Chapter 4 - THE SECOND TRUST

The phrase “second trust account” followed me into sleep.
Or at least what passed for sleep that night.
At 3:17 a.m., I was still staring at the ceiling.
At 3:18, my phone vibrated.
Daniel.
Call me. Urgent.
I stepped into the hallway before answering.
“What happened?”
“I found something.”
“The second trust?”
“Yes.”
My heart began pounding.
“Where?”
“In Hannah's estate records.”
“How did we miss it?”
“Because it wasn't listed under Hannah's name.”
I waited.
“It was established by her grandmother.”
I leaned against the wall.
“What does it hold?”
Daniel paused.
“Approximately eleven million dollars.”
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
“Eleven million?”
“Yes.”
“What kind of account?”
“Investment trust.”
“Who controls it?”
“You do.”
My stomach tightened.
“And Lily?”
“She's the sole beneficiary.”
“Then why would Sarah want me removed?”
“Because whoever controls the trust controls the investments.”
I looked toward the bedroom.
Sarah was asleep.
Or pretending to be.
“Can Sarah access it?”
“Not legally.”
“What if I were removed?”
“The court could appoint someone else.”
“Someone like Sarah?”
“Yes.”
I understood.
The beach house had never been the main target.
It was only the visible piece.
The eleven million dollars was the real prize.
Sarah and Julian weren't trying to take a house.
They were trying to take Lily's future.
And they were using my daughter as the weapon.
I called Daniel back.
“What do we do?”
“We secure the account.”
“How?”
“I already contacted the trustee.”
“Who is the trustee?”
“An institution in Boston.”
“Can they freeze it?”
“Temporarily.”
“Do it.”
“Already done.”
I exhaled.
Then Daniel said,
“There is one problem.”
“Of course.”
“The trust allows the trustee to distribute certain funds for Lily's education and medical care.”
“So?”
“Someone has been making requests.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
“Sarah.”
I stared into the darkness.
“What kind of requests?”
“Medical expenses.”
I almost laughed.
“She's been claiming Lily has medical problems?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Thirty-seven thousand dollars.”
“For what?”
“Specialist appointments. Behavioral treatment. Medication.”
I closed my eyes.
“She manufactured the symptoms.”
“Yes.”
“And then billed the trust for treating them.”
Daniel was silent.
“She created the problem and profited from the solution.”
“That appears to be what happened.”
I stood there for several seconds.
Then I asked,
“Can we prove it?”
“Yes.”
“Then let's do it.”
The next morning, I met with investigators.
They examined the recordings.
The juice.
The financial transfers.
The trust requests.
The fake amendment.
Everything connected.
But there was still one missing piece.
Why Julian?
Why would a disgraced financial consultant risk everything for Sarah?
The answer came from an unexpected source.
Evelyn.
She arrived at my house that afternoon.
She looked exhausted.
“Marcus.”
“What happened?”
She sat down.
“Julian came to me.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“What did he want?”
“He asked about Hannah.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did you tell him?”
“Nothing.”
She looked at me.
“I didn't trust him.”
“Why?”
“He knew things about Hannah that only family should know.”
“What things?”
“He knew about the trust.”
I stared at her.
“Who told him?”
“I don't know.”
I thought about Peter Whitmore.
“Hannah's uncle?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Peter had been asking questions for years.”
“Is he still alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Florida.”
I called Daniel.
“Find Peter.”
Two days later, we learned that Peter had recently transferred a large sum of money to Julian.
The amount was $400,000.
Suddenly, the conspiracy became much larger.
Sarah was the inside person.
Julian was the financial operator.
Peter was the source of information.
And the money was coming from somewhere.
We traced it.
It came from an investment company.
That company had recently received funds from an offshore account.
The same offshore account Julian had used years earlier.
Everything was connected.
But Sarah still didn't know we had uncovered it.
So we let her believe she was winning.
I continued living in the house.
I went to work.
I acted normal.
I kissed her goodbye.
I asked about her day.
I pretended to believe her excuses.
Every night, she made calls.
Every night, the hidden camera recorded them.
Then, on Friday, I heard something that changed everything.
Sarah was speaking to Julian.
“They moved the money.”
Julian answered.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“You need to find out.”
“I can't.”
“You have access.”
“Marcus changed the passwords.”
“Then get them.”
“I don't know how.”
Julian became angry.
“You told me you could control him.”
Sarah's voice broke.
“I thought I could.”
“Then use Lily.”
Silence.
Sarah whispered,
“What do you mean?”
“You know what I mean.”
“No.”
“Get the child to say something.”
“She won't.”
“Then make her.”
Sarah was silent.
Julian continued.
“If Marcus believes Lily is afraid of him, the custody petition becomes stronger.”
I felt sick.
The plan was escalating.
I called Daniel.
“We need to act now.”
He agreed.
But before we could execute the plan, Sarah did something unexpected.
She took Lily.
Not from school.
Not from the house.
From Evelyn's home.
Evelyn called me screaming.
“She came here.”
“When?”
“Twenty minutes ago.”
“What happened?”
“She said you were having a breakdown.”
My blood froze.
“Where is Lily?”
“She took her.”
I grabbed my keys.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
Then Evelyn started crying.
“She showed me papers.”
“What papers?”
“A temporary guardianship order.”
My heart stopped.
“That isn't possible.”
“She said you signed them.”
“I didn't.”
“I know.”
“Then where is Lily?”
“I don't know.”
I ran outside.
My phone rang.
Sarah.
I answered.
“Where is my daughter?”
Her voice was calm.
“Safe.”
“Put her on.”
“She doesn't want to talk to you.”
“Sarah.”
“She told me she's scared of you.”
I felt something break inside me.
“Let me speak to her.”
“No.”
“What do you want?”
She paused.
Then said,
“I want you to sign the trust amendment.”
I closed my eyes.
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere safe.”
“Sarah.”
“If you don't sign, the court gets the videos.”
“What videos?”
“You'll see.”
She ended the call.
I stood in the driveway.
Then my phone received a video.
It showed Lily sitting on a couch.
Crying.
A voice behind the camera asked,
“Do you feel safe with Daddy?”
Lily nodded.
Then another question.
“Did Daddy ever hurt you?”
Lily shook her head.
The video cut.
A second clip appeared.
Lily looked frightened.
“Do you think Daddy is dangerous?”
She shook her head again.
Then the video ended.
I stared at the screen.
The recordings weren't proving what Sarah wanted.
They were proving the opposite.
Lily didn't accuse me.
She protected me.
And that meant Sarah had another plan.
Daniel called.
“Marcus.”
“Yes?”
“The guardianship order is fake.”
I closed my eyes.
“Then find my daughter.”
“We're working on it.”
I looked at the video again.
There was something in the background.
A window.
Beyond it, water.
And a red lighthouse.
I recognized it.
The old marina near the beach house.
I grabbed my keys.
“Daniel.”
May you like
“What?”
“I know where they are.”
