Plot twist

Part 4: The Vanguard Era

The autumn air over the Hudson River was crisp, carrying the sharp scent of early frost and corporate success.

I stood on the helipad roof of the Vance Global tower, my long woolen coat billowing behind me as the rotors of the private helicopter began to slow down.

Below me, Manhattan stretched out like a massive grid of glass and stone, an empire that no longer had the name Miller anywhere on its map.

Marcus walked out from the glass vestibule, holding a digital tablet showing the morning market openings.

— The hostile takeover of the shipping lanes is completely finalized, Ms. Vance, he said, his voice carrying a deep, quiet satisfaction. The Vanguard stock just hit an all-time high after the morning bell.

— And the child welfare foundation we funded with the Miller estate? I asked, turning to face him.

— The first sanctuary home in Boston opens next month, Marcus smiled. We've named it after your mother.

I looked out at the horizon, where the sun was finally breaking through the grey autumn clouds, painting the skyline in shades of gold and amber.

For twenty years, I had lived as an orphan, carrying a name that felt like an empty room, believing that stability was something I would have to beg for from families like the Millers.

But standing at the top of the city, looking at the future we had built from the ruins of their betrayal, I knew the truth.

The penniless orphan they had tried to humiliate at the Plaza Hotel was gone.

And the queen had finally taken her throne.

My phone buzzed in my pocket—a text alert from the corporate legal team showing that Thomas’s final appeal had been denied by the state supreme court.

I locked the screen, slipping the device back into my blazer without a single word.

The engagement party was over.

The champagne had dried.

And the real empire was finally ours.
