PART 3: THE CHESSBOARD OF TRIBECA

PART 3: THE CHESSBOARD OF TRIBECA

The heavy steel door of the 14th Street basement was kicked open with an explosive force that silenced the entire underground poker room. High-rolling criminals, corrupt politicians, and heavily armed bodyguards froze as Jack Callahan walked down the concrete steps, Ryan Cole following like a shadow of death.

At the central table, surrounded by stacks of hundred-dollar bills and expensive crystal tumblers of scotch, sat Julian Callahan. He looked identical to Jack, save for the weak, arrogant curve of his jaw and the frantic, nervous energy in his eyes. When he saw his older brother, Julian’s smile faltered, but he quickly tried to regain his posture, gesturing to his personal guards.

"Jack! What a surprise," Julian laughed, though his hand shook as he set his drink down. "I thought you were brooding in your lonely penthouse, mourning the loss of your beautiful little wife."

Before Julian’s bodyguards could even reach for their holstered weapons, Ryan Cole had his gun aimed directly between the lead guard's eyes. The room became an absolute vacuum of tension.

Jack didn't shout. He walked slowly to the table, knocked a massive pile of chips to the floor with a casual flick of his hand, and leaned in close to his brother, mirroring the exact posture he had held over Hannah’s hospital bed hours prior.

"You drugged her, Julian," Jack whispered, his voice a low, terrifying growl that made the seasoned gamblers at the table slide quietly out of their seats. "You tracked her to Queens. You threatened my unborn child."

Julian’s face went pale, but his arrogance wouldn't let him back down. "She’s a liability, Jack! You became soft the moment you married that schoolteacher. The docks are chaotic, the unions are talking to the feds, and you’re wasting time worrying about her? I did what had to be done to get your head back in the game. Besides, who says the kid is yours? She walked out on you three months ago."

Jack’s left hand shot out like a lightning bolt, wrapping tightly around Julian’s throat and slamming his head down onto the green felt of the poker table. Glasses shattered, spilling dark liquor across the cards. Julian choked, his legs kicking wildly as Jack pressed his weight down, his eyes entirely devoid of humanity.

"If she dies, Julian, I will not bury you," Jack hissed into his brother's ear, his grip tightening until Julian's face turned a dangerous shade of purple. "I will throw you into the East River myself, and no one in this city will ever look for your body. You are going to tell me exactly who gave you the synthetic sedatives you used on her, and you are going to give me the keys to every single account you used to track her."

"It was... it was the Marcone family!" Julian gasped out, his hands clawing uselessly at Jack’s iron wrists. "They... they wanted to break you, Jack! They promised me your seat at the boardroom if I helped them remove your legacy! I didn't want to kill her... just get her out of New York!"

Jack released his grip, letting Julian slump onto the table, coughing violently and clutching his bruised throat. Jack stood tall, wiping a stray drop of his brother's sweat from his cufflink. He looked down at the pathetic creature he shared blood with.

"Ryan, call the feds. Give them the encryption keys to Julian’s offshore accounts. Let them have him for the corporate fraud we’ve been tracking for the last year," Jack commanded. "As for the Marcone family... tell the docks that the truce is officially over."

Jack didn't wait to see his brother dragged away. He walked back out into the rain, his mind entirely focused on the hospital. The corporate empire he had spent his youth building meant absolutely nothing if the woman he loved didn't wake up to see it crumble. He had spent his whole life playing chess with the devil, but tonight, he was ready to flip the board entirely.
