Chapter 8 - VANESSA CAME BACK WITH AN APOLOGY ELENA DIDN’T OWE HER

Vanessa was released from federal custody after serving twenty-six months.
By then, almost four years had passed since wedding.
I assumed we would never see her again.
I was wrong.
Her attorney contacted Elena directly.
Not Daniel.
Not me.
Elena showed me email.
Ms. Hale, Ms. Hartley would like opportunity to apologize privately. She understands you are under no obligation to accept.
I said:
“No.”
Elena looked at me.
“Excuse me?”
“No.”
“You don't decide.”
I knew immediately.
Old habits.
“I’m sorry.”
“Better.”
“Do you want to see her?”
“I don't know.”
She took three days.
Then said yes.
Meeting happened at nonprofit office.
Neutral location.
I drove Elena but did not enter.
She asked.
“I’ll wait outside.”
Vanessa arrived in ordinary clothes.
No designer label visible.
Hair shorter.
Face thinner.
Elena later told me everything.
Vanessa sat.
For several seconds, she could not speak.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
Elena waited.
Vanessa continued.
“I spent prison rehearsing explanations.”
“That doesn't sound promising.”
“I know.”
She almost smiled.
Then:
“My father controlled money when I was growing up.”
Elena said nothing.
“He gave gifts and took them away.”
Another.
“He paid tuition but threatened to stop if I chose major he disliked.”
Another.
“He bought me apartment but reminded me every month it was his.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I learned ownership meant power.”
Elena finally spoke.
“And that made glue reasonable?”
“No.”
Good.
Vanessa continued:
“It made me understand how I became someone who thought humiliation proved control.”
She cried.
“But it doesn't excuse it.”
Elena asked:
“Why me?”
The same question she had asked Daniel.
Vanessa answered differently.
“Because you were what I couldn't control.”
Elena frowned.
“You were kind even when I was cruel.”
Another.
“Daniel cared what you thought even when he pretended not to.”
Another.
“You never competed with me.”
Her voice broke.
“And somehow that felt like you were winning.”
Elena almost laughed.
“There was no competition.”
“I know.”
Now.
Vanessa continued:
“I thought if I made him choose me against you, I would feel safe.”
Elena stared.
“And when he laughed at glue?”
“I felt powerful.”
No softening.
“I hate that.”
Then:
“I am sorry I tried to turn your son’s love into a weapon against you.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
Vanessa took envelope.
Not money.
Letter.
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
“I also owe you this.”
Inside were pearl earrings.
Elena’s?
No.
A pair Vanessa had mocked at bridesmaids lunch, maybe she bought replacement? Better: a handwritten note with exact list of incidents. Hmm. Could be original pearl necklace? Elena left pearl necklace on table line 411. What happened to it? At wedding Elena removed pearl necklace and placed on table. Could Vanessa have kept it? But father followed Elena; necklace remained. Venue staff may have secured. Let's instead use necklace.
“Your necklace.”
Elena froze.
The pearl necklace she left on wedding table had disappeared after we left.
Venue staff believed bridesmaid packed it.
It was never found.
We assumed lost in chaos.
Vanessa had taken it.
“Why?”
Vanessa cried.
“I don't know.”
Maybe trophy.
Maybe anger.
“I found it in my bridal bag the next morning.”
“And kept it four years.”
“Yes.”
Elena touched pearls.
“My mother gave me these.”
“I know.”
“You knew?”
“Daniel told me after.”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I was too embarrassed to return them.”
Elena laughed sharply.
“So embarrassment justified keeping stolen property?”
“No.”
At least she had learned answer.
Elena put necklace away.
Then said:
“I don't forgive you today.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I understand.”
“I may someday.”
Tears.
“But if I do, you won't get to use it as proof that what you did wasn't serious.”
“I won't.”
“And you do not contact Daniel through me.”
“I won't.”
“What will you do now?”
Vanessa looked toward window.
“Work.”
“Where?”
“A reentry program offered administrative job.”
“Good.”
“Nothing glamorous.”
Elena smiled faintly.
“Glamour is overrated.”
Meeting ended.
When Elena got into car, I said nothing.
She put pearls on.
My throat tightened.
“I thought they were gone.”
“So did I.”
“How do you feel?”
“Strange.”
“Do you forgive her?”
“No.”
Then:
“But I don't hate her.”
We drove.
A month later, Daniel learned Vanessa had returned necklace.
He asked mother:
“Did she ask about me?”
Elena answered:
“No.”
That hurt.
Useful.
Vanessa moved on.
No reunion.
No dramatic triangle.

Daniel had spent enough life believing women existed in relation to him.
His mother and ex-wife were allowed separate stories.
