Plot twist

Chapter 9 - SOPHIE ASKED WHICH MOTHER SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO LOVE MORE

Sophie was five when the question came.

We were at a park.

Elena pushed Noah? No twins don't exist. Wrong story. Sophie only child. Need keep.

Sophie was on swing.

Elena and Alessandra sat on bench.

I stood nearby with coffee.

Sophie jumped off swing and walked directly toward all of us.

“Question.”

Elena smiled.

“Okay.”

“Which mommy do I love more?”

Everything stopped.

Alessandra’s face went pale.

Elena blinked.

“Why do you ask?”

“At school, Mia says you only get one real mom.”

There it was.

Children inherit other families’ definitions through playground.

Elena crouched.

“What do you think?”

Sophie frowned.

“You’re Mommy.”

She pointed.

“Allie is Mama Allie.”

“Yes.”

“But Mia says belly mom is real.”

Alessandra’s eyes filled.

She said:

“Elena is real.”

Immediate.

Sophie looked.

“But you grew me.”

“Yes.”

“That’s real too.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

Alessandra smiled through tears.

“So maybe Mia has a family with one mom.”

“You have family with two.”

“Different is not fake.”

Sophie considered.

Then:

“Do I have to love same amount?”

“No,” Elena said.

“Love is not math.”

I looked away because something about that sentence hit too hard.

Sophie nodded.

“Good.”

Then ran back to swing.

Crisis solved.

Adults sat destroyed.

Alessandra laughed.

“I spent weeks terrified of that question.”

Elena smiled.

“And she answered herself.”

Children.

I learned.

Family therapy continued.

Alessandra eventually moved into her own apartment near Elena.

She returned to work slowly.

Not journalism.

Too triggering.

She began archival research for a nonprofit documenting trafficking cases and wrongful identity records.

Julian’s work lived through hers without becoming her entire life.

She dated no one.

No pressure.

Recovery was enough.

Elena’s relationship with me became public unintentionally.

A photographer caught us leaving restaurant.

Headline:

MORETTI BOSS DATING FORMER HOUSEKEEPER WHO HID SISTER’S TAPE

I hated wording.

Elena laughed.

“Former housekeeper is true.”

“You’re executive director now.”

She had launched the Bellini Family Safety Initiative, initially funded through compensation from Mateo’s wrongful-death settlement and grants from survivor organizations.

It helped domestic workers and low-wage employees report coercion, employer threats, and unsafe housing without losing legal support.

I offered money once.

She said:

“Apply through board.”

I did.

Rejected first year due conflict-of-interest concerns.

I was offended.

Elena delighted.

Second year, independent foundation grant approved capped amount.

Progress.

The press liked Cinderella framing.

Mafia boss and maid.

I hated.

Elena hated more.

At one event, reporter asked:

“How did it feel when Mr. Moretti finally noticed you?”

Elena smiled.

“He noticed me when I accused his family lawyer of threatening my husband.”

Reporter went quiet.

Then:

“But romantically?”

“I don’t measure my worth by when wealthy men become attracted to me.”

Good.

I stood ten feet away feeling proud and appropriately useless.

Our relationship moved slowly.

No moving in.

No financial entanglement.

I visited her townhouse.

She visited my new residence.

I sold estate.

Not immediately.

Too much history.

Too large.

Part became evidence archive temporarily.

Eventually property sold to private educational foundation; proceeds used partly for legal restitution and victim compensation per settlements.

I bought smaller home.

Still large by normal standards.

Elena called it “billionaire downsizing theater.”

Fair.

Then Sophie asked me:

“Are you marrying Mommy?”

Elena choked on tea.

I said:

“No plan.”

“Do you love?”

I looked at Elena.

She looked at me.

“Yes.”

Sophie smiled.

“Then plan.”

Children.

No.

Elena said:

“Marriage is adult decision.”

“Why?”

“Because paperwork.”

Sophie groaned.

“Boring.”

Correct.

Then she looked at me.

“If you marry Mommy, are you Dad?”

I froze.

Elena did too.

Sophie’s biological father Julian was dead.

Mateo had acted as father in infancy.

I was her biological uncle.

Marriage would make me stepfather socially? Weird but possible.

I answered carefully.

“I’m already your uncle.”

“Yes.”

“Do you want another name?”

She thought.

“No.”

“Then Uncle Luca works.”

“Okay.”

Good.

No title acquisition.

At six, Sophie asked to visit Julian’s grave again.

We went with Alessandra and Elena.

She brought two flowers.

One for Julian.

One for Mateo.

“Both dads?”

she asked.

Elena’s eyes filled.

“Both loved you.”

“Yes.”

“Uncle Luca loves me?”

“Yes,” I said.

She smiled.

“Three.”

No competition.

Good.

Then Alessandra received final civil settlement from Northshore facility and corrupt guardianship parties.

Enough money to make her financially independent.

She could have left.

Instead she stayed near Sophie.

Not because forced.

Choice.

One evening, she and I sat on my porch.

“Do you hate me?”

I asked.

She laughed softly.

“What?”

“For believing you died.”

“No.”

“For becoming exactly man Marco knew I would.”

Her face softened.

“A little.”

Fair.

“I was angry for years.”

“At me?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you come back?”

“I was scared.”

“Of me.”

“Yes.”

That hurt less now.

She continued.

“But you were twenty-seven when I vanished.”

“Dad had just put half operations on your shoulders.”

“You thought control was love.”

“None of us knew how to tell truth without staging a funeral.”

Dark.

Accurate.

“Do you forgive?”

I asked.

She looked at city lights.

“Some.”

“Enough.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

I groaned.

“Family curse.”

Then she leaned shoulder against mine.

Little sister again.

No dramatic reconciliation.

No eight years restored.

Time was gone.

That was the consequence no conviction repaired.

We built new years.

Different.

May you like

Then Elena’s health? No, fine. Maybe new threat? Need chapter 10 drama. Could involve corrupt judge implicated using custody petition to seize Sophie? But Marco convicted. Perhaps reveal father Salvatore's involvement more. Maybe Sophie’s trust from Alessandra? No. We need sustain drama. Could be lawsuit over Moretti family shares or old guard tries to install Sophie as symbolic heiress. Good. Family council petitions to recognize Sophie as sole heir to Alessandra’s trust and pull her into Moretti dynasty. Luca fights. He wants break cycle.

Let's continue final with that.
