Chapter 3 - THE COLD HAVEN

The warmth of the hallway was completely swallowed by the ancient, damp chill that rose from the exposed crawlspace.
Daniel lifted his ten-year-old son, Leo, out of the darkness, his arms wrapping around the boy’s frail, shivering frame.
Leo felt incredibly light, as if the ten months of isolation had slowly hollowed him out from the inside.
His clothes were dirty, his hair matted with dust, but his hazel eyes were wide open, staring at his father through a blur of tears.
"Daddy..." Leo whispered, his voice a fragile, hoarse thread that barely carried across the quiet hallway.
"She... she told me you were never coming back."
"She said if I made a sound, the bad men would take Inés too."
Mariana pulled both of them against her chest, her tears wetting the collar of her son's dirty shirt as she sobbed.
"You are safe now, my love," she choked out, her body shaking with a profound, emotional relief that she had never expected to feel again.
"Nobody is ever going to put you in the dark again."
Daniel slowly stood up, his eyes turning toward his sister, who was now standing near the front door of the mansion.
Patricia’s hands were shaking so violently that she could barely hold her car keys, her eyes darting toward the driveway.
"Why, Patricia?" Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm register of absolute fury.
"Why did you take my son?"
"Why did you build this beautiful, expensive house on top of his prison?"
"I... I didn't have a choice, Daniel," Patricia stammered, her voice rising in a high-pitched, desperate panic.
"They were going to ruin me."
"Julian said it was the only way to secure the trust fund before the federal auditors closed the family accounts."
Before she could reach the doorknob, the high-pitched, rhythmic wail of police sirens began to echo through the quiet streets outside.
The bright red and blue tactical lights danced frantically against the high windows, signaling the arrival of the authorities.
The door was violently thrown open, and Captain Marcus Bennett of the Federal Treasury's Forensic Division stepped inside.
He was flanked by three uniform deputies, their weapons drawn, their eyes scanning the scene with a cold, professional discipline.
"Secure the perimeter!" Marcus commanded, his voice carrying the absolute, military authority of a federal raid.
