Part 2: The Will of Valerie Vance

The hospital door slammed shut, the heavy deadbolt clicking into place with a sound that felt like a judicial execution. Marcus stood over the bed, tossing his paper coffee cup into the waste bin as his fake facade of premature grief completely dissolved. Beside him, the sharp, rhythmic click of stiletto heels announced the arrival of my younger sister, Victoria. She was dressed in a pristine designer coat, her eyes cold and calculating, completely devoid of the hysterical tears she had been shedding for the press downstairs.

"What do you mean, the boy called for help, Marcus?" Victoria hissed, her voice dropping into a frantic, low pitch as she grabbed her brother-in-law's arm. "The notary is coming up the service elevator right now with the corporate restructuring portfolio. If that kid has been talking to external firms, the asset transfer will trigger an automatic federal auditing freeze."

"He's a nine-year-old child, Victoria," Marcus snarled, stepping aggressively toward Leo, who stood his ground in front of my bed, his small fists clenched inside his striped sleeves. "He doesn't know any estate lawyers. He’s bluffing to protect his mother."

"I'm not bluffing!" Leo shouted, his voice cracking with a fierce, brand-new defiance that filled me with overwhelming pride. "Mom made me memorize Ms. Lawson's cell phone number last month. She told me if she ever had an accident on the highway, I wasn't supposed to trust either of you. I called her from the cafeteria payphone an hour ago. She’s already on her way with the state marshals!"

Victoria turned deathly pale, her manicured hand flying to her mouth. "Marcus... the brakes. If Lawson initiates a forensic engineering report on the Suburban, they’ll find the severed line in the brake fluid reservoir. We need to sign the medical power-of-attorney documents and authorize the immediate termination of life support before she can present a counter-injunction!"

I lay there, a frozen prisoner within my own skin, listening to my husband and my own sister plot the systematic termination of my life. The searing rage that burned through my veins was absolute. They had planned it perfectly—the slick, rain-soaked curve, the guardrail impact, the twisted metal. They wanted the properties, the Manhattan estate, and the eighty-million-dollar tech portfolio. But their biggest mistake was assuming I hadn't seen the stone-cold look in Marcus's eyes two weeks ago when I flatly refused to sign over my master holding rights.

Marcus pulled a thick leather folder from his briefcase, sliding the notary papers directly onto the bedside table, right over Leo’s crayon drawings. He grabbed a heavy silver pen and shoved it toward Victoria.

"Sign as the secondary familial witness," Marcus ordered, his breath shallow with desperation. "Once the notary timestamps the signature, we’ll instruct the ward administrator to execute an immediate chemical decoupling of her oxygen network. By the time Lawson gets past the security desk, Valerie will be gone, and the Connecticut estate will be legally insulated."

Victoria took the pen, her fingers trembling as she leaned down over my bed, her perfume wrapping around my face like an open grave. "Goodbye, big sister," she whispered right against my ear. "You always did love being the center of attention."
