PART 2: THE BLACKWOOD DECREE

PART 2: THE BLACKWOOD DECREE
The sound of the hydraulic locks sealing the chamber doors echoed through the subterranean vault like a gunshot. Margaret Blackwood dropped her cane against the stone floor, the metal tip clattering into the darkness.
"You've sealed us in, Victor," Margaret whispered, her voice shaking as she backed away toward the bottom step. "You promised me that if she kept quiet, you wouldn't use the lower grid."
"The lower grid belongs to the firm now, Margaret," Victor Hale replied, his tone smooth, professional, and entirely unbothered by the darkness creeping into the corners of the room. He reached into his tailored breast pocket, not pulling a weapon, but a small, encrypted tablet that glowed with rows of active network codes. "Claire didn't just stumble into the east wing library an hour ago. She accessed the corporate ledger for Blackwood Industries. She knows about the phantom acquisitions in Geneva."
Nathan stepped in front of Claire, his wide shoulders completely blocking Victor’s view of his bride. His unbuttoned shirt collar showed the frantic pulse pounding in his neck. "You touched her, Victor. You put your hands on my wife. I don't give a damn about the Geneva accounts or the company assets. You are going to look me in the eye and tell me why you think you're leaving this room alive."
"Nathan, look at the parchment in your hand," Claire said softly, her voice steadying despite the raw pain radiating from her collarbone. She touched his shoulder, her fingers gripping the fine fabric of his tuxedo jacket. "It’s not a corporate contract. It’s a 2006 estate transfer. Your father didn't die of a heart attack twenty years ago in this room. He was liquidated."
Nathan’s eyes dropped to the yellowed paper. The elegant cursive handwriting belonged to his father, Julian Blackwood. The document was a complete confession, detailing how Victor Hale had systematically blackmailed the family using a fraudulent environmental dump site liability scheme to seize control of eighty percent of the family’s voting shares. At the bottom, the signature line was smeared with a dark, dried brown stain that had faded over two decades.
"He tried to expose you to the federal regulators," Nathan murmured, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "My mother didn't beg Claire to leave because she hated her. She begged her to leave because she knew you would murder anyone who discovered how you bought this estate."
Victor adjusted his silver cufflinks, looking at Nathan with a chilling level of pity. "Your father was a visionary, Nathan, but he lacked the stomach for international compliance. The shipping lines required a cleaner structure. I provided that. Now, Claire is going to hand over the silver USB drive containing the decryption algorithm she downloaded from my terminal, or the air filtration system in this sub-floor will be permanently deactivated."

"The deactivation protocol requires a dual-biometric confirmation from the main terminal upstairs," Claire countered, stepping out from behind Nathan, her face a mask of cold, analytical defiance. She held up the silver flash drive, the metallic surface catching the fading beam of light from the circular skylight. "I didn't just copy your files, Victor. I redirected the estate's primary server firewall to an off-site federal database. If my heartbeat or Nathan’s heartbeat stops inside this vault, the encryption structure collapses, and the entire Geneva fraud network is broadcast to the Securities and Exchange Commission automatically."
Victor’s smooth composure wavered for a single fraction of a second, his silver eyebrows knitting together as he looked at the young woman who had documented his variables before she even put on her veil.
