Plot twist

Chapter 6 - THE POWER MY BROTHER GAVE ME

Jake stared at the account.

“I don't understand.”

Daniel explained carefully.

“Your grandfather created separate protections for both of you.”

“Why?”

“Because he didn't trust your parents to treat you equally.”

Jake looked at Dad.

Dad said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“Emily receives voting authority after a qualifying military injury.”

“Jake receives financial veto authority over protected assets.”

Jake frowned.

“So what does that mean?”

“It means certain family assets cannot be transferred without both siblings' approval.”

I looked at him.

“You can block Dad.”

“Apparently.”

My father stood.

“This was never supposed to happen.”

I looked at him.

“Neither was my surgery.”

He went quiet.

Jake stared at the numbers.

“I don't want any of this.”

I understood.

He was twenty.

He wanted to work on cars.

Open a garage.

Live a normal life.

Not sit in a corporate office and fight our parents.

I reached over and squeezed his hand.

“You don't have to become someone you're not.”

He looked at me.

“Then what do I do?”

“Choose what you want to protect.”

He nodded slowly.

Then he turned toward Dad.

“I want Emily's treatment fully paid.”

“It's already paid.”

“No.”

Jake shook his head.

“I want every military medical expense she has from now on covered through the family trust.”

My father's face tightened.

“The trust doesn't work that way.”

Daniel opened the document.

“It does.”

Jake looked at him.

“Then do it.”

The room fell silent.

For the first time, my little brother had made a decision my father couldn't overrule.

And I realized why Grandpa had given him that power.

Jake had something none of us had.

He wasn't obsessed with controlling the company.

He just wanted his sister safe.

That made him difficult to manipulate.

Then the audit began.

Within days, Daniel found dozens of questionable transactions.

Personal travel.

Luxury purchases.

Payments to relatives.

Consulting fees that were never supported by work.

The yacht.

The medical spending.

The contingency reserve.

Everything led back to the same pattern.

My father had spent years treating Carter Holdings like a private account.

Not because he was a monster.

Because he had convinced himself that keeping the business in the family justified anything.

Mom eventually admitted that she knew.

Madison admitted she suspected.

Jake had been the only one who truly didn't.

And that made the betrayal hurt even more.

Then we found something bigger.

A second company.

Carter Legacy Partners.

It owned property.

Warehouses.

Commercial buildings.

And a controlling interest in the yacht dealership that had sold Madison her boat.

I stared at the records.

“Why would Dad own the yacht dealership?”

Daniel shook his head.

“He doesn't.”

“Then who?”

He zoomed in.

The registered owner was my grandfather's estate.

“That can't be right.”

Jake looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

“It means the yacht wasn't bought.”

I frowned.

“What?”

Daniel pointed to the transaction.

“Your family transferred $150,000 to the dealership.”

“And?”

“The dealership returned $150,000 through a separate entity.”

I stared.

“So Madison's yacht cost…”

“Possibly nothing.”

The room went silent.

My father closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

“What did you do?”

He whispered:

“We used the yacht transaction to move money.”

“Where?”

“Into Legacy Partners.”

“Why?”

“To protect company assets.”

“From whom?”

He didn't answer.

Daniel did.

“From a creditor.”

I frowned.

“Which creditor?”

Daniel showed me the file.

A federal lien.

Carter Holdings had been under financial pressure for years.

My father had moved assets into Legacy Partners to keep them outside the reach of creditors.

That explained the secrecy.

It didn't excuse using my medical reserve.

Then Madison spoke.

“So the yacht was never really mine.”

Dad looked at her.

“It was always meant to be temporary.”

She stared.

“My name is on it.”

“Yes.”

“But you were using it as a shell.”

She looked hurt.

I suddenly understood why she had been so angry when I questioned her.

She believed the yacht proved she mattered.

In reality, she had been another piece on the board.

She looked at me.

“I was proud of it.”

“I know.”

“I thought Dad gave me something because he loved me.”

I reached across the table.

“He does love you.”

She shook her head.

“Then why did he hurt you?”

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel received an email.

He read it.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“The creditor isn't the biggest problem.”

“Then what is?”

He turned the screen.

A federal investigation had begun.

Someone had anonymously submitted the entire Carter financial archive.

Including the trust.

The transfers.

The yacht.

The contingency reserve.

And one document none of us had ever seen.

A handwritten note from Grandpa.

If Richard ever uses Emily's medical reserve, activate the final clause.

Jake looked at me.

“What final clause?”

Daniel's face went pale.

“The final clause gives Emily complete control of Carter Holdings.”

My father whispered:

May you like

“No.”
