Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BURNED

The police surrounded the building.
Alex raised his hands when they entered.
"Federal agents."
Samuel stepped forward.
"He's with me."
An agent pushed him back.
"Alex Bennett, you're under arrest."
Bianca screamed.
"No!"
Alex looked at her.
"Don't."
He remained calm.
The agent read the charges.
Fraud.
Money laundering.
Conspiracy.
Financial theft.
Alex stared at the papers.
Every accusation had been carefully constructed.
Every transaction had his name.
Every signature looked authentic.
He was taken away.
Bianca stood frozen.
Then Ethan whispered—
"They wanted this."
She looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because Alex is the only person who can expose them."
Bianca's eyes hardened.
"Then we expose them."
For the first time in six years, she stopped being afraid.
She called Lena.
Then Samuel.
Then Thomas.
Within hours, they had the safety deposit box.
Inside were bank records.
Audio recordings.
Photographs.
Contracts.
And a confession from Richard Hale.
The evidence showed that Richard had created shell companies.
He had moved money through Alex's accounts.
He had used Alex's identity while Alex was overseas.
He had even manipulated military travel records.
The final recording was from Daniel Bennett.
Alex's father.
His voice was weak.
"If you're hearing this, Richard has already begun the final phase."
A pause.
"He will frame Alex."
Bianca closed her eyes.
Daniel continued.
"My son must never know that I sacrificed his future to protect him."
The recording ended.
Bianca cried.
Then Ethan pointed to another file.
"There's more."
A spreadsheet.
Names.
Payments.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Patricia Bennett.
Alex's mother.
Bianca stared.
"She was paid."
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
"Look."
The payments were real.
But then Ethan found the corresponding documents.
Patricia had accepted money.
Not for herself.
For Alex.
Every payment had been transferred into a trust.
Bianca whispered—
"She was building his future."
Lena cried.
"Mom protected us."
The evidence was delivered to federal investigators.
Two days later, Alex was released.
The charges were dropped pending investigation.
He walked outside the courthouse.
Bianca was waiting.
She didn't run to him.
She simply stood there.
Alex walked toward her.
"You came."
"I promised."
He smiled.
"You're still here."
"I'm not leaving again."
He stopped.
"Bianca."
She looked up.
"I loved you before I knew how to say it."
Alex's eyes filled.
"I loved you before I knew how to stay."
They stood quietly.
Then Alex kissed her.
Not desperately.
Not impulsively.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like a promise.
When they separated, Bianca laughed through tears.
"Six years."
"Too long."
"Much too long."
A voice behind them interrupted.
"Excuse me."
Noah stood there with Lena.
Alex smiled.
His son ran toward him.
"Dad!"
Alex dropped to his knees.
Noah crashed into his arms.
Alex held him tightly.
"I missed you."
Noah frowned.
"But you just came back."
"I know."
"Then don't leave again."
May you like
Alex closed his eyes.
"I won't."
