Part 3 – The Inheritance No One Was Meant to Find

The room fell into stunned silence.

Alejandro stared at the photograph until his fingers tightened around its edges.

On the back, the message remained painfully clear.

She was never your maid's daughter.

Mariana's face turned ghostly white.

Detective Emma Brooks slowly turned toward her.

"Mrs. López..."

Mariana lowered her head.

"I never wanted this to happen."

Alejandro's voice became dangerously calm.

"Tell me the truth."

She didn't answer.

"For once," he continued, "no more lies."

Tears rolled down Mariana's cheeks.

"I promised someone I would never tell."

"Who?"

She looked directly at the old photograph lying on the conference table.

"Your father."

...

Twenty-four years earlier...

Mariana had been only sixteen years old.

Her mother worked as a housekeeper in the Rivas estate alongside a young woman named Isabel.

Isabel wasn't just another employee.

She was kind, intelligent, and quietly ambitious.

She dreamed of becoming an architect.

Alejandro's father, Eduardo Rivas, noticed her.

At first, he sponsored her college tuition.

Later, he secretly fell in love with her.

No one was supposed to know.

Especially not Rebeca.

"They had a daughter," Mariana whispered.

"The baby in the photograph."

Alejandro's breathing became shallow.

"My father had another child?"

Mariana nodded.

"He wanted to acknowledge her."

"But before he could..."

"Isabel disappeared."

"She didn't disappear," Rosa interrupted softly.

"She was forced to leave."

Everyone turned toward the elderly housekeeper.

Rosa had been listening quietly from the doorway.

"I saw what happened."

Rebeca discovered the affair.

She offered Isabel money to disappear forever.

When Isabel refused...

Rosa's voice trembled.

"...she threatened to destroy both mother and child."

Alejandro clenched his fists.

"My mother knew?"

Rosa nodded slowly.

"She protected the family name."

...

Detective Brooks leaned forward.

"What does any of this have to do with Valentina?"

Mariana wiped away her tears.

"Everything."

She reached into her purse and carefully removed an old silver locket.

Inside were two tiny photographs.

One showed Isabel holding a baby.

The other showed a teenage girl.

"My mother kept this."

Alejandro frowned.

"Who is the girl?"

"Isabel's daughter."

"And?"

Mariana looked at him.

"She grew up."

"She became my closest friend."

The detective suddenly understood.

"Wait..."

"That means..."

Mariana nodded.

"Valentina's mother wasn't me."

The room became silent.

"I adopted her."

Alejandro felt as though the ground had disappeared beneath him.

"What?"

Mariana closed her eyes.

"Three years ago..."

"Her real mother died from cancer."

"Before she died, she begged me to protect her daughter."

"I promised."

"So legally..."

Detective Brooks asked.

Mariana nodded.

"I became Valentina's guardian."

Alejandro looked at the little girl's photograph again.

If everything Mariana was saying was true...

Valentina wasn't just an ordinary child.

She was Eduardo Rivas's granddaughter.

Which meant...

She carried the Rivas bloodline.

...

Before anyone could speak, Alejandro's attorney burst into the room carrying a thick envelope.

"You need to see this immediately."

He emptied the contents across the table.

It was Eduardo Rivas's final will.

One page had never been filed with probate court.

Hidden behind it was a handwritten amendment.

Alejandro began reading aloud.

"If my granddaughter can ever be located..."

He stopped.

His voice caught.

"Fifty-one percent of Rivas Development Corporation shall pass directly to her upon reaching eighteen years of age."

Everyone stared.

Fifty-one percent.

Not money.

Control.

Whoever owned fifty-one percent controlled the entire billion-dollar empire.

Detective Brooks finally understood.

"This wasn't a kidnapping for ransom."

Alejandro nodded grimly.

"It was an inheritance kidnapping."

Someone wanted the only heir to disappear.

Forever.

...

Across town...

Valentina slowly opened her eyes.

She was lying on a small bed inside an old farmhouse.

Sunlight streamed through lace curtains.

The room smelled of cinnamon.

An elderly woman entered carrying warm milk and toast.

"Good morning, sweetheart."

Valentina looked around nervously.

"Where's Mommy?"

The woman smiled sadly.

"Soon."

"I want my mommy."

"I know."

The woman gently stroked her hair.

"You're very brave."

Valentina looked at the stuffed bunny lying beside her.

"You aren't bad people."

The woman froze.

"Why do you think that?"

"You tucked Bunny in too."

The elderly woman's eyes filled with tears.

Outside the room, Gabriel Mendoza listened quietly.

He sighed.

"I told you she'd be sweet."

The woman glared at him.

"You should never have taken her."

"I didn't have a choice."

"You always have a choice."

Gabriel looked toward the window.

"They found us sooner than expected."

...

Back at the mansion...

Police finally traced the envelope containing Valentina's photograph.

It had been mailed from a tiny post office nearly two hundred miles away.

Surveillance footage showed Gabriel buying the stamp.

But he wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was someone wearing a large sun hat and dark sunglasses.

The woman's face couldn't be seen.

However...

The detective zoomed in on her right hand.

A large emerald ring sparkled under the security camera.

Alejandro's face went pale.

He knew that ring.

There was only one person in the family who had worn it every day for over thirty years.

His mother.

Rebeca Rivas.

At that exact moment, a security officer rushed into the room.

"Sir!"

"What is it?"

"Mrs. Rebeca Rivas is gone."

"What?"

"Her bedroom is empty."

"So is her car."

Alejandro slowly looked toward the surveillance image.

Then back at the empty driveway outside the mansion.

For the first time in his life...

He realized the woman who had raised him...

May you like

...might also be the mastermind behind the disappearance of her own granddaughter.
