Plot twist

Chapter 4 - CELESTE VAUGHN WAS NOT WHO LUCIEN THOUGHT SHE WAS

Celeste Vaughn had been born Celeste Marie Carver.

Lucien learned that at 7:40 the next morning.

Dominic handed him the background report without commentary.

Lucien read the name twice.

“What is this?”

“Her sealed legal name change.”

“Why was it sealed?”

“She changed it at eighteen.”

“Why?”

Dominic sat opposite him.

“Her mother remarried.”

“That’s normal.”

“Yes.”

Lucien turned the page.

Celeste’s mother was Anne Carver.

Her second husband:

Marco Moretti.

Lucien stopped breathing.

For several seconds, the room seemed to narrow around him.

“No.”

Dominic said nothing.

Lucien looked up.

“No.”

“Records indicate the marriage lasted eleven months.”

“Marco is Vincent’s son.”

“Yes.”

“How old was Celeste?”

“Seventeen when they met. Eighteen when they married.”

“That makes him—”

“Twenty-two years older.”

Lucien stood.

“She was married to my cousin.”

“Technically your father’s cousin’s son.”

“Don’t.”

Dominic nodded.

Lucien walked toward the window.

“How did we miss this?”

“Because Vaughn Strategic’s background review was vendor-level.”

“I had her in my bed.”

Dominic said nothing.

Lucien turned.

“You’re thinking it.”

“Yes.”

“Say it.”

“You investigated bankers more thoroughly than the woman you risked your marriage for.”

Lucien flinched.

Dominic did not enjoy it.

That almost made it worse.

“Where is Marco?”

“Unknown.”

“Alive?”

“Social Security records show no death.”

“Financial?”

“Minimal domestic footprint.”

“International?”

“We’re checking.”

Lucien’s jaw tightened.

“Does Elena know?”

“Rebecca does.”

Of course.

Lucien laughed bitterly.

“Everyone calls her first now.”

Dominic’s patience cracked.

“She left you, Lucien.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Lucien stared.

Dominic continued.

“You keep reacting as though she changed teams.”

“She is my wife.”

“She is a woman you betrayed.”

Lucien’s eyes hardened.

“I know what I did.”

“No. You know what happened.”

Dominic leaned forward.

“You still speak as though consequences are a temporary administrative inconvenience.”

Lucien wanted to throw him out.

Instead he sat.

“What else?”

Dominic looked surprised by the question.

Then continued.

Celeste’s financial history was mostly clean.

She had worked in communications.

Then finance-adjacent consulting.

Founded Vaughn Strategic four years earlier.

No criminal record.

No obvious connection to Marco after the brief marriage.

But one oddity stood out.

Her company’s first major investor was an offshore entity based in Cyprus.

The beneficial owner was hidden behind layers.

Rebecca’s team had identified a probable connection to Marco.

Lucien stared.

“So she built her company with his money.”

“Possibly.”

“And then came to me.”

“Yes.”

Lucien remembered their first meeting.

A private investment conference.

Celeste introduced herself after his panel.

She told him his answer about family-controlled real estate had been brilliant.

Elena had been there that afternoon.

She had disagreed with Lucien publicly about overleveraging Hudson Meridian.

Later, Lucien had complained.

Celeste had listened.

Admired.

Agreed.

He now saw the pattern with unbearable clarity.

She had not simply made him feel needed.

She had studied what would make him stop asking questions.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Lucien answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then Celeste’s voice.

“Lucien.”

He stood.

“Where are you?”

“I’m safe.”

“Where?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Are you with Marco?”

Silence.

There.

Lucien’s face changed.

“You knew.”

“Lucien—”

“You knew who he was.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Always.”

He closed his eyes.

Dominic stood.

Lucien put the call on speaker.

“Why?”

Celeste began crying.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Before or after you moved into my house?”

“I didn’t know you were bringing me there.”

“That is not the question.”

“I’m scared.”

Lucien’s anger stopped.

Not vanished.

Stopped.

Her breathing sounded uneven.

“Of Marco?”

“Yes.”

“Is he with you?”

“No.”

“Did he hurt you?”

“Not physically.”

“What does he want?”

“The schedule.”

Lucien looked at Dominic.

“What schedule?”

Celeste was silent too long.

“The Moretti-Hayes Security Schedule.”

Lucien’s chest tightened.

“Why?”

“Because it can destroy him.”

“How?”

“It contains evidence against Vincent.”

“Vincent is dead.”

“Not just Vincent.”

“Then who?”

“Marco helped.”

Lucien sat slowly.

“How old was he?”

“Old enough.”

Celeste’s voice shook.

“He carried money. Delivered messages. Helped intimidate contractors. Antonio knew.”

“Matteo knew.”

“Yes.”

“Samuel Hayes?”

“I don’t know.”

Lucien stared at the desk.

“Why did you marry him?”

Celeste’s silence stretched.

Then:

“My mother owed him money.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“What?”

Celeste continued.

“Marco financed her restaurant after my father died. She couldn’t repay him.”

Lucien closed his eyes.

“I was eighteen.”

Her voice cracked.

“He told me marriage would erase the debt.”

Lucien’s anger shifted shape.

Not forgiveness.

Not trust.

Something darker.

“You were forced?”

“I said yes.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I didn’t understand what saying no would cost my mother.”

Lucien knew men like Marco.

His father had tried to remove them from the family.

Lucien had spent his adult life pretending those men belonged only to history.

“You left him.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Antonio helped me.”

Lucien froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

That landed harder than everything else.

“Antonio knew you?”

“He knew who I was.”

“When?”

“Twenty years ago.”

Lucien looked toward the portrait of his father on the library wall.

“What did he do?”

“He gave my mother money. Helped us leave. Paid for the name change.”

Lucien’s voice dropped.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Marco found me again three years ago.”

“And?”

“He wanted the security schedule.”

“So you came to me.”

Silence.

Lucien’s eyes closed.

“Yes,” Celeste whispered.

Dominic looked away.

Lucien felt the humiliation become physical.

“Was any of it real?”

Celeste began crying harder.

“The beginning wasn’t supposed to be.”

He said nothing.

“I was supposed to get access.”

“To what?”

“Antonio’s archives.”

“And the affair?”

“I didn’t plan…”

“Stop.”

Celeste went silent.

“Do not tell me you accidentally slept with me for eighteen months.”

“No.”

“Did you love me?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Lucien laughed once.

It sounded broken.

Celeste continued desperately.

“I did.”

“Enough to betray Elena.”

“Yes.”

“Enough to betray Marco?”

“Yes.”

“Not enough to tell me the truth.”

Silence.

Lucien’s hand tightened around the phone.

“What about the baby?”

Dominic closed his eyes.

Celeste did not answer.

Lucien stood.

“What about the baby?”

“He’s yours.”

Lucien went completely still.

“He?”

Celeste inhaled sharply.

“I found out last week.”

“You said you didn’t want to know.”

“I changed my mind.”

“Is he mine?”

“Yes.”

“Did you test?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know?”

“Because Marco and I have not been together in years.”

Lucien’s jaw tightened.

“At least one lie removed.”

“Lucien—”

“Where are you?”

“I can’t.”

“Celeste.”

“If Marco knows I called you—”

“He already knows you were inside my life.”

“Not like this.”

Dominic quietly texted security to begin tracing the call.

Celeste’s voice dropped.

“I found the schedule.”

Lucien stopped breathing.

“Where?”

“In your archive.”

“You took it.”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

“With me.”

“Why?”

“Because Marina told Marco the vault had been opened.”

“Marina works for him?”

“Yes.”

Lucien swore.

“She processed Elena’s signature.”

“I know.”

“Did you tell her to?”

“No.”

“Did Marco?”

“I think so.”

Dominic’s face sharpened.

Lucien said:

“Explain.”

Celeste took a trembling breath.

“Marco wanted Hudson Meridian tied deeply enough to Hayes assets that any future dispute would force the Moretti and Hayes families into litigation.”

“Why?”

“To expose the security schedule.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It does if he wanted the companies fighting publicly.”

Lucien’s mind raced.

“Discovery.”

“Yes.”

Dominic muttered:

“Jesus.”

Celeste continued.

“He believed the schedule would surface once both sides started subpoenaing old agreements.”

Lucien’s face went cold.

“So the fake approval wasn’t only about financing.”

“No.”

“It was bait.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know?”

“At first, no.”

“Then when?”

“Three months ago.”

“And you stayed silent.”

“I was afraid.”

“You were sleeping beside me.”

“I know.”

“You knew someone was using my wife’s signature.”

“I knew Marina had manipulated authorization. I didn’t know exactly how.”

“That distinction will mean a lot to Elena.”

Celeste cried.

“I was going to tell her.”

“When?”

No answer.

Lucien felt something inside himself crack.

Not because Celeste had lied.

Because Elena had once told him exactly what was wrong.

You wanted worship.

He had dismissed it as anger.

Now he understood how dangerous worship could be.

A person who never challenged you could hide almost anything behind agreement.

“Bring the schedule to the police.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Marco has someone watching me.”

“Then tell me where you are.”

“No.”

“Celeste, you are pregnant.”

“I know.”

“Let me protect you.”

She laughed bitterly.

“That is exactly how men in your family always say it.”

Lucien went silent.

Celeste continued.

“Protection. Loyalty. Family.”

A pause.

“Then someone else decides what you’re allowed to know.”

Lucien thought of Elena.

He had no defense.

“Fine,” he said.

Celeste stopped.

“What?”

“Tell me what you need.”

“I need Elena.”

Lucien’s face hardened automatically.

Then he caught it.

“Why?”

“Because the schedule legally belongs partly to Hayes.”

“Yes.”

“And because Marco believes you’ll destroy it if it threatens your family.”

Lucien swallowed.

“Would I?”

Celeste did not answer.

That hurt.

Dominic looked at him.

Lucien asked again.

“Would I?”

Celeste whispered:

“I don’t know.”

Neither did Lucien.

That was the terrifying part.

He ended the call only after Celeste agreed to send Rebecca a location through an encrypted channel.

Then he sat in silence.

Dominic waited.

Finally Lucien said:

“Call Elena.”

Dominic raised an eyebrow.

“You call.”

Lucien looked at the phone.

For the first time, he hesitated.

“What do I say?”

Dominic stared at the man who had once negotiated billion-dollar debt packages without notes.

“The truth.”

Lucien called.

Elena answered.

He said:

“Celeste used me.”

Silence.

Then Elena replied:

“Yes.”

Lucien almost laughed.

“Could you pretend to be surprised?”

“No.”

Fair.

He continued.

“She has the schedule.”

Elena’s tone changed immediately.

“Where?”

“She’s sending Rebecca a location.”

“What does she want?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“Because she doesn’t trust me.”

Elena went quiet.

Lucien looked at his father’s portrait.

Then said the words that would once have been impossible.

“She probably shouldn’t.”

May you like

And for the first time since Elena walked away, she heard something in his voice that did not sound like a man trying to win.

It sounded like a man beginning to understand exactly what he had lost.
