Plot twist

Chapter 2 - THE FIVE MEN AT THE DOOR

The first brother arrived twenty-three minutes later.

Daniel.

He did not slam the front door.

He did not shout my name.

He simply walked into the house wearing a charcoal suit, carrying a leather briefcase, and looked around the entryway with the calm expression of a man who had already decided that whatever happened next would be handled carefully.

Ivan came out of the kitchen.

His face changed immediately.

“What are you doing here?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Jessi called me.”

“She called all of you?”

“Yes.”

Ivan laughed.

It was the nervous kind of laugh I had heard from him only a handful of times.

“This is ridiculous.”

Daniel said nothing.

He glanced toward the staircase.

“Where is Fiona?”

“Upstairs.”

“With my sister?”

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded.

Then he noticed the red mark on my daughter's wrist when I brought her downstairs.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I knew my brother.

He had spent most of his adult life learning how to keep emotion out of his face.

“What happened to her wrist?”

Ivan answered immediately.

“She was being difficult.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I didn't ask what she was being.”

Ivan's jaw tightened.

“I said she was difficult.”

“And I asked what happened to her wrist.”

Chloe appeared behind Ivan.

“This is getting absurd.”

Daniel looked at her for the first time.

“Who are you?”

She stared.

“I’m Chloe.”

“I know your name.”

He glanced at the torn dress on the kitchen counter.

“I’m asking why you're in my sister's house.”

Chloe folded her arms.

“Ivan invited me.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then Ivan can explain that.”

He looked back at my husband.

“But first, explain the child.”

Ivan's face reddened.

“You're acting like I abused her.”

Daniel's voice remained quiet.

“I haven't called it anything.”

“That mark isn't what you think.”

“Then tell me what it is.”

Ivan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I watched the realization hit him.

He had spent the last hour shouting at me because he thought shouting created authority.

Daniel did not need to shout.

That made Ivan uncomfortable.

The front door opened again.

Marcus walked in.

Then Noah.

Then Ethan.

And finally Luke.

All five stood in the entryway.

For the first time in eleven years, Ivan looked genuinely uncertain.

Fiona whispered beside me,

“Mommy.”

I squeezed her hand.

“You're safe.”

Ivan looked from one brother to the next.

“What exactly is this?”

Marcus removed his coat.

“Family meeting.”

“This isn't your house.”

“No.”

Marcus looked toward Chloe.

“But it is my sister's.”

Noah walked past them.

He was the largest of my brothers, broad-shouldered and quiet, with the kind of presence that made strangers move aside without being asked.

He stopped beside Fiona.

“Hey, peanut.”

Fiona's face softened.

“Uncle Noah.”

He crouched.

“Want to come outside with me?”

She nodded.

He looked at me.

I nodded back.

Noah took Fiona to the living room.

Luke remained near the door.

Ethan took out his phone.

Daniel opened his briefcase.

Marcus looked at the dress.

“Ten thousand dollars?”

Ivan immediately said,

“Yes.”

Marcus nodded.

“That's what we're discussing?”

Ivan stared.

“What else would there be?”

Marcus looked toward Fiona.

“The wrist.”

Silence.

Chloe stepped forward.

“Fiona ripped my dress.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Did she?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see her do it?”

“Yes.”

“Who else saw it?”

Chloe hesitated.

“Ivan.”

Marcus looked at Ivan.

“You saw Fiona tear the dress?”

“I saw the aftermath.”

Marcus smiled faintly.

“So no.”

Ivan's expression hardened.

“Don't play games.”

“I don't need to.”

Marcus pointed toward the dress.

“The seam was cut.”

Chloe's face went pale.

“How would you know?”

“Because I own a bank.”

He walked closer.

“That kind of tear doesn't happen when a child catches fabric on something.”

Chloe crossed her arms.

“You're accusing me?”

“No.”

Marcus looked at the dress again.

“Not yet.”

Ethan suddenly spoke.

“Jessi.”

I looked at him.

“Can you give me your phone?”

I handed it over.

He photographed the wrist mark.

Then the dress.

Then the kitchen.

Then the scissors lying beside the sink.

Ivan stepped forward.

“What are you doing?”

“Documenting.”

“For what?”

Ethan looked at him.

“I'm not sure yet.”

That answer frightened Ivan more than any accusation could have.

Daniel motioned toward the dining room.

“Let's sit.”

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at Ivan.

“Now.”

We sat.

Fiona remained beside Noah.

Chloe sat next to Ivan.

I sat across from them.

My five brothers spread around the table.

It looked less like a family dinner than a corporate board meeting.

Daniel placed his hands on the table.

“Jessi told us Chloe accused Fiona of destroying a dress worth ten thousand dollars.”

Ivan nodded.

“She did.”

“Jessi told us you threatened to throw them out.”

“I said there would be consequences.”

“She told us you threatened Fiona with being sent away.”

Ivan looked at me.

“You twisted my words.”

Fiona suddenly spoke.

“You said bad children go somewhere else.”

Ivan's face hardened.

“Fiona.”

Noah immediately put a hand on the back of her chair.

“It's okay.”

Fiona looked at him.

Noah smiled.

“Tell the truth.”

She nodded.

Daniel looked at Ivan.

“Anything else?”

“No.”

Daniel turned to Chloe.

“Did you cut the dress?”

Chloe laughed.

“No.”

Ethan slid a photograph across the table.

It showed the scissors.

Then another.

The blade had a thin silver thread caught between it.

Chloe looked at the photograph.

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But Ethan saw it.

So did I.

Marcus leaned back.

“Interesting.”

Ivan grabbed the photograph.

“This proves nothing.”

“No,” Ethan said.

“It doesn't.”

He took out another photograph.

This one showed the inside seam of the dress.

A small line of fresh cuts.

Chloe stared.

I remembered Fiona's words.

She saw me when she cut it.

Then another detail surfaced.

The dress had been placed on the counter.

Not hanging.

Not folded.

Placed exactly where an eight-year-old would see it.

A trap.

Daniel looked at Chloe.

“Why was the dress here?”

She hesitated.

“I was showing Ivan.”

“For what?”

“I wanted his opinion.”

“On what?”

“The dress.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

“You came to another woman's house wearing a ten-thousand-dollar dress and brought scissors?”

Chloe stood.

“This is insulting.”

Daniel's voice remained calm.

“Sit down.”

She sat.

Ivan slammed his palm against the table.

“Enough!”

Luke finally spoke.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

He had said only one word.

But Ivan went quiet.

Luke's eyes were fixed on the torn dress.

Then he looked at Fiona.

“Who touched you?”

Fiona hesitated.

“Chloe.”

Chloe shook her head.

“She is lying.”

Luke looked at Fiona.

“Did she hurt you?”

Fiona nodded.

Luke looked at Chloe.

His face remained expressionless.

Then he turned to Daniel.

“That's enough for tonight.”

Daniel nodded.

He closed the briefcase.

“We're taking Fiona and Jessi somewhere safe.”

Ivan stood.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“You're not taking my wife and daughter anywhere.”

I stared at him.

“Your daughter?”

His face changed.

He knew immediately what he had said.

I stood.

“No.”

Ivan looked at me.

“Jessi.”

“You don't get to call her your daughter when you're threatening to throw her away.”

“That isn't what I meant.”

“You said it.”

He stepped closer.

“You're making this bigger than it is.”

“No.”

I looked at Chloe.

“You did.”

Chloe stared back.

Then she smiled.

It was small.

Cold.

Confident.

And that smile told me something.

She wasn't frightened of my brothers.

She wasn't even frightened of losing the marriage.

She believed she had something bigger.

Something Ivan had not told me.

Then she reached into her handbag.

Pulled out a document.

And placed it on the table.

“Maybe we should stop pretending this house belongs to you.”

My stomach tightened.

I looked at the paper.

Ivan suddenly stood.

“Chloe.”

She looked at him.

“What?”

He was furious.

“You weren't supposed to bring that.”

Daniel picked up the document.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

He handed it to me.

I looked down.

It was a property agreement.

My name was on it.

So was Ivan's.

But there was a third name.

Chloe Mercer.

I looked at my husband.

“What is this?”

Ivan said nothing.

Chloe smiled.

“Something your husband signed three months ago.”

Daniel's face hardened.

Marcus took the paper.

Ethan stood.

Noah returned from the living room.

Luke closed the front door.

And I realized the dress had never been the real fight.

The dress had been the excuse.

May you like

The real plan had started months ago.

And my husband had already signed something that could cost us our home.
