Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN IN THE ATTIC

Karen grabbed my arm.
“Don't move.”
The footsteps above us stopped.
The house became completely silent.
Then came a slow creak.
One stair.
Then another.
Someone was coming down.
Karen reached for her phone.
I whispered—
“Call the police.”
She nodded.
We moved toward the kitchen.
The back door was ten feet away.
Then a voice came from the staircase.
“Claire?”
I froze.
I knew that voice.
Rachel.
She stepped into view.
No elegant emerald dress this time.
No makeup.
No polished smile.
She wore jeans and a dark coat.
Her face looked exhausted.
Karen immediately stepped between us.
“Stay where you are.”
Rachel raised both hands.
“I didn't come to hurt her.”
“Then why are you here?”
Rachel looked at me.
“Because I know what happened twenty years ago.”
I stared.
“You knew about my father.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the trust.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Daniel.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you come to my vow renewal?”
Rachel's eyes filled.
“I didn't know about Emma's speech.”
“You knew you were replacing her.”
“I was told it was a reading.”
“By Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“And you accepted?”
“I didn't understand.”
“You wore her flower.”
Rachel looked down at her wrist.
“I was told it was a family designation.”
“By whom?”
She hesitated.
“Daniel's mother.”
That explained one thing.
Not enough.
I stepped closer.
“Why are you really here?”
Rachel took a breath.
“Because my mother died.”
I stared.
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“I didn't know.”
“She left me something.”
Rachel reached into her bag.
A small envelope.
“She told me to give it to you if she died before speaking to you herself.”
I looked at Karen.
Then took it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My name.
Claire.
I know you have every reason to hate me.
Please don't.
I read the next paragraph.
Your father saved my life.
My eyes widened.
Rachel's mother had been an accountant for Daniel's father.
She discovered illegal transfers.
She tried to leave.
Daniel's father threatened her.
Benjamin Bennett helped her escape.
My father had saved Rachel's mother.
But why?
The letter continued.
Benjamin wanted to expose the network.
Daniel's father wanted to destroy him.
Victor Hale helped your father hide the evidence.
The money in the trust was not stolen.
It was protected.
Protected from whom?
From the men who built the network.
I looked at Rachel.
“Why did your mother never tell you?”
“She was afraid.”
“For twenty years?”
“Yes.”
“Then why now?”
“She was dying.”
Rachel wiped her eyes.
“She said she couldn't die carrying it.”
I read the next lines.
The money belongs to Claire Bennett.
Not Daniel.
Not the Hale family.
Claire.
The trust was created because Benjamin believed his daughter would eventually need a way out.
My hands shook.
Daniel had not controlled my father's trust.
He had been protecting it.
At least partially.
But why had he hidden it?
Rachel answered before I could ask.
“Because Daniel's father made him promise.”
“What promise?”
“Never to tell you about the money until the people who wanted it were gone.”
I looked at her.
“And were they?”
“No.”
“Who is still alive?”
Rachel hesitated.
Then said—
“Your uncle.”
Michael.
Again.
But this time, something felt different.
I called him.
He answered immediately.
“Claire.”
“Were you involved?”
Silence.
“With my father?”
“Yes.”
“With Daniel's father?”
Another silence.
“Michael.”
“I was.”
My eyes closed.
“Why?”
“To protect you.”
“Everyone says that.”
“I know.”
“I'm tired of hearing it.”
“I understand.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Michael sighed.
“Your father discovered that Daniel's father was using the Bennett shipping accounts to move illegal money.”
“Did my father participate?”
“At first.”
My heart sank.
“Then he tried to stop.”
“Yes.”
“That's why he was ruined.”
“Yes.”
“And the trust?”
“Was created to protect the money your father recovered.”
“How much?”
Michael gave me the number.
I sat down.
It was more than I had ever imagined.
Michael continued.
“Your father wanted you to have it.”
“Why didn't he tell me?”
“Because he believed you would become a target.”
“And Daniel?”
“Daniel was supposed to protect you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“He brought Rachel to my vow renewal.”
Michael was silent.
“That doesn't sound like protection.”
“No.”
“It sounds like betrayal.”
“I know.”
I ended the call.
Rachel looked at me.
“I am sorry.”
I stared at her.
“Did you love him?”
She swallowed.
“Yes.”
“Do you still?”
She hesitated.
“No.”
That surprised me.
“When did that change?”
“When I realized I had been in love with the memory of a man who didn't exist anymore.”
I looked at her.
She continued.
“Daniel is not the boy I knew.”
“No.”
“He became his father's son.”
I flinched.
“Maybe.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No.”
She looked directly at me.
“He is trying not to be.”
Before I could answer, headlights appeared outside.
A black SUV.
Then another.
Rachel's face went pale.
“They found us.”
“Who?”
“Michael's people.”
Karen frowned.
“Michael has people?”
Rachel nodded.
“He always has.”
The front door opened.
Three men entered.
The first was Michael.
The second was someone I had never seen.
The third was Daniel.
I stared at him.
He looked terrified.
“Claire.”
“What are you doing here?”
“I came for you.”
Michael stepped forward.
“You shouldn't have brought her.”
Daniel turned.
“You said she was safe.”
“She was.”
“Then why are men outside?”
Michael's face hardened.
“Because someone leaked the location.”
Rachel looked at me.
“The trust has been discovered.”
Daniel looked at me.
“What did you find?”
I held up my father's letter.
“Everything.”
He closed his eyes.
“Claire…”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the money.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about my father.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Rachel was connected.”
“Yes.”
“And you still brought her to our anniversary.”
His face collapsed.
“That wasn't about the trust.”
“Then what was it about?”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Then back at me.
“I thought I could finally close the chapter.”
I stared.
“You humiliated our daughter to close a chapter?”
“No.”
“You let Rachel replace Emma.”
“I know.”
“You let her wear Emma's flower.”
“I know.”
“You brought your first love to our vow renewal.”
“I know.”
He looked broken.
“I made the worst decision of my life.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“What?”
“You made a series of decisions.”
He couldn't answer.
Then a gunshot exploded outside.
Everyone ducked.
Michael shouted—
“DOWN!”
The windows shattered.
Daniel grabbed me.
Rachel screamed.
Karen pulled out her phone.
The house erupted into chaos.
Then Michael looked at me.
“The trust documents.”
“What?”
“Where are they?”
I realized.
The original documents were still upstairs.
Michael's face changed.
“If they get those, they can take everything.”
Daniel looked at the staircase.
“I'll get them.”
“No.”
I grabbed his arm.
“I'm coming.”
He stared.
“Claire.”
“You don't get to protect me by leaving me behind anymore.”
For the first time in twenty years, Daniel looked at me not as his wife.
Not as someone he needed to manage.
But as an equal.
He nodded.
May you like
“Okay.”
And together, we ran upstairs.
