: HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT.”

She elbowed him.

The family laughed.

Something healed in that moment.

A memory that had once carried humiliation now became survivable.

Dinner continued.

Halfway through dessert Ruth tapped her glass.

Everyone groaned.

“Last time she did this, attorneys got involved,” Ethan said.

Ruth glared.

“I can still remove you from my will.”

“Love you too, Grandma.”

Ruth looked at Claire.

“One year ago, I made an old woman’s mistake.”

Claire frowned.

“What mistake?”

“I called that chair your place.”

The room quieted.

Ruth continued.

“It wasn’t.”

She pointed toward Claire.

“Your place was never beside Ethan.”

Claire felt tears rise.

“Your place was wherever you decided to stand.”

Ruth looked at Ethan.

“And you needed to learn that before you deserved to stand beside her again.”

Ethan lowered his head.

Ruth lifted her wineglass.

“To Claire.”

Everyone raised glasses.

Claire wiped her eyes.

After dinner, she walked outside.

Ethan followed.

The November air was cold.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

They walked toward the garden.

Ethan slipped his hands into his pockets.

“I have something to tell you.”

Claire stopped.

“What?”

“I received an offer.”

“For the company?”

“No. Me.”

A major technology corporation wanted Ethan to become CEO.

The compensation was enormous.

The job required moving to California.

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“And you’re telling me now?”

“I wanted to know what I wanted before asking what you wanted.”

Claire nodded carefully.

“What do you want?”

“I turned it down.”

She stared.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want that life anymore.”

“Ethan, don’t make career decisions because of me.”

“I didn’t.”

He looked toward the house.

“I like what we’re building here.”

Mercer Works had expanded.

Bennett Advanced Systems was healthy again.

Ethan had begun mentoring young founders.

“I spent years thinking bigger meant better.”

He smiled.

“Turns out sometimes bigger just means farther away from dinner.”

Claire laughed.

Then she noticed something.

Ethan was nervous.

Very nervous.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re doing the thing.”

“What thing?”

“The investor-meeting face.”

“I don’t have an investor-meeting face.”

“You absolutely do.”

Ethan exhaled.

Then he reached into his pocket.

Claire’s heart stopped.

“Ethan.”

He froze.

She stared at the small velvet box.

“Don’t.”

His face fell.

Claire stepped closer.

“Not yet.”

He nodded immediately.

“Okay.”

No argument.

No disappointment disguised as pressure.

He put the box away.

Claire touched his face.

“You bought a ring?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

“And you’ve been carrying it?”

“Not every day.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Most days.”

Claire laughed through tears.

“I’m not ready.”

“I know.”

“Does that hurt?”

“Yes.”

The honesty made her love him more.

“But I can wait.”

Claire kissed him.

Then whispered:

“Ask me again someday.”

May you like

Ethan smiled.

“I will.”
