PART 3: RECLAIMING THE STEPS OF TIME

The door to the intensive care unit (ICU) creaked open. The dim yellow light inside the room framed Amelia’s fragile silhouette. The steady beep of the intravenous monitor pulsed through the sterile silence.

Ethan stepped inside, his footsteps so light they were virtually soundless. He looked down at the woman who had been his entire world a decade ago, now looking as fragile as a fallen leaf. He sat on the bedside chair, gently taking her thin, needle-bruised hand into his own large palm. Her hand, which used to be so warm when they walked locked together through Central Park, was freezing.

Amelia’s eyelids fluttered. When her eyes opened and locked onto Ethan, a flash of defensive panic mixed with absolute exhaustion crossed her face. She weakly tried to pull her hand back, but Ethan squeezed gently, holding it fast.

"What... what are you doing here?" Amelia thieved through her oxygen mask. "Who gave you permission to be in here?"

"Maya found me, Amelia," Ethan said, a rare tear tracking down the hardened lines of his face. "Our daughter saved your life."

Amelia turned her head away, the heavy tears she had suppressed for six years finally spilling over, soaking the white hospital pillow. "I don't want your pity, Ethan. I only went to your hotel because... I have no one else left to trust with Maya. I refuse to let her go into the foster system. After I'm gone, take her, change her last name, but please... never tell her that her father once abandoned her mother."

"I am not changing her name, and I am not letting you go," Ethan said, standing tall as his powerful demeanor returned—but this time, it wasn't to control a financial empire, but to protect his family. He pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket—his own bone marrow compatibility report, which he had forced Dr. Ross to run the second they arrived. "I am a ninety-nine percent match for you, Amelia. I am the only person on this earth who can save you right now."

Amelia froze, her head snapping back to look at the document in his hand.

"Six years ago, I was a gutless coward running from the responsibility of being a father," Ethan bent down, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "But I have spent the last six years learning how hollow it feels to own buildings and assets without a real home to return to. This time, I will use the entire weight of the Stone Group, my fortune, and my own life to keep you here."

The door swung open, and Maya walked in, holding her plush rabbit. Seeing her mother awake, her storm-blue eyes lit up with the pure, unadulterated happiness of a child. She ran straight to the bed, climbing up to rest her head against Amelia’s chest.

Ethan stood beside them, wrapping his large arms around both mother and child. The rhythmic pulse of Amelia’s heart monitor began to beat stronger, as if her very will to live had been reignited by the absolute conviction of the man beside her.

Outside the hospital window, the lights of Manhattan activated, glowing like a magnificent kingdom. The financial empire of Ethan Stone outside that glass could be run by anyone, but his true reign—built on redemption, love, and the blue eyes of his daughter—had just officially begun.
