Chapter 3 - THE THREAT LANDSCAPE

The transition from a publicly humiliated wife back into the sovereign chairperson of the Sterling Cyber Alliance was completed before the first regional police cruiser could even pull into the hotel’s circular driveway.
I left Adrian standing in the center of that silent, ruined ballroom, surrounded by the ghosts of his investors’ trust. I walked out through the heavy mahogany doors, my posture perfectly rigid, guided by a secure detail of four plainclothes tactical security officers who had been waiting in the lobby since the event began.
Outside, the autumn rain was lashing violently against the glass facade of the financial district. I stepped into the rear compartment of an unmarked, armored mobile command transport vehicle. The door shut with a heavy, pressurized thud that completely severed the frantic, chaotic sounds of the ballroom behind me.
Beside me sat my lead litigation attorney, Blanca, her high-definition monitors displaying the complete, real-time transaction mapping of ValeTech’s primary infrastructure routing arrays.
"He fell for the bait exactly the way you predicted, Clara," Blanca said smoothly, her fingers rapidly entering multi-layered verification strings into the terminal. "The moment he authorized the deployment of the third-quarter defense infrastructure code, he triggered our hidden tracking nodes."
"Adrian didn't just alter the data distribution filters to clear his personal debts," she explained, turning the screen to show a complex web of international bank transfers. "He used your family’s private security foundations as fraudulent collateral to mask a massive espionage syndicate routing restricted state data through our northern terminal servers."
"He actively signed three separate unauthorized asset allocations last Tuesday, fully confident that your quiet lifestyle meant you would never check the secondary digital ledgers."
"He told the integration board that I was merely a symbolic trustee, a quiet widow's daughter with no active management understanding of cybersecurity parameters," I stated, my voice completely devoid of any remaining warmth as I signed the formal asset clawback files.
"He believed my patience was a permanent license to exploit my father’s legacy to build his executive illusions. He truly believed that a man in a custom navy suit could buy his way out of a federal compliance trap."
"He forgot that the core encryption algorithm that runs ninety percent of ValeTech’s military logistics software was patented under my maiden name, Sterling, before he ever designed his first line of commercial code."
"The federal grand jury unsealed our primary wire fraud and state security indictments exactly twenty-four minutes ago," Blanca confirmed, a cold, dangerous satisfaction settling behind her eyes. "The second the morning trading bell rings, his entire operational framework will be placed under a total administrative quarantine."

"Let him try to log into the corporate mainframe tomorrow morning, Blanca," I said quietly, looking out the reinforced window as the neon signs of the city blurred past.
"When he realizes the vault door has been permanently locked from the inside, we will step onto the floor."
