Chapter 14 - THE BLACKWOOD NAME DISAPPEARED FROM THE COMPANY TOWER, BUT I DISCOVERED I NO LONGER NEEDED TO SEE IT FALL

Twelve years after basement, the Blackwood name came off headquarters.
Not because bankruptcy.
Merger.
Blackwood Consolidated had spent years under independent leadership.
Family stake diluted.
Eventually acquired by a global infrastructure group.
New name.
Workers remained.
Some offices changed.
The giant BLACKWOOD letters were removed.
Someone sent photo.
Harrison.
Caption:
Erased.
I stared.
Then called.
“You’re twelve years late.”
“Still satisfying.”
“Not really.”
He sounded disappointed.
“Who are you?”
I laughed.
The word from basement had haunted.
I want them erased.
At the time, I meant rage.
I wanted every Blackwood trembling.
I wanted name gone.
Power gone.
Pain mirrored.
But life changed.
Julian served sentence.
Margaret died.
Edmund apologized and later stepped away.
Khloe lost stolen narrative and money tied to it.
Company survived then changed owners.
Penny grew.
I remarried.
What more would destruction give?
Nothing.
So I deleted photo.
Not memory.
Just headline.
That year Edmund became seriously ill.
Penny asked me to visit him.
I hesitated.
Then yes.
Hospital.
He was frail.
He looked at me.
“Sloan.”
“Edmund.”
Daniel waited outside.
Penny sat beside grandfather.
Edmund said:
“I’m glad you came.”
“I came for Penny.”
“I know.”
Accuracy.
Later alone few minutes, he asked:
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
“Should.”
“I don’t organize emotions around should.”
He smiled weakly.
“I was coward.”
“Yes.”
“I thought preserving family meant keeping scandal private.”
“Yes.”
“I almost cost granddaughter her mother.”
“Yes.”
Tears.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“Forgive?”
I thought.
“I don’t carry you anymore.”
He looked confused.
“That is closest answer.”
He nodded.
Edmund died weeks later.
Penny mourned deeply.
I comforted.
No resentment.
At funeral, I attended for her.
Some Blackwood relatives stared.
I wore jade necklace.
Not statement.
Penny asked me to.
Julian could not attend due incarceration restrictions perhaps. He received notice.
Margaret already gone.
The dynasty gathered.
No hostility.
Time.
A cousin whispered:
“I’m sorry for what family did.”
I said:
“Thank you.”
No need speech.
After funeral, Penny visited old estate.
The basement had been renovated after sale? Estate sold maybe. Current owner allowed? Better no. She didn't need.
She asked:
“Do you ever want go back?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Nothing there I need.”
She nodded.
We drove away.
Julian’s release hearing approached in a few years? Depending sentence maybe he served substantial 12 years. Could be eligible after around 12. Court/parole process.
He was approved for supervised release after serving sentence portion, with conditions, years later. We need happy but safe. Let's say after 14 years he was released under supervision.
Before release, victim liaison contacted.
Safety plan.
Protective order? Extended if needed.
I said no direct contact.
He complied.
Penny, adult, chose see him in neutral spaces.
He moved small apartment far from us.
Lost medical/business career? He wasn't doctor; businessman. He worked remotely for nonprofit reentry finance maybe later. But no redemption needed.
He did not return to wealth control.
Some trust assets remained.
He lived modestly by prior standards.
One day Penny asked if I would meet him once.
My instinct no.
Then:
“Why?”
“She wants him to apologize face-to-face?” Actually Penny wants closure perhaps.
“He asked nothing.”
“She said she wants both parents in same room for graduation? Already. Maybe her wedding upcoming. She is engaged perhaps.
Penny at 25 announces engagement.
Her partner, Ethan? Let's say Maya? Penny is daughter and could have fiancé Ryan. We can create.
She wants Julian at wedding.
And me.
This becomes tension.
“Can Dad come?”
My body reacted.
Penny saw.
“You can say no to being near him.”
“This is your wedding.”
“That is not answer.”
I thought.
Safety assessment.
Julian complied for years.
No contact violations.
Therapy.
Adult daughter relationship.
Venue security.
I said:
“Yes, if conditions.”
Penny cried.
At wedding, Julian sat rear? Family row but separate.
Daniel beside me.
No confrontation.
Julian approached only after asking Penny to ask me? Better he doesn't.
At reception, I crossed room and saw him.
He stopped.
We looked.
Older.
No Blackwood power.
He nodded.
“Sloan.”
“Julian.”
That was all.
I moved.
My nervous system stayed calm.
Victory.
Not forgiveness.
Safety.
Penny married man she loved.
In vows:
“I promise never to confuse love with ownership.”
I almost laughed/cry.
Our history transformed into lesson without controlling her.
At reception Harrison danced badly.
Daniel mocked.
I danced with Penny.
Julian watched from distance.
Fine.
The Blackwood letters were gone from tower.
May you like
But I no longer needed symbols falling.
The real ending had occurred years earlier when I stopped needing them to fall for me to stand.
