Plot twist

Chapter 9 - ODALYS WOKE UP AND DESTROYED SILAS WITH ONE SENTENCE

Three days after Evelyn was born, Odalys woke.

I was still in the hospital.

Evelyn was in the NICU, improving every day.

She needed help maintaining body temperature and feeding, but she breathed without a ventilator.

I spent hours beside her incubator.

My father spent almost as many.

Watching Marcus Osei place one finger through an incubator opening while armed men guarded the hallway was an image I never expected to see.

“You're terrifying everyone.”

I told him.

“Good.”

“The neonatal nurses?”

“They'll recover.”

Priya walked past.

“We're more afraid of Amara.”

Dad smiled.

“Smart.”

Silas had been denied immediate release.

His lawyers were already building a defense around coercion by Gabriel Kade.

Then Odalys woke.

She asked to see me.

I said no.

She asked again.

No.

Then she told Elena she knew who had ordered the attack in my hospital room.

That changed things.

I went.

Dad insisted on standing outside.

Odalys looked smaller.

Pale.

Bandage beneath her hospital gown.

No makeup.

No expensive coat.

No cruelty left in her expression.

Or maybe no power to support it.

“You look well.”

she whispered.

“I look like someone who gave birth three days ago after being beaten.”

She closed her eyes.

“I deserved that.”

“Stop saying what you think makes you sympathetic.”

Her eyes opened.

“I don't want sympathy.”

“What do you want?”

“To tell you the truth.”

“Try it. It'll be new.”

She accepted the insult.

“I went into your room to make you sign.”

“I know.”

“Silas gave me the key.”

“I know.”

“He told me Dr. Heller was ready.”

“I know.”

“But Silas didn't tell me to hit you.”

“I know.”

She looked surprised.

“I still did it.”

“Yes.”

“I was angry.”

“Yes.”

“I hated you.”

“I noticed.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I thought if you disappeared, he would finally choose me.”

“Did he?”

She laughed bitterly.

“No.”

Then she looked directly at me.

“He never intended to marry me.”

I felt no satisfaction.

“He intended to blame me.”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“But that's not the important part.”

“What is?”

“Silas didn't plan the hospital attack.”

“You just said—”

“Not the real attack.”

I stopped.

Odalys explained.

Silas wanted the papers signed.

He wanted me intimidated.

But someone else told her to disconnect the nurse call.

Someone else instructed her to lower the shade.

Someone else gave her the belt.

My skin went cold.

“Who?”

“Samuel.”

I stared.

“You met him?”

“Twice.”

“When?”

“The first time was six months ago.”

Before she attacked me.

Before Silas's crisis became visible.

“What did he want?”

“You afraid.”

“Why?”

“He said fear would make Marcus reveal himself.”

I stopped breathing.

The hospital attack wasn't only about Silas.

I was bait.

Samuel knew who I was.

He knew who my father was.

He manipulated Odalys and Silas into forcing Marcus out of hiding.

“What exactly did Samuel tell you?”

Odalys's eyes filled.

“He said your father had abandoned his old life for you.”

“And?”

“He wanted to see whether Marcus Osei still existed.”

My hands clenched.

The attack on me was a test.

Beat the daughter.

Watch the father emerge.

Samuel had used Silas's greed and Odalys's jealousy as tools.

“Why the baby?”

“Gabriel.”

Two separate agendas.

Samuel wanted my father.

Gabriel wanted my mother's technology and trust network.

Silas wanted money.

Odalys wanted Silas.

Four selfish desires intersecting over my body.

I stood.

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

I stopped.

Odalys whispered:

“Samuel isn't Marcus's only traitor.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

She looked toward the door.

“Your father's attorney.”

“Elena?”

“No.”

I exhaled.

“Then who?”

“His old attorney. Jonah Price.”

I didn't know the name.

Dad did.

When I told him, he went silent.

Jonah had managed legacy trusts and international corporate structures for Marcus and Evelyn decades earlier.

Including my mother's trust.

If Jonah was compromised, Gabriel might know more about Evelyn's safeguards than we realized.

We found Jonah.

Dead.

Heart attack, officially.

Six weeks earlier.

Dad didn't believe it.

Neither did I.

His files were missing.

Then the biggest twist arrived.

A letter.

Physical.

Mailed to the hospital.

Addressed to me.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph of my mother.

Young.

Pregnant with me.

Standing beside Marcus.

And Samuel.

All three smiling.

On the back:

ASK YOUR FATHER WHO REALLY CREATED THE EVELYN TRUST.

I showed Dad.

His face changed.

“Who created it?”

I asked.

He sat down.

“Samuel.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Your mother designed the terms.”

“But Samuel created the structure?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because before everything fell apart, Samuel loved her too.”

Silence.

Not romantic.

Family.

Evelyn had apparently been the one person who could calm both brothers.

When I was born, Samuel helped create the trust protecting my future children.

Then resentment poisoned him.

“So he can access it?”

“No.”

“You're sure?”

Dad hesitated.

That was becoming a family curse.

“Dad.”

“He may know where the weaknesses are.”

My blood went cold.

My daughter had been alive three days.

Already someone might be trying to penetrate the fortune intended to protect her.

Then Elena entered.

“Marcus.”

“What?”

“Someone filed a petition.”

My stomach dropped.

“For what?”

She looked at me.

“Emergency guardianship of Evelyn.”

“Silas?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Elena placed the papers in front of me.

Petitioner:

Samuel Osei.

Relationship:

Maternal great-uncle.

Basis:

Alleged criminal incapacity of Marcus Osei and mental instability of Amara Vance.

I almost laughed.

“He's trying to take my daughter through family court?”

Elena's face was grim.

“Not exactly.”

She turned the page.

Samuel had attached evidence.

Photographs.

Financial records.

Documents proving Marcus Osei's criminal history.

And one sealed affidavit supposedly written by my mother before her death.

custody should pass to Samuel.
