Chapter 9 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE EMPIRE

The voice echoed off the corrugated metal walls like thunder.

Grant froze mid-motion, the pen slipping from his fingers and clattering against the concrete floor. Julian spun around so fast he nearly tripped over his own Italian leather shoes.

From behind the industrial shelving unit, Roman stepped out into the harsh halogen light.

His dark overcoat was stained with mud from the drainage tunnel, his eyes locked onto Grant with a look of such concentrated, murderous hatred that even the armed mercenaries standing near the perimeter doors instinctively took a step back.

“Roman...” Grant stammered, his face instantly losing all its arrogant color, turning the shade of spoiled milk. “How... how are you alive? The hit squad—”

“Your hit squad was incompetent,” Roman said coldly, his voice cutting through the massive space like a razor. “Just like you, Grant. You always relied on hired guns to do your dirty work because you never had the stomach for a real fight.”

Grant panicked, his eyes darting frantically toward his mercenaries. “Kill him! What are you waiting for? Shoot him!”

The mercenaries raised their weapons, but before their fingers could squeeze the triggers, a burst of automatic gunfire erupted from the upper gantry cranes.

Rat-tat-tat-tat!

Marco, positioned on the catwalk above, rained suppressive fire down around the mercenaries’ feet, shattering concrete and sending them scrambling for cover behind shipping crates.

“Drop your weapons or the next rounds go through your skulls!” Marco roared from above.

The mercenaries looked at each other, weighed their loyalty to Grant against their survival, and dropped their weapons to the floor, raising their hands.

Julian Vance backed away slowly, reaching frantically into his breast pocket for a hidden pistol.

I stepped out from behind the shelving unit, raising my backup pistol, and aimed it squarely at Julian’s chest.

“Don't even think about it, Julian,” I said, my voice ice-cold. “I know you have the offshore routing codes in that pocket. Make one move, and I’ll put a hole right through your ledger.”

Julian froze, his hand hovering over his pocket, sweat pouring down his forehead.

Roman walked past Julian without even glancing at him, heading straight for the wooden chair where Isabella was tied. With a single fluid motion of his combat knife, Roman sliced through the ropes binding his sister, catching her as she slumped forward into his arms.

“I’ve got you, Bella,” Roman whispered, his rough voice cracking with emotion as he held her tight. “You’re safe now.”

“I knew you’d come, big brother,” Isabella sobbed into his shoulder.

Roman gently handed her over to Marco, who had descended from the catwalk to secure the hostages. Then, Roman turned around, his slow, deliberate footsteps echoing across the concrete as he walked toward my brother.

Grant cowered backward until his spine hit a stack of steel crates. He slid down, his hands trembling violently.

“Roman... please,” Grant whimpered, looking up like a cornered rat. “We’re family now! Look at Evelyn—she’s your wife! We can share the empire! We can—!”

Roman grabbed Grant by the lapels of his expensive tuxedo, hauling him up effortlessly to his feet, and slammed him against the steel crates with enough force to rattle the entire stack.

“You traded your own sister like cattle,” Roman whispered, his face inches from Grant’s. “You beat her, you abused her, and then you tried to murder her just to hide your own cowardice.”

“She’s a liar!” Grant choked out, struggling weakly against Roman’s grip. “She’s lying to you!”

“She told me the truth about everything,” Roman said.

He didn't hit him with his fist. Instead, Roman pulled out his heavy combat knife and drove the blade deep into the wooden crate right beside Grant’s ear, slicing a stray lock of hair off his head.

Grant shrieked, wetting himself in pure, unadulterated terror.

“The Mercer empire is gone, Grant,” Roman stated, his voice a final sentence. “Your accounts are frozen, your assets are seized by the federal authorities via the evidence Julian’s flash drive provided, and your name is scrubbed from every shipping registry in New York.”

Roman let go, dropping Grant into the dirt like a piece of garbage.

Grant curled into a fetal position, sobbing hysterically.

Three hours later, the federal marshals had cleared Pier 42. Grant and Julian were locked in the back of a secure transport van, headed toward a federal penitentiary where neither of them would ever see sunlight again. Isabella was safely reunited with her Parisian security detail, flying back under heavy guard.

The sun broke over the New York harbor, casting a brilliant, golden light across the water.

I stood on the edge of the pier, the cold morning wind whipping my hair around my face. My wedding dress was ruined—stained with mud, torn at the hem—and my body ached from the bruises of the night.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

An oversized, heavy black overcoat settled gently over my shoulders, wrapping me in warmth and the faint scent of cedar and gunpowder.

I turned around.

Roman stood there, looking down at me. The terrifying mob boss was gone, leaving only a man whose eyes held a quiet, unshakable depth.

“You’re shivering,” Roman said softly.

“I’m fine,” I replied, pulling the coat tighter around myself.

“Your brother is gone, Evelyn,” Roman said, his voice steady. “The man who hurt you will never lay a hand on you again. You are free.”

I looked up into his eyes, realizing for the first time that the cage I had traded for my wedding day wasn't a prison at all. It was a shield.

“I was never afraid of the war, Roman,” I whispered, taking a step closer to him. “I was just tired of fighting alone.”

Roman reached out, his warm calloused hand gently cupping my cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray tear I hadn't realized I’d shed.

May you like

“You’re never fighting alone again,” Roman promised.

And as he pulled me gently against his chest, standing together in the golden light of a new dawn, I knew the shadows of Westchester were finally, truly behind us.
