Plot twist

Chapter 4 - THE SEVEN MILLION DOLLAR SECRET

The next morning, I woke up at 5:12 a.m.

For fourteen years, I had woken beside Luca.

That morning, the other side of the bed was empty.

I expected sadness.

Instead, I felt relief.

It was the first sign that my marriage had ended long before Luca brought Chloe through the front door.

I made coffee.

Opened my laptop.

And waited for Rachel's secure message.

At 5:47, it arrived.

We found the seven million.

I opened the attachment.

The money had moved through four corporations.

Vance Capital Development.

Blue Ridge Hospitality.

Caldwell Investments.

And finally, a private trust.

The beneficiary of the trust was listed as:

Evelyn Vance Family Holdings.

I stared at the screen.

Evelyn.

Luca's mother.

The woman who had spent years telling me I wasn't generous enough.

The woman who had criticized every gift I bought.

The woman who had repeatedly said that “family should take care of family.”

Seven million dollars.

I called Rachel.

She answered immediately.

“You saw it.”

“Yes.”

“Do you want the good news or bad news?”

“Good.”

“The money isn't gone.”

I closed my eyes.

“Explain.”

“Most of it is still sitting in assets.”

“What assets?”

“Properties.”

She began listing them.

A townhouse in Charlotte.

Two rental properties in Asheville.

A commercial building in Raleigh.

A vacation property in South Carolina.

And a private investment portfolio.

“All purchased in the last three years.”

“By Evelyn?”

“Through companies controlled by Evelyn.”

I leaned back.

“Then why was she always asking me for money?”

Rachel was silent for a moment.

“Because she wasn't asking for money.”

“What?”

“She was testing whether you'd keep giving it.”

I understood immediately.

Every monthly payment.

Every emergency.

Every “unexpected bill.”

Every call about the mortgage.

Every time Evelyn claimed she couldn't afford groceries while posting pictures from expensive restaurants.

It hadn't been desperation.

It had been manipulation.

“Does Luca know?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course he knew.

He had built the system.

I spent the next hour reading every document.

At 8:30, I drove to Nathan and Madison's house.

Their new waterfront home was enormous.

Too enormous.

A three-story glass structure overlooking Lake Wylie.

I had seen pictures before.

Madison had proudly posted them online.

She had called it “our forever home.”

I rang the bell.

Madison opened the door.

Her smile appeared automatically.

Then disappeared.

“Jessi.”

“Good morning.”

She looked behind me.

“Is Luca with you?”

“No.”

Her shoulders relaxed.

Then she noticed the folder in my hand.

“What do you want?”

“The truth.”

Her face tightened.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“Where did the nine hundred thousand dollars come from?”

She froze.

I watched the exact moment she realized I knew.

“I'm sorry?”

“The money used to finance this house.”

Her eyes widened.

“You're accusing us of something?”

“No.”

I walked inside.

“I'm asking.”

Nathan appeared from the hallway.

“What is she doing here?”

I looked at him.

“Do you know where the money for this house came from?”

He frowned.

“From the bank.”

“No.”

He looked at Madison.

She looked at him.

And suddenly, I knew Nathan didn't know.

That was the first surprise.

The second came when he said,

“Madison told me her father invested.”

I turned toward her.

Madison's face went pale.

“That's not true.”

Nathan stared at her.

“What?”

“I said my father helped.”

“He didn't.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Nathan looked at me.

“Jessi, what is going on?”

I placed the documents on the kitchen island.

“Your brother transferred nearly nine hundred thousand dollars into an entity connected to your restaurant.”

Nathan stared at the papers.

“No.”

“Read them.”

He did.

Madison stepped backward.

“Nathan.”

He looked up.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“When everything settled.”

Nathan's voice cracked.

“Everything settled?”

He turned toward me.

“Is this true?”

“Yes.”

He read another page.

Then another.

His face became increasingly pale.

“How much?”

“Nine hundred thousand directly connected to your business.”

He looked at Madison.

“Where did it go?”

She couldn't answer.

Nathan suddenly understood.

He sat down.

I had never seen him look so small.

The family golden boy.

The successful older brother.

The man Evelyn had spent years praising.

He looked at the papers again.

“You told me the restaurant was profitable.”

“It will be.”

“You told me the house was paid for.”

“It nearly is.”

“You told me your father gave us the down payment.”

She started crying.

“I was trying to protect us.”

Nathan stood.

“From what?”

She said nothing.

“From me?”

Still nothing.

“Or from Jessi?”

Madison looked at me.

I didn't say a word.

Nathan grabbed his phone.

“I'm calling my attorney.”

Madison reached for him.

“No.”

He pulled away.

“Don't touch me.”

The room became silent.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

It was Luca.

Nathan answered.

“What did you do?”

I watched his face change.

Luca was speaking loudly enough that I could hear fragments.

“Don't listen to her.”

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“You stole from her.”

“I borrowed it.”

“You forged her signature.”

“It was temporary.”

“You used my business.”

“It was going to make all of us money.”

Nathan laughed.

A broken, bitter sound.

“All of us?”

Luca shouted something.

Nathan ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

“I am sorry.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“Madison and I are done.”

Madison stared at him.

“You can't mean that.”

“I do.”

He walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

“Jessi.”

I looked at him.

“Thank you for telling me.”

I nodded.

“Don't thank me.”

He looked confused.

“Just fix what you can.”

I left.

But before I reached my car, my phone rang.

Rachel.

“Jessi.”

“What?”

“We found the final destination of the seven million.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

She hesitated.

“An offshore trust.”

“Whose?”

“Luca's.”

I stopped walking.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you say it was Evelyn's?”

“Because Evelyn is the public beneficiary.”

I felt cold.

“What's the actual structure?”

Rachel took a breath.

“Evelyn receives the income.”

“And Luca?”

“He controls the principal.”

I stared at the lake.

The truth was worse than I had imagined.

Luca hadn't been stealing money to support his family.

He had been building a private fortune.

A fortune that could survive our divorce.

A fortune he believed I would never find.

Rachel continued.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“The trust has a scheduled distribution tomorrow.”

“To whom?”

“To Luca.”

“How much?”

“Seven million.”

I looked toward the road.

“When?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Then we stop it.”

Rachel's voice became firm.

“We already filed the emergency injunction.”

I exhaled.

“Will it work?”

“It should.”

“Should?”

She paused.

“Unless Luca has another account.”

I looked back at the lake house.

At the windows.

At the place he had tried to steal from me.

“Then find it.”

Rachel was silent.

“We're going to.”

And that night, just before midnight, she called again.

“We found something.”

“What?”

“Luca has been planning to disappear.”

My heart stopped.

“How?”

“He bought a private plane ticket.”

“To where?”

May you like

Rachel's voice dropped.

“Switzerland.”
