Part 2: The Audit of a Marriage

The heavy door to Room 214 didn't just open; it was pushed inward with the absolute weight of federal authority.

Two men in dark tailored suits stepped into the clinical light of the post-partum room, flanked by St. Mary’s Hospital security. The aggressive, towering stance Daniel had maintained just a few seconds ago evaporated instantly. He lowered his fists, his face turning an ash-grey color that matched his grey-tinged hair.

"Daniel Thorne?" the leading man asked, pulling a leather wallet from his breast pocket to display a gold badge. "I am Special Agent Marcus Vance with the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division. We have a federal warrant for your arrest, alongside an immediate freeze on all corporate and personal assets associated with Thorne Digital Solutions."

Patricia dropped her glass bowl. It shattered violently against the linoleum floor, scattering grapes and sharp shards of glass right at Daniel’s feet. "What is the meaning of this?!" she shrieked, her gold bracelets clattering as she stood up. "My son is a prominent executive! You can't just barge into a private medical wing!"

"Your son is a fraud, Patricia," I said, my voice carrying the icy, unyielding tone of a professional investigator who had just closed a six-month-old trap.

I set Noah's carrier safely on the recovery bed and pulled the thin black folder out from the side pocket of the diaper bag. I tossed it onto the overbed table right in front of Daniel.

"You told me you were working late on Saturdays to secure the venture capital for our son's future," I said, looking at him with absolute disdain. "You told me the sudden missing funds from our joint account were just 'temporary market adjustments.' But while I was pregnant, slow, and tired, I wasn't blind. I installed a passive keystroke tracker on our home router."

Daniel stared at the black folder, his hands trembling as he opened it. Inside were scanned copies of offshore bank routing numbers based in the Cayman Islands, unauthorized wire transfers, and three highly confidential patent documents belonging to my father's engineering firm—bearing a signature that looked like mine, but wasn't.

"You forged my signature as a co-guarantor for a six-million-dollar corporate shell loan, Daniel," I explained, stepping closer until he could see the cold certainty in my eyes. "You and your mother thought I was just an exhausted housewife who would keep shrinking myself to fit inside your arrogant life. You thought if you treated me like an inconvenience, I would be too depressed to look at the ledgers. But seven years of tracking corporate predators taught me one thing: the most arrogant target always leaves the widest digital footprint."

Agent Vance stepped forward, grabbing Daniel's arms and twisting them behind his back. The loud, metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the small hospital room, cutting through the rhythmic beeping of the monitor.

"Maddie, please!" Daniel choked out, his arrogance completely dissolving into pathetic terror as the cold steel bit into his wrists. "Think about Noah! I did it to build an empire for our son! We can settle this privately, your father doesn't have to press charges!"
