Plot twist

Chapter 4 - THE DRESS WITH A SECRET IN ITS HEM

Alessandra Moretti arrived at Nikolai’s residence at eight in the morning.

She was eighty-one, dressed in black wool, and carried a silver-handled cane she did not appear to need. Two men followed her into the library, but she dismissed them before sitting.

Her gaze moved from Nikolai to me.

“You put my ring on the wrong hand.”

“I had not agreed to marry anyone.”

“Good.”

I had expected outrage.

Instead, she smiled.

“My grandsons treat marriage like a shipping merger. It is reassuring that one person in this family understands consent.”

Nikolai placed the detonator on the table.

“Your warehouse credentials were used.”

Alessandra barely glanced at it.

“Then someone copied them.”

“Who has access?”

“Dante Bellini.”

The councilman oversaw Moretti security procurement and maintained emergency credentials for senior family members.

“He wants Julian to succeed,” I said.

“He wants a patriarch he can control,” Alessandra corrected. “Julian believes Dante serves him. That is what makes Julian useful.”

“Why give Nikolai your ring if you knew it placed me in danger?”

Her eyes hardened.

“Every woman who wears that ring has been in danger. The question is whether the man beside her pretends otherwise.”

Nikolai did not defend himself.

Alessandra looked at me again.

“Do you want to marry my grandson?”

“I met him in a service corridor six hours ago.”

“You have known Julian for two years and still chose poorly.”

“I did not choose Julian. My parents arranged the alliance.”

“Then perhaps six honest hours are worth more than two obedient years.”

She rose.

“The ring contains no tracking device, poison, key, or ancient family curse. It is jewelry. Do not let men turn every object a woman wears into a claim over her.”

With that, she left.

I began to understand why the city feared her.

Not because she raised her voice.

Because she never wasted one.

Penny arrived with clothes and bad news.

“My office was searched,” she said. “They took the Hart files.”

“Copies?”

“Safe.”

“Anything else missing?”

“The emergency drive I sewed into your engagement gown.”

I stared at her.

“You put a drive in my dress?”

“Your mother had started searching your apartment. I needed somewhere she wouldn’t look before the gala.”

“Apparently Serena looked there.”

The drive contained my private audit of Hart Capital. I had prepared it after noticing unexplained transfers but never connected them to Marcus, Dante, or the succession.

If Julian found it, he could identify every account I had traced and destroy the remaining evidence.

“We need the gown,” I said.

Nikolai shook his head.

“No.”

“My condition said you do not make decisions for me.”

“My answer concerns security, not permission. You are free to go. I am free to tell you the Halston is controlled by men who attempted to shoot and bomb us.”

“Serena is staying in the Moretti penthouse?”

“Yes.”

“Then send someone she trusts.”

“She trusts no one,” Penny said. “But she underestimates me.”

Penny arranged a private fitting under the pretense of photographing Serena’s “historic engagement dress” for a society magazine.

She entered the penthouse wearing a camera harness that transmitted live video.

Nikolai and I monitored from a secure suite one floor below.

Serena stood before a mirror while two stylists adjusted the gown I had designed.

She looked beautiful.

That truth hurt in a way I hated.

Not because she wore it better.

Because I had imagined wearing that dress on the night my family finally celebrated me.

The fantasy had always been the real theft.

Penny circled her with the camera.

“The hem appears uneven,” she said.

“It was made for Evelyn,” Serena replied. “She’s broader.”

Penny’s jaw tightened, but she remained professional.

“I can pin it.”

She knelt near the hidden seam.

Julian entered.

“Stop.”

Penny looked up.

He held a small black drive between two fingers.

“Looking for this?”

The transmission cut out.

I stood.

Nikolai blocked the door without touching me.

“Wait.”

“He has Penny.”

“He wants us to react before we know where his guards are.”

My phone rang.

Julian.

“Come upstairs alone,” he said. “Or your photographer falls from the balcony.”

“She is an attorney.”

“Then she can explain liability on the way down.”

I looked at Nikolai.

He opened a secure channel to his team.

“No visible weapons,” I said. “If Julian sees movement, he’ll hurt her.”

Nikolai’s jaw flexed.

“You are giving operational orders in my hotel.”

“It’s technically your family’s hotel.”

A dangerous spark of amusement crossed his face.

“Proceed.”

I entered the penthouse alone.

Penny stood near the balcony with a guard behind her. Julian held the drive. Serena had changed into a robe, but my gown lay across the sofa.

“You wanted the dress back,” Julian said. “I’m willing to return it.”

“What is the price?”

“Withdraw the alliance.”

“No.”

“Then sign the share transfer.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“You were easier when you still wanted your parents’ approval.”

“You were more convincing when I thought arrogance was confidence.”

His smile disappeared.

Serena watched from beside the fireplace.

I turned to her.

“Did you know he threatened Penny?”

“She broke into our suite.”

“She came for evidence sewn into my dress.”

Serena looked at Julian.

“You said it was a tracking chip.”

“It tracks money,” I said. “Money our parents stole.”

Julian grabbed my gown and sliced through the hem with a knife.

Pearls scattered across the floor.

Something inside me went still.

Four months of work fell apart in his hands.

He expected me to cry.

I looked only at Penny.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

Julian held up the drive.

“This contains nothing now. Dante’s people already copied it.”

“Then why keep it?”

His silence answered.

The drive contained something he did not understand.

Penny had encrypted the files with a phrase known only to us.

I stepped closer.

“You need me to open it.”

“I need your biometric authorization.”

“Release Penny.”

“Unlock the drive.”

Serena moved unexpectedly.

She picked up a champagne bottle and struck the guard behind Penny.

Penny dropped.

Julian spun toward Serena.

“You stupid—”

Nikolai’s team breached the room.

Within seconds, the guards were disarmed.

Julian pressed the knife against Serena’s throat.

Nikolai entered last.

His voice was quiet.

“Take your hand off her.”

Julian pulled Serena backward.

“She chose me.”

Serena’s face twisted.

“No. I chose the ballroom. There’s a difference.”

She drove her heel into his foot and ducked.

Nikolai crossed the space before Julian recovered. He caught his brother by the collar and slammed him against the wall.

I moved between them.

“My condition.”

Nikolai stopped.

Again.

Julian laughed breathlessly.

“She has you trained already.”

Nikolai released him.

“No, brother. She reminds me I still have a choice.”

Serena stared at me.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I looked at the ruined gown.

“Did you know they forged my signature?”

“I knew Father was moving your shares. Mother said you had agreed.”

“Did you believe her?”

Serena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to.”

The same words Victoria had once used in another story of betrayal—though I did not know that. They were the words people chose when truth threatened comfort.

Penny recovered the drive.

Back at Nikolai’s residence, we decrypted it.

My audit revealed transfers from Hart Capital to Dante’s Lake Crown Partners. It also contained an automatic archive I had forgotten enabling.

One audio file had been recorded during a board call three months earlier.

Julian’s voice said, “Once the containers reach Nikolai’s terminals, customs will find enough weapons to remove him from succession permanently.”

Dante answered, “And if Evelyn discovers the transfers?”

Julian laughed.

“She’ll be married to me by then. Her signature will be on everything.”

The plot had never been only about stealing my shares.

Julian planned to frame Nikolai for international arms trafficking.

The first shipment was scheduled to arrive in forty-eight hours.

At the bottom of the manifest was the name of the ship.

The Alessandra.

Nikolai’s grandmother’s private vessel.
