Plot twist

PART 2 – No One Was Leaving

Don’t let anyone leave!

Daniel’s voice thundered across the garden with a force I had never heard before.

He was usually calm.

Patient.

The kind of man who apologized when someone else bumped into him.

But as he knelt beside me on the wet stone patio, one arm wrapped around my shoulders while blood and pool water soaked through his shirt, something inside him snapped.

Every guest froze.

My mother instinctively stepped backward.

My father glanced toward the front gate.

Daniel looked directly at him.

“If anyone walks away before the police arrive,” he said, “they'll be admitting they have something to hide.”

The silence that followed was deafening.

I drifted in and out of consciousness.

Voices blurred together.

Someone pressed towels against my stomach.

Someone else kept repeating my name.

“Mariana… stay with us.”

I wanted to answer.

I couldn't.

Everything hurt.

Then I heard a stranger's voice.

“She's eight months pregnant!”

Another voice shouted,

“Where's the ambulance?”

My vision faded again.

The next clear memory I had was bright white lights.

The smell of antiseptic.

Machines beeping beside me.

I slowly opened my eyes.

A nurse immediately leaned over.

“Mariana?”

I blinked.

“My... baby?”

The nurse squeezed my hand.

“The doctors are still working.”

Fear shot through me harder than the pain.

I tried to sit up.

She gently stopped me.

“Please don't move.”

“Where's Daniel?”

“He's speaking with the surgeon.”

Surgeon.

The word made my heart stop.

Minutes later, Daniel rushed into the recovery room.

His eyes were red.

His hair was soaked from the pool.

The moment he saw me awake, he grabbed my hand so tightly I thought he might never let go again.

“You scared me.”

His voice cracked.

“I thought I lost both of you.”

I burst into tears.

“Our daughter…”

He smiled through his own tears.

“She’s alive.”

I couldn't breathe.

“She came early.”

“She’s tiny.”

“She’s in the NICU.”

“But she's fighting.”

Relief hit me so hard that I sobbed against his shoulder.

“She made it?”

“She made it.”

Our daughter weighed barely four pounds.

The emergency cesarean section had saved both our lives.

The obstetrician later explained that another few minutes underwater...

or another hard impact...

could have ended everything.

I looked through the nursery window at the tiny baby connected to tubes.

Daniel stood beside me.

“She already has your determination.”

I smiled weakly.

“No.”

“She has yours.”

The peace lasted less than an hour.

A detective entered my hospital room.

“Mrs. Herrera?”

I nodded.

“My name is Detective Alvarez.”

He sat beside my bed.

“I need to ask you what happened.”

I closed my eyes.

Then I told him everything.

Every loan.

Every demand.

Every conversation.

The punch.

The fall.

My father's words.

Valeria laughing.

He never interrupted.

Only took notes.

When I finished...

he quietly asked,

“Do you wish to file criminal charges?”

I didn't hesitate.

“Yes.”

By evening, the news had already reached the rest of the family.

My phone exploded with messages.

Not asking if I was alive.

Not asking about my baby.

Instead—

Don't destroy the family.

Your mother didn't mean it.

Pregnancy makes everyone emotional.

Think about forgiveness.

I stared at the screen in disbelief.

Daniel gently took the phone from my hands.

“You don't owe anyone an answer tonight.”

He switched it off.

The following morning, Detective Alvarez returned.

This time he wasn't alone.

He carried a tablet.

“We've recovered video footage.”

My heart skipped.

“What footage?”

“One of the guests recorded the gift opening.”

He turned the screen toward us.

At first, the camera focused on Valeria opening presents.

Then voices in the background became louder.

The person recording accidentally turned toward the pool.

My mother.

Me.

The argument.

Everything.

Clear.

Sharp.

Undeniable.

The punch was visible from beginning to end.

Gasps could be heard from people standing nearby.

Then—

My body falling backward into the water.

The detective paused the video.

“There were thirty-two guests.”

“Eighteen have already given statements.”

“Sixteen confirm your mother struck you intentionally.”

I felt my hands begin to shake.

For years...

No one had ever stood up to her.

Now strangers were telling the truth.

“What about my father?”

I asked quietly.

The detective looked down at his notes.

“Several witnesses confirmed hearing him say…”

He checked the exact wording.

“‘Leave her there. Maybe she'll learn her lesson.’”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The detective continued.

“One guest ignored him and jumped into the pool.”

“Who?”

He smiled faintly.

“His name is Miguel Santos.”

“He's the catering manager.”

“He told us…”

The detective looked directly at me.

“…that when no one else moved, he realized he was the only person willing to save you.”

Tears filled my eyes.

I had never met Miguel before that day.

Yet a complete stranger valued my life more than my own parents.

That afternoon, Miguel came to visit.

He looked uncomfortable standing in the hospital room holding a bouquet of supermarket flowers.

“I wasn't sure if visitors were allowed.”

Daniel immediately hugged him.

“You saved my wife.”

Miguel smiled awkwardly.

“I just did what anyone should have done.”

“No,” Daniel answered.

“You did what no one else did.”

Miguel looked down.

“I have two daughters.”

“I kept imagining one of them in that pool.”

“I couldn't just watch.”

I reached for his hand.

“You saved my daughter too.”

His eyes filled with tears.

Later that evening, the doctor wheeled me to the NICU.

There she was.

So tiny.

So perfect.

Wrapped inside the incubator.

I slipped one finger through the opening.

Her impossibly small hand curled around it.

The nurse smiled.

“She knows her mother.”

I whispered through tears,

“I'll never let anyone hurt you.”

Three days later, I was discharged.

Before leaving the hospital, Detective Alvarez met us one last time.

He handed Daniel a copy of the police report.

Then another envelope.

“What's this?”

“A copy of the arrest warrant.”

I frowned.

“For who?”

The detective looked at me carefully.

“For your mother.”

I stared at the paper.

Attempted aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Child endangerment.

The investigation was moving faster than anyone expected.

Then he added one sentence that made my blood run cold.

“There's something else you need to know.”

I looked up.

“Yesterday morning…”

May you like

“…your sister emptied every bank account she shared with your parents…”

“…and disappeared.”
