Plot twist

Chapter 7 - DANIEL LOST CONTROL THE MOMENT OTHER MEN STOPPED AGREEING WITH HIM

Daniel had always been comfortable arguing with me.

He was less comfortable when people outside our marriage told him no.

His attorney told him to stop contacting Apex.

Apex counsel told him to stop contacting clients.

The protective-order court reminded him indirect harassment could have consequences.

His employer became involved when a company laptop was used to draft one of the emails about my alleged instability.

That was not good.

Did they fire him immediately?

No.

They investigated.

Daniel claimed personal email accidentally accessed from work device.

Possible.

Then discovered he had also researched Lakeshore executive contact information using company databases intended for business development.

His employer did not appreciate their tools being used to interfere with another company’s employee.

He received suspension pending review.

When I learned, my first feeling was satisfaction.

Then fear.

If Daniel lost job, would he become more dangerous?

I told Julia.

She agreed we should treat risk seriously without inventing.

Safety plan.

Home security.

Locks changed where legally allowed after occupancy order.

Exterior cameras.

No secret surveillance.

Melissa had code.

Work security.

Police contact.

Not because I needed fortress forever.

Because transition was high risk.

Then Daniel’s employer terminated him.

Not for shaving my head.

They were not court.

For misuse of company systems, policy violations, and dishonesty during internal review.

Consequences.

He blamed me.

Of course.

Through lawyer:

Mr. Hayes believes Rebecca’s employer weaponized private marital conflict to damage his career.

Julia replied:

Apex is not his employer.

Correct.

Then Eleanor posted:

Now my son has lost his job because powerful corporate people are punishing him for trying to save his marriage.

Nobody from my side responded.

Good.

Then Daniel requested reconsideration of temporary support due unemployment.

Julia argued unemployment resulted from his own misconduct and he remained employable.

Court ordered him to seek work and did not make me his immediate income replacement. Maybe limited contribution? Keep simple.

Then settlement negotiations.

Daniel demanded:

Half the house equity.

Five years maintenance.

Continue car payment until refinance.

Half my bonus.

$40,000 attorney fees.

Aggressive opening.

Not final.

I laughed when Julia read.

“Is this normal?”

“Opening positions can be aspirational.”

“Aspirational?”

“That is polite.”

We countered based on traced property.

Pre-marital house value.

Marital appreciation.

Retirement accumulated during marriage.

His accounts.

Mine.

House.

I was willing to pay him fair share of marital equity to keep property.

Why keep?

At first I wanted sell.

Then I realized Daniel had already taken one thing from my sense of home.

I did not want his behavior deciding whether I could stay.

But I also did not need symbolic battle.

We got appraisal.

If economics reasonable, keep.

If not, sell.

Choice.

Then his attorney raised my bonus.

The promotion bonus earned during marriage? Timing.

Some marital.

Fine.

No hiding.

I did not want become what they accused.

Then criminal case.

Daniel eventually entered plea to reduced domestic-battery-related charge? Need grounded. Let's say after negotiation he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor offense based on unlawful physical restraint/contact, accepted probation, counseling/intervention, and extended protective conditions. He did not admit every statement, but admitted he restrained me and cut hair without permission. Good.

At hearing, judge asked:

“Did she consent before you used clippers?”

Daniel looked down.

“No.”

That one word mattered.

Not to me entirely—I knew.

But public record.

Then:

“Did you believe you were entitled because she was your wife?”

His attorney objected maybe not needed. Let's avoid.

He admitted conduct.

No jail? Maybe brief? Could be probation and mandated batterer intervention, fines. Grounded. If prior no record, likely.

People online if story viral might want more, but this is fiction no need.

Eleanor sat behind him.

Cried.

I did not attend? I could via counsel. I chose not to avoid. Julia told. Better.

Then Daniel sent apology through attorney as part of resolution? No contact allowed, but written could be forwarded if I consent. I said no.

Not yet.

Then work contract.

Monday.

Lakeshore signed.

$12.8 million.

My largest deal.

Monica opened champagne at office.

I stood surrounded by team.

Tasha raised glass:

“To Rebecca.”

I almost cried.

Then Mark:

“To the woman who deleted slide fourteen before it killed us.”

Laughter.

No one mentioned Daniel.

That was the victory.

Not because work replaced pain.

Because pain did not take work.

Then company announced performance bonus.

I looked at number.

Enough to pay most divorce settlement if necessary.

I almost laughed at timing.

Then Daniel found new job interview.

Good.

I wanted him employed.

Not because support.

Because stability.

He got job at smaller facilities-management company.

Lower salary.

No management.

Fine.

Then his financial demands softened.

Reality.

Settlement talks moved.

But Eleanor became more aggressive.

She had been living in a condo she owned.

Not our house.

Source says she stood in bedroom, implying living with them maybe "down the hall". So yes, Eleanor lived in our home.

Important! I had forgotten. She slept down hall. She was occupant maybe guest, not owner. Temporary order forced Daniel out; what about Eleanor? She remained? I left then returned. Need resolve. Let's say after temporary order, Eleanor voluntarily went to her condo? But source "down the hall" suggests perhaps staying long-term. Let's establish she owned a condo but had been staying with them “temporarily” for 14 months. We can incorporate now.

Eleanor had returned to her condo after Daniel was removed.

The condo still existed but she rented? Let's say small condo. Fine.

Her prescription support ended after 30 days.

She discovered Medicare supplement etc. Daniel had to help.

Then she sent invoice? Maybe.

One certified letter:

You owe me $8,400 for household contributions I made while living with you.

What contributions?

Cooking.

Cleaning.

“Emotional labor.”

Furniture purchase.

She threatened small claims/civil.

Julia laughed? Professional.

No contract.

Maybe some furniture she bought could be retrieved.

We arranged.

Eleanor collected a china cabinet and recliner.

No cash.

She left.

Then police identified clippers package sender.

Shipping-store camera recovered after all? Let's not. Could be prepaid number Daniel. Better not leave unresolved. We can resolve via receipt found in Eleanor bank statement during discovery? Her texts to Daniel:

I sent her reminder.

Daniel:

What?

Eleanor:

Something that buzzes.

There.

Date package.

Wow.

No ambiguity.

That could create harassment charge or protective order against Eleanor. Let's do.

During Daniel device extraction for criminal case, messages surfaced.

Eleanor:

I mailed her a reminder.

Daniel:

Mom, stop.

Interesting Daniel told stop.

Eleanor:

She deserves to remember.

Daniel:

Lawyer said no contact.

Eleanor:

I’m not contacting. The package is anonymous.

There.

Eleanor acted independently.

Daniel not complicit in package.

Nuance.

Law enforcement investigated.

She admitted mailing clippers as “message.”

A separate harassment case / order.

No jail maybe warning/charge. Evelyn sought civil no-contact order against Eleanor too.

Granted based evidence.

Now both.

Then something unexpected.

Daniel, through attorney, said he would not oppose order against his mother.

Eleanor found out.

She exploded.

Posted:

My own son has abandoned me for woman destroying him.

Family cracks.

Interesting.

Then Daniel’s attorney relayed he wanted to separate his conduct from Eleanor’s.

Could be self-serving.

Maybe first sign accountability.

But not redemption yet.

Then one message from Daniel to his brother surfaced after plea:

I thought Mom was helping me save marriage. Now I can see we were feeding each other’s worst instincts.

That is better.

But user wants drama. We can end chapter with Eleanor turning on Daniel maybe revealing a hidden voicemail? Maybe.

One day Julia gets call from Daniel's counsel:

There is a document Daniel believes Rebecca should see before settlement.

A resignation letter.

Drafted before the shaving.

Already typed in my name.

To Monica.

Subject: RESIGNATION — EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

Daniel and Eleanor had prepared it the night before.

May you like

They had planned to send it from my laptop after shaving me.

That raises stakes. Great cliffhanger.
