Part 2: The Lie That Stole a Billionaire’s Daughter

No one moved.
The attorney who had shouted stood frozen beside his chair, breathing as if he had just sprinted up forty-three flights of stairs instead of riding the elevator.
Every eye in the conference room shifted toward him.
Nathan's voice cut through the silence.
"What are you talking about?"
The attorney swallowed hard.
His name was Daniel Mercer, one of Whitaker Global's oldest legal advisors. He had represented Nathan since before the company became a billion-dollar empire. Daniel wasn't a man who panicked.
Which made his fear impossible to ignore.
"I think we should speak privately," Daniel said carefully.
Nathan's expression darkened.
"There are no private conversations today."
Daniel glanced at me.
Then at Rose.
His face grew even paler.
"Not with... her here."
I folded my arms.
"If this concerns my daughter, I believe I deserve to hear every word."
Nathan looked between us.
"Someone start explaining."
Nobody did.
For nearly ten seconds, the room remained perfectly still.
Finally Daniel reached into his briefcase and removed an old leather folder.
"I've carried this for eighteen months."
Nathan frowned.
"What is it?"
"A mistake."
He placed the folder on the polished walnut table.
"My biggest mistake."
Nathan slowly opened it.
Inside were hospital records.
Private investigator reports.
Copies of emails.
Phone logs.
And one photograph.
Nathan stared at the picture for several seconds before looking up.
"I've never seen this."
"You weren't supposed to."
A knot tightened in my stomach.
I had never seen those papers either.
Daniel looked directly at me.
"Mrs. Whitaker... there are things you never knew."
My heartbeat quickened.
"What things?"
Daniel took a deep breath.
"Eighteen months ago, you tried to contact Mr. Whitaker."
I nodded.
"More than once."
"I know."
"You know?"
"I intercepted every message."
The room exploded with confusion.
Nathan stood so suddenly that his chair rolled backward across the floor.
"You what?"
Daniel's voice cracked.
"I blocked every phone call."
Nathan's eyes widened.
"I answered every email before it reached your inbox."
Silence.
"I returned every certified letter unopened."
Nathan looked like someone had punched him.
"What the hell are you saying?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"When Olivia discovered she was pregnant..."
Nathan turned toward me so quickly I thought he might fall.
"Pregnant?"
I couldn't answer.
Not yet.
Daniel continued.
"She spent weeks trying to tell you."
Nathan slowly shook his head.
"No."
"She came to your office."
"I would've seen her."
"No."
Daniel looked down.
"I instructed security not to allow her inside."
The blood drained from Nathan's face.
"What?"
"They were told she was emotionally unstable."
The room became deathly quiet.
"They were told she was attempting to damage the company's reputation."
Nathan whispered one word.
"Why?"
Daniel looked years older than he had five minutes earlier.
"Because the board believed a child would destroy the merger."
Nobody spoke.
"The Whitaker-Kensington acquisition depended on your public image."
Nathan stared blankly.
Daniel continued.
"The investors wanted you portrayed as completely unattached."
Nathan looked physically sick.
"My wife..."
Daniel nodded.
"They believed your marriage had become... inconvenient."
My hands began trembling.
I remembered everything now.
Every phone call that went unanswered.
Every letter returned.
Every security guard refusing to let me inside.
Every assistant claiming Nathan was unavailable.
Every lonely night wondering how the man who once loved me could ignore news that would change both our lives forever.
I had blamed him.
Every single day.
Nathan turned toward me.
His voice barely existed.
"You tried?"
Tears filled my eyes.
"I tried for six weeks."
He couldn't breathe.
"I never knew."
I nodded slowly.
"I know."
Nathan looked back at Daniel.
"You let her think..."
Daniel couldn't meet his eyes.
"Yes."
"You let me think she abandoned me."
"Yes."
Nathan slammed both hands onto the conference table.
The sound echoed through the room.
"You let my daughter grow up without her father!"
Nobody answered.
Nathan's breathing became uneven.
For the first time since I'd ever known him, he looked completely out of control.
"I trusted you."
Daniel nodded sadly.
"I know."
"I built this company with you."
"I know."
"You watched me sign divorce papers..."
"I know."
Nathan's voice broke.
"...without telling me I had a daughter."
Daniel whispered, "Yes."
The room felt impossibly small.
Rose stirred in her carrier and opened her eyes.
She looked around with quiet curiosity, completely unaware that her life had just changed forever.
Nathan noticed her movement.
Slowly...
Very slowly...
He walked around the table.
Nobody stopped him.
He stopped less than three feet away from us.
His eyes never left Rose.
She blinked at him.
Then smiled.
A tiny baby smile.
Nothing more.
But it shattered him.
His knees nearly gave out.
He knelt in front of us, still wearing the perfectly tailored suit that had once symbolized absolute control.
Now it looked like armor that had finally cracked.
His eyes filled with tears.
"I missed everything."
I couldn't speak.
"Her first smile."
Silence.
"Her first laugh."
More silence.
"When she opened her eyes for the first time..."
His voice disappeared.
"I wasn't there."
Rose reached one tiny hand toward him.
Instinctively.
Without fear.
Nathan hesitated.
"May I?"
He looked at me instead of touching her.
It was the first time in years he had asked permission instead of assuming he deserved it.
I studied him.
This wasn't the cold billionaire from an hour ago.
This was simply a father meeting his child.
I nodded.
He carefully offered one finger.
Rose wrapped her tiny hand around it.
Nathan completely fell apart.
A tear landed on the back of her little hand.
She giggled.
Actually giggled.
As though she had known him forever.
Nobody in the room said a word.
Several attorneys quietly looked away.
One assistant wiped her eyes.
Daniel remained standing alone, carrying the weight of what he had done.
Nathan looked at me.
"I would've come."
"I know."
"I would've chosen both of you."
"I believe you."
His shoulders shook.
"I'm so sorry."
Before I could answer, the conference room doors burst open.
A woman walked in wearing an expensive white suit and carrying a designer handbag.
She stopped cold the moment she saw Rose.
"Nathan?"
He slowly stood.
His face instantly changed.
Not into anger.
Into disbelief.
The woman looked directly at me.
Then at the baby.
Then at the DNA envelope lying open on the table.
Her confidence vanished.
"I can explain."
Nathan frowned.
"Explain what?"
She looked around nervously.
"My father told me not to say anything."
I recognized her immediately.
Victoria Kensington.
The billionaire heiress Nathan had supposedly been dating ever since our separation.
The woman every business magazine described as his "perfect future wife."
She looked terrified.
Nathan stared at her.
"What does your father have to do with any of this?"
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
"Everything."
Daniel slowly lowered his head.
Nathan noticed.
His expression became ice cold.
"You knew too?"
Victoria whispered, "Yes."
Nathan stepped backward as if someone had struck him.
"You both knew I had a daughter..."
Victoria nodded.
"...and neither of you told me?"
"No."
Nathan laughed.
It wasn't a happy laugh.
It was the sound of a man realizing his entire life had been manipulated by the people he trusted most.
Victoria took one step toward him.
"Nathan, please listen—"
He raised one hand.
She stopped immediately.
His next words froze every person in the room.
"If you knew about my child..."
He looked directly into Victoria's eyes.
"...then our engagement was never real."
Victoria's face turned white.
Because she understood exactly what he meant.
But before anyone could respond, the conference room television suddenly switched on by itself.
The screen lit up.
A prerecorded video began playing.
It showed a private board meeting from nearly two years earlier.
And the first voice everyone heard belonged to Victoria's father.
"If Nathan ever discovers Olivia is carrying his baby," the billionaire chairman said with a smile, "our entire acquisition collapses. Make sure he never finds out."
The room went completely silent.
No one had turned on the television.
No one admitted sending the recording.
Somewhere inside Whitaker Tower...
May you like
Someone else knew the truth.
