Part 2: The Audit of Blood

The courier quietly handed me the clipboard. With my left hand still supporting Hazel against my chest, I signed my name with absolute steadiness. The man handed over the thick, cream-colored document bearing the official seal of the Department of Defense Legal Services, gave a polite nod to my uniform jacket hanging near the door, and exited.

Martha stared at the envelope, her aggressive posture flickering with a brief moment of hesitation. "What is that? More military nonsense to hide behind? You think a piece of paper makes you exempt from helping your sister?"

"This paper is the reason I didn't answer your text, Mom," I said, my voice entirely devoid of the childhood guilt she usually weaponized against me. I walked over to the dining table and laid the document flat under the light. "For seven years, since my first deployment bonus, I have been wiring money into the account you co-signed with Penny. Every 'rent crisis,' every 'car repair' that turned out to be a vacation, and every single utility bill I paid while she was buying designer clothes on credit."

"Family doesn't keep score, Nora!" Martha snapped, her sharp bob shaking as she crossed her arms. "You have a stable government income. Penny is a single mother struggling to survive!"

"Penny hasn't been struggling to survive, Mom. She's been committing fraud," I replied, sliding the first page of the document toward her. "Because I am active-duty military, my personal bank accounts are subjected to routine security clearances and anti-money laundering audits. Last month, the military finance command flagged a series of recurring, structured cash transfers from my account to yours. They didn't see it as a sister helping family. They saw it as an unauthorized secondary income stream going to an unvetted civilian account."

Martha’s face turned an instant, ghostly shade of pale. Her finger stopped pointing. "What... what does that mean?"

"It means the federal government launched a forensic audit into the account I've been feeding," I said, my micro-expressions tightening into a cold, professional mask. "They didn't just look at my transfers. They looked at Penny's 'independent consulting' business. They found out she hasn't filed taxes in four years, yet she has been depositing thousands of dollars of my military allotment into an undeclared shell account under your name, Martha. The total is eighty-four thousand dollars."
