Chapter 6 - THE EIGHT MILLION DOLLAR TRAP

The interrogation room was colder than it needed to be.
I sat across from two federal investigators.
A lawyer sat beside me.
Dad waited outside.
For the first time since the divorce, I understood what it meant to have your life reduced to paperwork.
Dates.
Signatures.
Transfers.
Account numbers.
No emotions.
No history.
No explanation.
Just evidence.
The investigator placed a document in front of me.
"Did you authorize this transfer?"
"No."
"Is this your signature?"
"It looks like mine."
"That wasn't the question."
I looked at him.
"No."
He nodded.
"Did you have access to this account?"
"No."
"Did you know it existed?"
"No."
"Did you receive any benefit?"
"No."
"Then why is the account in your name?"
"I don't know."
That answer sounded terrible.
But it was the truth.
After three hours, they released me.
Not because they believed everything.
Because Dad had already contacted a federal attorney who understood financial crimes.
Outside, Dad hugged me.
"You okay?"
"No."
He nodded.
"Good answer."
I almost smiled.
Peter approached.
"We found something."
"What?"
"The digital signature."
"What about it?"
"It wasn't created on your computer."
"Then whose?"
He looked at Dad.
"Daniel's."
My stomach tightened.
"Can you prove it?"
"Yes."
"Then why haven't they arrested him?"
"Because he's outside the country."
Dad looked at me.
"But we can bring him back."
"How?"
Peter opened a laptop.
"His mistake."
I leaned closer.
"Daniel used your card to attempt the $998,000 purchase."
"So?"
"He didn't just use the card number."
"He used the digital wallet attached to it."
I frowned.
"Meaning?"
"His phone authenticated the transaction."
I stared.
"So?"
"So we know his device."
"Can you track it?"
"Not directly."
"But?"
Peter smiled.
"We can trace the authentication."
He pulled up a map.
The device had appeared in three locations.
Manhattan.
JFK.
Then Zurich.
Dad looked at me.
"He's there."
"Can we get him?"
"Eventually."
But then Peter zoomed in.
"There."
A second device.
Same account.
Different phone.
Located in New York.
I frowned.
"Who?"
"Unknown."
"Could be Vanessa?"
"No."
"Margaret?"
"Her phone is being monitored."
"Then who?"
Peter shook his head.
"We don't know."
Dad stared at the screen.
"Find it."
The next forty-eight hours became a race.
Federal agents searched properties.
Banks froze accounts.
Lawyers filed emergency motions.
The media began reporting on the divorce.
Then someone leaked the $998,000 transaction attempt.
The headline appeared everywhere.
EX-CEO'S EX-WIFE BLOCKS NEARLY $1 MILLION LUXURY PURCHASE AFTER DIVORCE.
I hated it.
My private humiliation had become entertainment.
Then another headline appeared.
HAYES MERIDIAN OWNER QUESTIONED OVER $8 MILLION INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER.
That one was worse.
People began speculating.
Employees panicked.
Clients called.
The company's stock dropped.
I thought Daniel had destroyed my marriage.
Now he was threatening everything my family had built.
I went to the office.
Employees stared.
Some whispered.
Others looked away.
I walked into the conference room.
Our senior management team was waiting.
I stood at the head of the table.
"I know what's happening."
No one spoke.
"I know the company is being investigated."
Still silence.
"And I know some of you are afraid."
A senior executive finally spoke.
"Are we going to lose the company?"
I looked around.
"No."
The word came out stronger than I expected.
"We are going to find the truth."
I spent the next three weeks rebuilding the company's financial controls.
Every vendor reviewed.
Every payment audited.
Every access credential changed.
Every dormant account frozen.
I discovered something surprising.
The employees weren't angry.
They were relieved.
They had suspected something for years.
They simply didn't know who to trust.
One employee came into my office.
Her name was Julia.
She had worked for Hayes Meridian for eleven years.
"I need to tell you something."
"What?"
"Daniel once asked me to approve a vendor payment."
"How much?"
"Two hundred thousand."
"Did you?"
"No."
"Why?"
"The invoice looked wrong."
"What happened?"
"He fired me."
I stared.
"You're still here."
"I was reinstated after you changed departments."
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"He told me you'd fire me too."
I closed my eyes.
Another manipulation.
Another person he had controlled.
I stood.
"Julia."
"Yes?"
"Thank you for refusing."
She began crying.
I hugged her.
That was when I realized something.
Daniel's biggest weapon had never been money.
It had been fear.
He had convinced everyone that speaking would cost them everything.
I refused to let that continue.
Months passed.
The investigation grew.
Then Switzerland froze the account.
The eight million dollars was secured.
Daniel was no longer able to move it.
But he still hadn't been arrested.
Until one morning, my phone rang.
Detective Collins.
"Emily."
"Yes?"
"We found him."
My heart stopped.
"Where?"
"Zurich."
"Is he arrested?"
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"He contacted us."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"He wants to come home."
I didn't expect that.
"Why?"
"He says he has evidence."
"Against whom?"
"Everyone."
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Daniel had finally realized that his only way out was to cooperate.
Two days later, he returned to New York under federal supervision.
I watched from a distance as he entered the courthouse.
He looked different.
Older.
Smaller.
No perfect suit.
No confident smile.
No Vanessa.
No audience.
Just Daniel.
When he saw me, he stopped.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said,
"I'm sorry."
I looked at him.
"I believe you are."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I loved you."
I shook my head.
"Maybe you did."
He looked confused.
"But you loved what I gave you more."
He lowered his eyes.
"That's fair."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"It's not fair."
"Because I didn't deserve any of it."
He nodded.
"I know."
Then he whispered,
"There's one thing you still don't know."
"What?"
"Your mother didn't die naturally."
My entire body froze.
"What did you say?"
Daniel looked at the agents beside him.
Then back at me.
"She knew too much."
I couldn't breathe.
"My mother died of cancer."
"That's what they told you."
I stared.
"Who are they?"
Daniel's face went pale.
"The people who killed Thomas."
I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
"Who?"
May you like
He looked directly into my eyes.
"The people who are still alive."
