Chapter 4 - The Warrant at Damian’s Door

The police arrived at Damian’s apartment at 6:14 on a Tuesday morning.
Seven officers.
One detective.
A search warrant signed the night before.
Detective Aaron Blake stood at the front.
Damian opened the door wearing sweatpants and a plain gray T-shirt.
“You’re Damian Reed?”
“Yes.”
“We have a warrant to search the premises in connection with financial theft, computer fraud, and possession of stolen banking credentials.”
Damian read the warrant.
His expression remained calm.
“May I call counsel?”
“You can call whoever you want after we secure the apartment.”
Damian stepped aside.
He did not mention that three apartments on the floor belonged to Aster Vale security staff.
He did not activate the silent alarm inside his watch.
He did not resist.
Because the fastest way to understand manufactured evidence was to let the people planting it reveal where they expected police to find it.
Blake entered the bedroom personally.
That was the first mistake.
Most lead detectives supervised a search.
Blake searched a specific suitcase.
Inside a false lining, he “found” three encrypted bank tokens, printed resort account numbers, and a flash drive.
He held the evidence bag high enough for a body camera.
“Looks like we got lucky.”
Damian looked toward him.
“Does it?”
Blake’s smile faded slightly.
The second mistake occurred when another officer found sixty thousand dollars in cash behind the dresser.
Damian’s apartment security cameras recorded Blake’s junior partner entering that room alone five minutes earlier.
Blake did not know the cameras existed.
Aster Vale temporary residences used concealed security after Damian’s father’s kidnapping.
The footage streamed to an independent server.
By 6:31, Evelyn Marsh was watching from Aster Vale headquarters.
She called federal counsel.
Damian was arrested at 6:48.
News cameras somehow reached the building before the patrol vehicle left.
Tiffany posted at 7:02.
I wish I could say I’m surprised. For years we watched Damian manipulate my sister. Now authorities are finally discovering what kind of man he is.
Rachel saw the arrest on television.
Her coffee cup slipped from her hand.
Martin stood beside the screen.
“I told you.”
Rachel looked at the timestamp on Tiffany’s post.
“How did she know?”
“What?”
“Police have not released the charges.”
“It’s obvious.”
“No. She posted before the news station identified the investigation.”
Martin waved the concern away.
“Tiffany probably heard through Gavin.”
Exactly.
Rachel called Olivia.
“Something is wrong.”
“Do not contact Tiffany.”
“I think she knew about the warrant.”
Olivia had already seen the arrest.
“Damian’s attorney will handle it.”
“Who is his attorney?”
At the courthouse, Rachel learned.
Evelyn Marsh arrived with a legal team from one of the largest corporate firms in Washington.
Reporters recognized her immediately.
Questions erupted.
“Ms. Marsh, why is Aster Vale’s general counsel representing Damian Reed?”
Evelyn stopped.
“We are not discussing client relationships.”
That answer created more speculation.
Financial reporters began searching Damian.
They found consulting agreements between him and Aster Vale subsidiaries stretching back years.
Board minutes remained private.
Ownership records remained hidden.
But the broke-husband story began developing cracks.
At arraignment, prosecutors alleged Damian stole banking credentials from the Carter resort package and attempted to reroute sixty million dollars into offshore accounts.
Evelyn stood.
“The sixty-million-dollar loan was never funded.”
The prosecutor looked confused.
“The defendant attempted diversion before funding.”
“From what account?”
A bank investigator passed a note to the prosecutor.
The destination account cited in the police affidavit did not exist until five days after Damian reported the forged signature.
That problem had not reached the local detective’s report.
The judge granted Damian release without bail because he had no criminal history, surrendered voluntarily, and had counsel.
Blake looked angry.
Damian left through a restricted courthouse exit.
Rachel waited near the underground garage.
Evelyn saw her first.
“You should not be here.”
“I need to speak with Damian.”
“He does not owe you a conversation.”
“I know.”
The words surprised Evelyn.
Damian appeared behind her.
He stopped when he saw Rachel.
She had rehearsed apologies.
None survived.
“I think Gavin did this.”
Damian’s face revealed nothing.
“Why?”
“Tiffany knew about the warrant before the charges were public.”
“That could mean many things.”
“I recorded a call. She admitted Gavin’s lawyers altered the authorization after I signed.”
Damian remained still.
“Give it to your attorney.”
“I did.”
“Good.”
“I’m sorry.”
His expression finally changed.
Not softened.
Tired.
“For which part?”
“All of it.”
“That is too large to be useful.”
Rachel swallowed.
“For standing beside Tiffany after she hit you.”
He waited.
“For telling you to sign fraudulent documents.”
He waited again.
“For letting my family treat you like you were worthless because I wanted their approval more than I wanted to question why you stayed quiet.”
Damian looked toward the garage entrance.
“Rachel, I cannot process our marriage while I’m defending myself against a fabricated felony.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
“Then help the truth. Not me.”
The distinction hurt.
She nodded.
“What do you need?”
“Nothing directly. Cooperate with investigators. Preserve messages. Do not warn Tiffany or Gavin.”
Rachel took a breath.
“Did you know someone would plant evidence?”
“I suspected retaliation.”
“And you let police arrest you?”
“I let the warrant execute.”
“Why?”
“Because whoever built this needed confidence.”
Rachel stared.
The Damian she married had always become strangely calm when everyone else panicked.
She called it emotional distance.
Now she understood that calm belonged to a man accustomed to decisions with enormous consequences.
“Who are you?” she whispered.
His eyes met hers.
“The person you married.”
“That is not what I mean.”
“I know.”
He walked away.
The next morning, federal investigators visited the police department.
Not because Damian called them.
Because the bank’s fraud-monitoring system identified fabricated account data included in the warrant affidavit.
The system belonged to a cybersecurity subsidiary of Aster Vale.
When investigators compared timestamps, they discovered the supposedly stolen account credentials had been created from an IP address connected to Gavin’s resort office.
Detective Blake had entered the same data into the warrant application eleven hours later.
Aster Vale counsel obtained the apartment security footage.
It showed Officer Miles Grant placing the cash behind Damian’s dresser.
A separate angle showed Blake opening Damian’s suitcase before the official search team entered the bedroom.
The flash drive did not belong to Damian.
Its purchase record traced to a convenience store near Blake’s home.
By evening, Blake had been suspended.
Officer Grant requested an attorney.
Gavin deleted three email accounts.
And Rachel received a message from Tiffany.
We need to meet. No lawyers. Family only.
Rachel stared at the screen.
May you like
Then forwarded it to Olivia.
For the first time in years, she did not answer her sister before speaking to someone independent.
