Plot twist

Chapter 5 - THE HUSBAND WHO WAS SENT

The cassette continued.

My father's voice sounded older than I remembered.

Tired.

Careful.

“Julian Mercer works for people who have been trying to reach this property for years.”

I couldn't move.

Mara leaned closer to the recorder.

My father continued.

“They know I kept records.”

“They believe Claire inherited them.”

“They are wrong.”

A click.

Then silence.

The recording ended.

I stared at the machine.

“That's it?”

Mara turned it over.

“There may be another side.”

There wasn't.

But inside the battery compartment was a folded note.

My father's handwriting.

Don't trust the story. Trust the numbers.

Underneath was a sequence:

31 — 17 — 406 — 92.

Mara frowned.

“Those look like coordinates.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I knew my father.

He loved woodworking measurements.

31 inches.

17 inches.

406.

407.

We searched the shop.

Thirty-one inches from the floor.

Seventeen inches from the wall.

There was a loose floorboard.

Underneath was a steel tube.

Inside were original contracts.

The first pages showed payments from multiple companies.

Then we found something worse.

A contract bearing Julian's signature.

He had been paid before our first date.

Not after.

Before.

I felt something inside me break.

“How much?”

Mara looked.

“Twenty-five thousand.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That's what he was paid to date me?”

“No.”

She turned the page.

“There's another payment.”

“Amount?”

“Two hundred thousand.”

The date was the month before our wedding.

I sat down.

Julian had never loved me.

He had been assigned to get close to me.

To gain my trust.

To obtain the property.

To find whatever my father had hidden.

And I had spent years believing our marriage was real.

Chloe was crying.

“I didn't know about the payments until after the wedding.”

“You knew enough.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Julian threatened my son.”

I looked at her.

“Where is he?”

“My son?”

“Yes.”

“He's with my sister in Baltimore.”

“Is he safe?”

She nodded.

“For now.”

Mara immediately said, “We can arrange protection.”

Chloe looked relieved.

Then a car passed outside.

We all went silent.

It slowed.

Then continued.

Mara closed the blinds.

“We need to move the evidence.”

I looked at the contracts.

“No.”

She frowned.

“Why?”

“Because if they know we found these, they'll come after us.”

“They're already coming.”

She was right.

Then my phone rang.

This time it was the hospital.

The maternity unit had discovered something strange.

My prenatal records had been accessed again.

By Julian's attorney.

Mara's expression hardened.

“He's trying to establish that your pregnancy is unstable.”

“Why?”

“To challenge your capacity to manage the property.”

I stared at her.

“You mean they're trying to make me look incompetent.”

“Yes.”

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

They had attacked my body.

Forged my signature.

Manipulated my marriage.

Now they were trying to use my pregnancy against me.

But they had made one mistake.

They had underestimated what I would become after surviving them.

I wanted the truth.

All of it.

We took the evidence to a federal financial crimes investigator named Thomas Reed.

He listened quietly.

Then he examined the contracts.

“These are serious.”

“Can you arrest Julian?”

“Not yet.”

I hated those words.

“Why?”

“We need to establish the full financial structure.”

“So he can keep walking around?”

“Under restrictions.”

Reed looked at me.

“Your testimony about the assault is separate.”

“And the mortgage?”

“Also separate.”

He paused.

“Unless we find proof they coordinated.”

I knew they had.

But knowing wasn't enough.

We needed proof.

Then Reed found something.

A handwritten note in the ledger.

Payment confirmed after marriage.

Underneath was a bank account number.

Reed checked it.

The account belonged to a company I had never heard of.

Mercer Family Holdings.

The account had received exactly $200,000.

But the transfer originated from a company owned by Raymond Pike.

Reed looked at me.

“That's the link.”

I finally felt like someone believed me.

Then he added:

“There is one problem.”

“What?”

“The money was transferred two days before Julian proposed.”

I stared.

“So the plan started before the engagement.”

“Yes.”

“Then what was the real goal?”

Reed looked at the original contract.

There was a paragraph none of us had noticed.

A clause allowing the lender to obtain rights to any future improvements, business expansions, or inherited commercial assets associated with the property.

Mara's face changed.

“Her father's estate.”

Reed nodded.

“They weren't just after the shop.”

“They were after everything connected to it.”

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

No number.

Only a photograph.

Julian standing outside the hospital.

He was holding a copy of the forged mortgage.

And beside him stood Eleanor.

But behind them was someone else.

Raymond Pike.

And in Pike's hand was a document with one phrase clearly visible:

FORECLOSURE NOTICE.

The message beneath it said:

You have seventy-two hours.
