Part 3: Reckoning

The transition from absolute power to absolute nothingness took less than ten minutes.
Adrian fell to his knees on the exact same spot where he had forced me to kneel moments ago. He grabbed the edge of my dress, his face twisted in a pathetic plea. "Elena, please. Three years. We built a life. I love you. Don't let your father do this to me. I'll get rid of Vanessa. I'll do whatever you want!"
Vanessa screamed in outrage. "Adrian! What did you just say?!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Adrian yelled back, his voice cracked with desperation. "You ruined everything! You whispered those lies in my ear!"
I looked down at them, feeling absolutely nothing but a profound sense of detachment. The dangerous, handsome man who investors trusted was gone. In his place was a broken opportunist who had finally flown too close to the sun.
"You asked me earlier if I married you for your money," I said quietly, stepping back so his hands slipped from my dress. "The truth is, Adrian, your entire net worth wouldn't cover the annual maintenance fee on my father’s private yacht. I married you because I genuinely believed you loved me for who I was. I stayed quiet because I wanted you to feel strong. But you mistook my silence for weakness."
The security guards stepped forward, grabbing Adrian by his arms and pulling him up from the floor. He didn't fight back. His legs were too weak to carry him. Vanessa followed closely behind, crying hysterically as her expensive heels clicked erratically against the marble foyer, a stark contrast to the elegant woman who had been gloating just minutes before.
As they were escorted out into the pouring rain, the heavy front doors slammed shut, leaving the mansion profoundly quiet.
The bright light from the crystal chandelier shone down on the empty room. I walked over to the sofa, picked up my coat, and looked at the divorce folder lying on the floor. I kicked it aside with my shoe.

My phone vibrated in my hand again. It was a text from my father. “The car is outside, sweetheart. Welcome home.”
I took a deep, clear breath, feeling the weight of the last three years lift entirely from my shoulders. I walked out of the house without looking back, leaving Adrian Vale’s collapsed empire entirely in the dark.
