Plot twist

PART 3 – The Marriage That Was Never Real

The room went completely still.

Even Daniel stopped struggling against the deputy holding his arm.

He stared at Evelyn.

"What are you talking about?"

Evelyn slowly closed the folder in her hands.

"I wish I were wrong."

She looked at me before continuing.

"But the forensic team has uncovered communications that predate your engagement."

A chill crept down my spine.

"What communications?"

She nodded toward the investigator standing beside her.

He connected another laptop to the television.

An encrypted email appeared on the screen.

From: Daniel Cole

To: Victor Lang

Subject: The Consultant

The message was dated almost two years earlier.

Months before Daniel had proposed.

Evelyn read aloud.

"The consultant assigned by Vale Meridian seems intelligent but emotionally guarded."

"If I earn her trust, she may provide insight into future acquisitions."

"Father thinks she's close to executive leadership."

"If this works, our family won't have to worry about lease renewals again."

My stomach turned.

Daniel's face drained of color.

"I..."

He looked at me desperately.

"It wasn't like that."

No one believed him.

The next email appeared.

"Dinner went well."

"She thinks I'm genuinely interested in her."

"She's impossible to read."

"If she's promoted high enough, marriage isn't out of the question."

The deputy beside Daniel quietly muttered,

"My God."

I felt strangely calm.

Not because it didn't hurt.

Because the pain was too deep to become tears.

Every memory replayed itself differently.

The flowers.

The vacations.

The late-night phone calls.

The proposal beside the lake.

Every beautiful moment suddenly had a price tag attached.

Daniel shook his head violently.

"I changed."

"I swear I changed."

His father suddenly shouted,

"Stop talking!"

Everyone looked at him.

His shoulders had collapsed.

He looked twenty years older than he had that morning.

"This has gone far enough."

Daniel stared at him.

"You told me to do it."

Margaret gasped.

"What?"

"You said we needed access."

"You said the company would eventually belong to us."

His father closed his eyes.

"I never told you to marry her."

"You said I had to get close."

"I said build relationships."

"You said whatever it takes!"

The room erupted into shouting.

Vanessa pointed at her father.

"So this was your plan all along?"

"No."

"You used Daniel!"

"I was trying to save the company!"

Margaret looked from one man to the other in horror.

"You lied to all of us?"

Her husband answered quietly.

"I didn't think it would go this far."

Evelyn interrupted the chaos.

"It went much farther than you realize."

She handed me another folder.

"Our audit uncovered something else."

I opened it.

Inside were dozens of invoices.

Consulting agreements.

Vendor contracts.

Bank transfers.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Then I noticed one company name appearing again and again.

Lakeview Procurement LLC.

I frowned.

"I've never heard of them."

The investigator nodded.

"Neither had we."

"They don't actually exist."

Daniel looked confused.

"What does that have to do with me?"

The investigator clicked another slide.

The ownership records appeared.

The sole owner was...

Richard Cole.

Daniel's father.

The investigator spoke calmly.

"For eight years, false invoices were submitted through this shell company."

"Money intended for hotel renovations was diverted."

"Luxury renovations to this estate."

"Private vacations."

"Vehicles."

"Personal expenses."

Margaret staggered backward.

"Richard..."

He couldn't meet her eyes.

The total appeared on the screen.

$42,817,643.91

Forty-two million dollars.

The room fell silent.

Daniel whispered,

"...Dad?"

His father finally broke.

"I was going to repay it."

"When?"

"I..."

"When?"

No answer came.

The investigator continued.

"Unfortunately..."

"There's more."

He displayed architectural blueprints.

I immediately recognized the property.

The mansion.

The lakefront estate.

Several areas had been highlighted in red.

"What is this?"

He zoomed in.

"Hidden renovations."

"Secret wine cellar."

"Underground theater."

"Indoor spa."

Margaret looked shocked.

"We paid for those."

"No."

"You thought you did."

"They were billed to corporate capital improvement projects."

She slowly turned toward her husband.

"You stole from the company?"

"For years?"

He began crying.

"I was protecting our lifestyle."

Daniel looked physically ill.

He turned toward me.

"I didn't know."

I studied his face carefully.

For the first time since we'd met...

I believed him.

He knew about the manipulation.

He knew about trying to get close to me.

But he hadn't known the scale of his father's fraud.

That truth didn't erase what he'd done.

It simply made the tragedy larger.

The deputies approached Richard Cole.

"Sir..."

"We're placing you under arrest for financial fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, and embezzlement."

Margaret collapsed into a chair.

"No..."

"This can't be happening."

Richard didn't resist.

As officers escorted him toward the door, he stopped beside Daniel.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel looked away.

"I wanted you to be proud of me."

His father whispered,

"I always was."

Then he was gone.

The mansion felt strangely empty.

Only hours earlier it had been filled with certainty.

Now every wall seemed to echo with secrets.

Vanessa quietly sat on the staircase.

"I thought we were rich."

Evelyn answered gently.

"You were."

"You just weren't wealthy."

"There's a difference."

Daniel remained standing in the middle of the living room.

Handcuffed.

Broken.

He looked at me one final time.

"I never stopped loving you."

I answered honestly.

"I think part of you did."

"But the part that loved power..."

"...always loved it more."

The deputy guided him toward the front door.

Just before stepping outside, Daniel turned back.

"Amelia..."

"If you discover something else..."

"...about why I married you..."

"...please don't believe everything my father wrote."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

He hesitated.

Then lowered his voice.

"There's one file..."

"...that even Evelyn hasn't found."

The room became quiet again.

"What file?"

Daniel looked directly into my eyes.

May you like

"The one proving..."

"...I wasn't the first member of my family who tried to marry a woman named Vale."
