Plot twist

Chapter 13 - MARGARET RETURNED TO THE MARBLE HOUSE ONE LAST TIME, AND I WENT WITH HER BY CHOICE

The old house had been sold years ago.

Then resold.

A charity home tour included it after renovation.

Margaret saw listing.

Called me.

“Would you go?”

I almost said no.

Why?

Not fear exactly.

But why open?

Then I asked:

“Why do you want to?”

“To see it without pretending it was mine.”

That answer.

I agreed.

Caleb offered come.

“No.”

He nodded.

My choice.

Margaret and I arrived separately.

The foyer looked different.

Marble remained.

Walls lighter.

Console gone.

No silver basin.

New family photographs.

Children’s shoes near stairs.

Normal.

I stopped where I had knelt.

Body remembered.

Knees.

Back.

Sophia moving.

Margaret stood several feet away.

No reaching.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

She looked around.

“I thought owning space made me important.”

“You didn’t own it.”

“I know.”

“Caleb did legally then.”

“Yes.”

“But I acted like his ownership extended mine.”

“Yes.”

We walked.

Kitchen renovated.

Margaret touched counter.

“Do you hate me?”

Question decades late.

“Sometimes I hated you.”

“Now?”

“No.”

“Forgive?”

I thought.

“I don’t think forgiveness is one switch.”

She nodded.

Then:

“Why did you let me know Sophia?”

“Because behavior changed.”

“Not because family?”

“No.”

She smiled sadly.

“Good.”

On way out, homeowner’s little girl ran down stairs.

Mother said:

“Ask before taking Grandma’s purse.”

Child stopped.

“Can I?”

Grandmother laughed.

“Yes.”

Tiny.

I looked Margaret.

She understood.

Outside, rain started.

Margaret opened umbrella.

“Share?”

“Yes.”

We walked to cars.

Not mother-daughter.

Not friends exactly.

Family in strange chosen form.

The house behind us belonged to someone else.

May you like

Good.

No one’s identity needed marble.
