Plot twist

Chapter 4 - ROOM 417

“Victor.”

Gabriel said the name like it was a verdict.

Luca moved toward the door.

“Stay here.”

Gabriel caught his arm.

“No.”

“You don't know what's waiting outside.”

“Neither does Victor.”

Elise stared at them.

“You're both making the same mistake.”

Gabriel turned.

“What mistake?”

“Thinking this is about money.”

She picked up the old photograph.

“It never was.”

Gabriel looked at the baby in the picture.

“Then what was taken?”

Elise's expression softened.

“A child.”

The room became silent.

She explained what she knew.

Norah's mother, Marianne, had given birth to a son in 1993.

The baby had been sick.

A wealthy family had offered medical care.

Then the child vanished.

The official records were incomplete.

Marianne had spent years believing the Costa family had taken him.

Gabriel shook his head.

“My father would never—”

Elise interrupted.

“You don't know what your father would do.”

Gabriel wanted to argue.

He couldn't.

His father had built an empire by making people afraid.

Elise continued.

“Marianne found evidence that your father's organization had used the child's identity to hide financial transfers. She took a ledger proving it.”

“And Victor?”

“Victor was the man sent to retrieve it.”

Gabriel stared at the photograph.

“So my father was watching Norah because he thought her mother still had the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“And Norah?”

“She grew up carrying a secret she didn't understand.”

Gabriel's voice dropped.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

Elise looked directly at him.

“Would you have listened?”

He had no answer.

Luca stepped closer.

“We need to get to St. Agnes.”

Elise shook her head.

“Room 417 hasn't been a hospital room in fifteen years.”

Gabriel looked at the brass key.

“Then why the number?”

“Because some things survive after buildings change.”

They left.

The old hospital had become a medical archive and community clinic.

Room numbers had been replaced.

But the fourth floor remained.

Gabriel walked down a narrow corridor lined with framed photographs of the hospital's history.

At the end was a storage room.

The brass key fit.

Inside were old patient records, photographs, and boxes.

Gabriel found the number 417 written on one.

He opened it.

Inside was a child's knitted blue sweater.

A hospital bracelet.

And an old cassette tape.

No note.

No explanation.

Just the objects.

Gabriel touched the sweater.

Something about it felt familiar.

Then he noticed a tiny embroidered letter.

D.

“Daniel,” Elise whispered.

Gabriel looked at her.

“You know that name?”

“My mother used it.”

“Daniel was the baby's name?”

Elise nodded.

Gabriel sat down.

For years, he had believed his family history began with his father.

Suddenly, he understood that his father's secrets had begun before Gabriel was even born.

He turned over the cassette.

A date was written on it.

October 14, 1998.

The same date as the photograph.

Luca found an old player in another box.

The tape crackled.

A man's voice emerged.

Gabriel recognized his father.

“If you're hearing this, then I failed to keep the past buried.”

Gabriel's heart hammered.

His father's voice continued.

“Marianne believed I took Daniel.”

A pause.

“I did not.”

Gabriel looked at Elise.

The recording continued.

“Victor did.”

Silence.

Then his father's voice became quieter.

“He believed the boy could be used to control Marianne. He was wrong.”

Gabriel leaned closer.

“My father knew?”

“Yes,” Elise whispered.

“He found out too late.”

The recording crackled.

“Norah is innocent. If she ever marries into this family, protect her from the truth until she is strong enough to understand it.”

Gabriel shut his eyes.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“And if Gabriel ever hurts her, don't protect my son. Protect Norah.”

The tape clicked off.

Nobody spoke.

Gabriel sat motionless.

His father had known.

He had anticipated Gabriel becoming the kind of man who might destroy the woman he loved.

And Norah had somehow learned the same truth.

Luca suddenly looked toward the doorway.

“We're not alone.”

Gabriel stood.

A shadow moved across the corridor.

Luca reached for his weapon.

Gabriel raised a hand.

“Wait.”

Footsteps approached.

A woman appeared.

She was older, exhausted, and holding a folded coat against her chest.

Gabriel recognized the coat.

It had belonged to Norah.

The woman looked at him.

“I'm Miriam.”

Elise gasped.

“Marianne's nurse.”

Miriam nodded.

“I helped your wife's mother hide Daniel.”

Gabriel stared.

“Where is he?”

Miriam's eyes filled with tears.

“He grew up.”

“Where?”

“Right here in Chicago.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“Tell me.”

Miriam looked at Luca.

Then at Elise.

Then back at Gabriel.

“Norah doesn't know this.”

“What?”

Miriam opened the coat.

Inside the lining was a child's drawing.

Two babies.

A woman.

And a man standing far away.

Above them was written in childish handwriting:

MY FAMILY IS COMING HOME.

Gabriel stared.

“That is Norah's handwriting.”

“No,” Miriam said.

“She drew that last week.”

Gabriel's blood ran cold.

“Norah was here?”

Miriam nodded.

“She came to see me three days before she gave birth.”

Gabriel's voice cracked.

“What did she ask you?”

Miriam looked directly at him.

“She asked me where Daniel was.”

Gabriel's heart stopped.

“And I told her.”

“Where?”

Miriam slowly pointed toward the hallway.

“Room 417 wasn't a room.”

“It was a person.”

She handed Gabriel a folded card.

One name was written on it.

DANIEL MARLOWE.

Underneath was an address.

Gabriel unfolded it.

The address belonged to a small rehabilitation center on the outskirts of Chicago.

And beneath the address, Norah had written four words.

He knows about Gabriel.

Gabriel looked up.

Luca's phone began vibrating.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

A pause.

Then:

“Say that again.”

He lowered the phone.

“Boss.”

Gabriel stared at him.

“What?”

“The rehabilitation center just reported that a woman matching Norah's description was there.”

Gabriel's chest tightened.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“Where did she go?”

Luca hesitated.

“She left with the twins.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“Which direction?”

Luca looked at him.

“She didn't leave alone.”

Gabriel's eyes hardened.

“Who was with her?”

May you like

Luca answered quietly.

“Daniel Marlowe.”
