Plot twist

Chapter 2 - WHAT HIS MOTHER WAS AFRAID OF

“What exactly were you afraid I would find out?”

Daniel’s question cut through the ballroom.

Eleanor Harden stood perfectly still.

For eight years, I had imagined seeing that woman again.

Sometimes I imagined screaming at her.

Sometimes I imagined throwing the leather folder she had used to destroy my life straight into her face.

But I had never imagined standing across from her with Daniel’s daughters beside me while hundreds of people watched her lose control.

Amanda looked between them.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “what is happening?”

He did not answer.

His eyes remained on his mother.

Eleanor slowly straightened her shoulders.

“You’re making a scene at your own wedding.”

“You made the scene eight years ago.”

His voice was quiet.

That somehow made it worse.

Betty squeezed my hand.

“Mom, why is that lady mad?”

I looked down.

“Stay beside me.”

Mia leaned closer.

“Are we in trouble?”

“No.”

I meant it.

Whatever happened next, I would not let these girls believe they had done something wrong.

Daniel heard me.

Something shifted in his expression.

He looked at them again.

Then at me.

“Take them somewhere private.”

“No.”

I said it before thinking.

Daniel frowned.

“Rachel—”

“I spent eight years being told where I could go, what I could say, and what I was allowed to know.”

My voice shook, but I kept going.

“My daughters aren't leaving this room so your family can decide what happens next.”

Silence settled over the guests.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Fair.”

Eleanor looked furious.

“Daniel, you have no idea what you're doing.”

“Then tell me.”

“I was protecting you.”

“From what?”

Her eyes moved toward the girls.

“From her.”

I felt Betty's fingers tighten around mine.

Daniel's face hardened.

“That's not an answer.”

“It is the only answer you need.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“For eight years, I believed Rachel stole from my company.”

Eleanor said nothing.

“I believed she ran because federal investigators were coming.”

Still nothing.

“I believed she was pregnant with another man's child.”

My heart stopped.

Betty looked at me.

Mia looked confused.

Daniel swallowed.

“You told me that.”

Eleanor finally spoke.

“You were young.”

“I was thirty-one.”

“You were vulnerable.”

“I loved her.”

“And she was destroying you.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You never showed me proof.”

“I had proof.”

“Then where is it?”

Eleanor looked toward the ballroom entrance.

For one second, I thought she might leave.

Instead, she said something that made my blood run cold.

“The proof was never yours to see.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

Before Eleanor could answer, a man approached from the side of the room.

He was in his sixties, silver-haired, wearing an old-fashioned black tuxedo.

I recognized him immediately.

Martin Vale.

Daniel's father's former attorney.

He had been present at the Harden family meetings I attended during the first years of my relationship with Daniel.

I hadn't seen him since before the wedding that never happened.

He stopped beside Eleanor.

“Mrs. Harden.”

She looked at him sharply.

“You were told not to come.”

Martin ignored her.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Your father left something for you.”

Daniel frowned.

“My father has been dead for eleven years.”

“I know.”

Martin reached inside his jacket.

Not a document.

A small silver pocket watch.

Daniel went completely still.

I remembered it.

His father had worn that watch every Sunday.

Daniel had once told me it was the only possession his father refused to put in a safe.

Martin held it out.

“Your father instructed me to give this to you if the truth about the Mercer incident ever became relevant to your life.”

Eleanor's face changed.

Daniel took the watch.

His thumb moved over the scratched silver lid.

“What truth?”

Martin looked at Eleanor.

Then at me.

“Not here.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Here.”

Martin hesitated.

Then he said quietly,

“Your father believed your mother had manipulated the company's internal investigation.”

A murmur spread through the guests.

Amanda stepped backward.

“What?”

Eleanor's voice became sharp.

“Martin.”

But Daniel raised one hand.

“Let him speak.”

Martin looked uncomfortable.

“Your father discovered irregularities in the investigation shortly before he died.”

“What kind?”

“Payments.”

“To whom?”

“Private investigators. Consultants. Security contractors.”

Daniel's face went pale.

“Connected to Rachel?”

Martin nodded.

I felt dizzy.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because your father died before he could finish his review.”

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“You knew.”

She said nothing.

He took one step toward her.

“You knew.”

“I knew there were questions.”

“You told me Rachel was guilty.”

“I told you what I believed.”

“You knew there were questions!”

His voice finally broke.

Mia jumped.

I crouched beside her.

“It's okay.”

Daniel noticed.

He immediately lowered his voice.

“I'm sorry.”

The apology wasn't to me.

It was to the girls.

That mattered more than I expected.

Martin cleared his throat.

“There is something else.”

Daniel looked at him.

Martin reached into his jacket again.

This time he removed an old photograph.

The edges were yellow.

The picture showed Daniel's father standing outside the Harden headquarters.

Beside him stood a much younger Eleanor.

And behind them was a man I didn't recognize.

Daniel took the photograph.

He turned it over.

There was handwriting on the back.

His father's.

Daniel read it silently.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

I asked.

He looked at me.

“My father wrote your name.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

Underneath my maiden name were six words.

SHE KNOWS WHERE THE MONEY WENT.

Daniel looked toward his mother.

“What money?”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

For the first time, she looked tired rather than powerful.

Then she whispered,

“The money that built Harden Systems.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

She looked at him.

“It means your father lied to you too.”

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

Amanda suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, we need to postpone the wedding.”

Everyone looked at her.

She swallowed.

“I don't know what this is, but I won't marry you while your family is tearing itself apart.”

Daniel looked at her.

For a moment, sadness crossed his face.

Then he nodded.

“I understand.”

Amanda removed her engagement ring.

She placed it gently on the table.

“I need time.”

Then she walked away.

Daniel didn't stop her.

Instead, he looked at me.

“Rachel.”

I shook my head.

“Don't.”

“I need to know what happened.”

“So do I.”

He looked down at Betty and Mia.

Then he did something I had never expected.

He crouched.

Not dramatically.

Not for the guests.

He simply lowered himself until he was at their eye level.

“Hi.”

Mia stared at him.

Betty remained cautious.

Daniel smiled nervously.

“I think I'm your father.”

Mia looked at me.

“Mom?”

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.”

The word barely came out.

Daniel's eyes filled.

Betty asked the question only a child would think to ask.

“Does that mean we have to call you Dad?”

Daniel laughed softly through his tears.

“No.”

He looked at both girls.

“You can call me whatever feels right.”

Mia considered this.

“Can I still call you Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

Betty looked at his watch.

“That's old.”

Daniel glanced down.

“My father gave it to me.”

“Does it work?”

He smiled.

“It does.”

Betty held out her hand.

“Can I see?”

Daniel removed it.

But before he could place it in her palm, Eleanor spoke.

“Don't give that to her.”

Everyone turned.

Her face had gone white.

Daniel slowly looked at the watch.

Then at his mother.

“Why?”

Eleanor's lips trembled.

“Because your father hid something inside it.”

The room went silent.

Daniel opened the watch.

A tiny folded strip of paper fell into his palm.

He unfolded it.

His expression changed.

Then he looked directly at me.

“Rachel.”

“What?”

He held out the paper.

There were three words written on it.

ASK HER ABOUT COLUMBUS.

I stared at the message.

I had never heard the name before.

Eleanor had.

She closed her eyes.

May you like

And whispered,

“God help us.”
