Part 1: The Dark Descent / Chapter 4 / 4

Part 4: The Moretti Succession

One year later.

The summer sun over Newport was blinding, turning the surface of the Atlantic into a sheet of shattered glass.

I stood on the stone terrace of the Moretti villa, wearing a simple white linen dress, watching a little boy with thick dark curls chase a golden retriever across the manicured lawn.

Luca was nineteen months old today.

He was strong, healthy, and entirely oblivious to the heavy security towers hidden within the pine trees surrounding the estate.

The heavy glass doors of the library slid open, and Giovanni walked out, carrying a small leather folder containing the final quarterly reports for the Moretti logistics network.

He didn't look like a mafia boss today; he looked like a father, his sleeves rolled up, his watch catching the morning light as he knelt down to scoop Luca into his arms.

The little boy laughed, burying his face in Giovanni’s shoulder with a total, unyielding trust.

A black sedan pulled into the gravel driveway below, and Marco stepped out, carrying a single, official document from the state capital.

Giovanni didn't lower Luca. He walked to the edge of the terrace, looking down at his chief of operations.

— Is it signed? Giovanni asked.

— The governor just approved the charter for the Luca Moretti Pediatric Research Center, Marco reported, a rare smile touching his face. The building at Boston General has been completely remodeled. Marla Hensley’s appeal for wrongful termination was officially dismissed by the labor board this morning.

I walked over to Giovanni’s side, resting my hand lightly against his arm.

Fifteen months after our divorce, I had called him from a crowded emergency room because I thought I had no other options left.

I had thought bringing him back into our lives would start a storm that would destroy us.

But looking at the beautiful, unyielding sanctuary he had built around our son, I realized the truth.

The storm hadn't come to destroy us.

It had come to clear our path.

Giovanni looked down at me, his dark eyes softening just enough for me to see the man beneath the iron mask.

— He’s a Moretti, Lauren, Giovanni said quietly, handing Luca over to me as the little boy yawned against my neck. And a Moretti never inherits a broken kingdom.

I smiled, holding my son close as the security gates at the edge of the property clicked shut, sealing us inside our perfect, protected world.

The helicopter on the hospital roof had been a declaration of war.

But the peace we had won from the ashes of that night was entirely our own.
